Allowing freedom of (anonymous) speech means sometimes people will get their feelings hurt. And defamation may occur. But boy, if you ask me, I think having freedom of speech is way more important than the few negatives it allows.
Some might say it's even worth giving their life for so others can have it.
I chuckled at first, then a little concerned, but, nah, I'm glad someone is sticking up for this amendment, because I'm definitely going to need you guys to help me stick up for mine before too long.
So if I was in your guild and I feel uncomfortable around cursing and constant sexual talk that seems to spew from guys, would you state to incoming members that we have someone sensitive to that kind of talk? That way they respect my sensitivities?
By the way, I play WoW too, and I think all the "fag" talk is despicable.
You seem to have made a point to call it out, which may be the problem with this particular banning, and why some people are complaining. Some times people wear their sexuality like a badge to be shouted to everyone they meet ( not just homosexuals, straight people even more so probably, which makes makes me cringe as well ).
Having many intermediate versions lying around is a non-problem. First of all, only deltas have to be saved with a complete version saved once in a while to minimize the chance of corruption. Secondly, just as with backups, the older the version is the less intermediate versions you need. Say one version every minute for the last hour. Then one version every hour for the last day before that. One version every day for the last week before that. And so on.
A filesystem that supports transparent automatic versioning is such a no-brainer from a usability standpoint that I can't figure out why nobody has done it already. I guess it must be really hard.
You pretty much described exactly Apple's Time Machine (by far my favorite OS feature that came with OS X Leopard). Especially funny since you described the incremental back scheme almost right on.
"Time Machine saves the hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for everything older than a month."
Yes it's called a backup, but it's really versioning as well and it's integrated into some applications and the file system.
This was my issue completely when I first read this story.
I grew up with Macs, so my first use of the term Virtual Memory was really swap. That never left me until this article and these comments.
Now I've know for years that programs now all have their own "private memory" and can't see that of others, but some how my definition of virtual memory never changed until today!
Sounded like a reasonable question to me (and maybe this is exactly what the submitter was thinking too). I'm really really glad this article has cleared something up for me.
If the original submitter really thought virtual memory meant swap (as I did), the question is perfectly valid that he posed.
I don't know if younger candidates understand that a pattern of leaving just when you should be starting to add real value is a very bad thing to do to the company that hired you. It may be a 'what can you do for me' mindset.
I don't know if companies understand that letting workers go during a difficult time in their life is a very bad thing to do to a person that has worked for you for years. It may be a 'what can you do for me' mindset.
I'm really glad to see these type of comments bubbling up on slashdot lately. In previous years, it seemed to me that most here were "company men" that would do anything for their company.
Have things changed? Or did I just not read thing correctly before?
If things have changed, what changed the attitude? Are we older now and have seen how little companies can care for their workers?
You missed one small but important point. Just because the game mechanics allows you to do it, doesn't mean it isn't exploiting. And exploiting has always been against the terms of use for World of Warcraft.
You might reread exactly what they did to powerlevel that person. It's pretty obvious that they were doing something not intended by the developers to get some sort of unintended advantage (exploiting).
your arguments are starting to sound as though you wish that there were be a legal mechanism to say, "OK, you've made enough money from this, now shut up and let us have at it."
That can be argued to be one possible method for limiting the terms of copyright. It may be obvious to some that isn't the right way to do it, but to people with an open mind, it sure has some merits for discussion.
This is exactly what I was going to stay. How can a law that could potentially wind up costing me everything I own be "fuzzy". Or in this case, costing someone lots of hard work without being able to publish their hard work (aren't we supposed to be promoting work like this?).
I'd just like to second the Applescript thing and make sure to point out that iTunes is very scriptable. I've written many scripts that manage my song lists and files.
Things such as:
1) make playlist of albums without artwork (also for lyrics)... stuff smart playlists can't do already
2) update song metadata from specific file name formatting, ex: "tv_show_name - season.episode - show_title.avi", from the os file system file name
3) update some metadata that isn't available in the GUI
You aren't restricted much. You can even jump back and forth between the file system from itunes (say you wanted to change the name of the file in the file system given metadata from itunes, or move them into subfolders based on genre).
I actually recorded some video while playing warcraft on my now over 5 year old G4 power mac (latest OS X). I figured, ok, if anything, there's no way this old computer is going to handle recording video AND play warcraft at the same time. It did, without any warcraft performance hit that I could see. I'm not sure who is to be praised for such amazing performance, Blizzard or Apple.
This thing amazes me every day. I can still throw anything at it without issue.
Funny you said that, because I myself have given my wife an open offer for her to get a job while I stay home and do housework/take care of children. I would give anything to do that!
I like those items. But one thing we as parents need to keep in mind is that trust is critical. It is the only thing that will keep your children doing good when they are away from you. It's tricky, but the fence needs to have a hole in it every once in a while, so the kids know you trust them not to go through it.
Have mom stay home to do the house stuff. Yeah, you'll have a bit less money, but tons more free time with your kids when you get home from work. It works : )
I've often thought of this exact idea too. So that's three of us. It seems obvious since gas engines perform poorly in stop and go type traffic. Well, have it run at a constant speed and use the battery to buffer.
Movies on iTunes still have DRM. The other reason would be to purchase iPhone/iPod Touch apps.
How nice would it be to see:
Maryland vs. BadAnalogyGuy
I'd pay to see that trial, assuming he uses BadAnalogyLawyer.
I'd much much rather see that happen than try to use the courts to track down and sue every last false source of information.
Yes, it would be tricky to outlaw lying. And that is kind of what these defamation laws are doing essentially.

I'm extremely pro-gun

I don't get why I cant use the content I have purchased for personal use in any way I want to
Because you are stealing money from people that rightfully deserve it. Now go buy your buggy whip this year, as the law dictates.
So the question is: Which do you like more? The people that write the books or the people that sell you the books?
Neither, I prefer decisions to be made with a tiny bit of common sense. The fact we are even having this debate is hilarious.
I can't believe so many think a computer reading back text I bought should cost more. Just because how it is delivered to me once bought?
I'm feeling shilled in many of these threads.
Liberty or Security. Choose one.
Slight clarification:
Liberty (which is essential) or Security (which is only temporary). Choose one.
Automatic file versioning is the obvious answer.

I'm not sure the ignorance was on your side. Fecal matter in the trash can?

Fuzzy laws just seem like a bad idea.

I've never used my right to protest against the government. That doesn't mean it's not something we should constantly fight to keep.
