This is true. In the UK, schoolkids are no longer allowed to do experiments with crude oil, because it's carcinogenic. We have to use "substitute crude oil". Jesus...
You mean like, if you don't upgrade, your wallpaper changes to goatse permanently and your IE homepage is permanently set to that site which pops up millions of copies of Goatse and Tubgirl? Then, after its spawned a few thousand windows, the computer bluescreens with the simple message, in grey, centred on the screen below an image of a cackling Gates:
AGP and FB support BOTH crash the PC on boot. As in, black screen. If I have either agpart or the framebuffer compiled-or both-then it just gives a black screen. Which means my RIVA TNT2 gives even worse performance than it did before (not enough money for a new card) and I can't even have a bootsplash to dull the pain.
Drives the final nail in the coffin of a progressive EU willing to stand up to big business. Fine, they're gonna rip MS to shreds, but there will only be other fatass monopolies ready to take their place and this law will reinforce the fuckers.
I'm writing my MEP as soon as possible. (Yes, I am in Europe. Yes, I am in Britain. Yes, I do like Europe.)
That's reeeeally funny, because when I was doing it on that train, I had a table. And even on that train without a table, I had my lap, which worked fine. And then there was that time I did it on someone's coffee table...
I don't give a fuck to be honest. The only real use I had for it was to check my email on the move, and even then I used it sparingly. It would have been super mega cool if I had my phone in my pocket and my Palm in my hand, but I was only using it in places where I had a table or hard surface anyway.
I never used Bluetooth and I don't know many people who had/have any use for it. Infrared is cheaper, if not quicker-I remember being able to browse the internet on my Palm using an infrared link to my mobile phone. Pretty cool.
Freenet will blatantly be used for child porn, and probably already is. While I'm sure there are lots of chinese people who will find value in it, there are lots of child pr0nographers rubbing their dirty little fucking hands with glee. "Oh look, something free and uncensored! Better puts some child porn on it! (uploads)."
Yeah, free speech is nice, but at the same time providing free speech to child pornographers and Nazis is both hypocritical and wrong.
Mod me down or what, I don't care: if you're going to remix stuff, get permission first. Simple as that. There is no way in hell that this could fall under fair use.
True. But then, that's what Debian does, and I'm sure that would piss you off no end-all of that pissing around with apt...
The 4CDs is for convenience. If it fucks you off so much, go to CheapBytes or LinuxCentral (LC kick arse) and buy the goddamn discs, or get a friend with broadband to download them. Simple.
And to be honest, I don't really want to switch back.
I had a load of fun and games trying to get Fedora to share my internet connection (coming in through one ethernet card) to the Windows XP computer in the other room used by my family (on the other one). Despite following a nice tutorial I found through Google, I couldn't get it to work.
Knoppix, on the other hand, stormed in and kicked the fuck out of Fedora, and with a few mouse clicks internet connection sharing was set up. A bit of wrangling with apt-get and one command in Konstruct and I had a full KDE 3.2 desktop set up and running. I'm using it now (very slick). It's the power of Debian with the simplicity of XP, and I wouldn't think twice about setting one of these up for a friend. It's just a perfect system.
Fedora seemed bent on making everything I need to do hard as hell and putting things out of the way. Most irritating was GDM, which decided that if I pressed Ctrl-Alt-Backspace I really didn't want to kill X so I could install the NVIDIA drivers, I just wanted X to restart. It shipped with a broken kudzu meaning that hardware detection didn't work properly...gah.
For that will be done by tax paying citizens taking up torches and pitchforks and decending upon Washington
Jesus Christ, instead of doing that over patents, wouldn't it be better to, say, do so about all the Love Canals that are dotting the landscape, or perhaps the massive war Bush started? Maybe about the loose rein corporations have been allowed?
It went something like this.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!
A mushroom cloud rises out of the room, and both Darl and him are vaporised.
The Slashdot crowd are puzzled at how to feel.

Goatse and Tubgirl redirects?

*sigh*
Definition links on Slashdot went to Everything2, not Wikipedia.
Normally there's a little ? next to the word which links to E2.

Yes, but who uses a Palm to browse the web while walking? Honestly...imagine the lamppost related lossage! IMAGINE IT!

How do you knOOOOOWAAGH my fingertips! Stupid keyboard....
Fuck, I remember it from now. Literally, I just got emailed a link to the fucking Hamster Dance. RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND.
I'm scared, so very very scared.
How could we sink so low...
While it's nice to have them on his side, why would the EFF want to be in this case? I thought their brief was *electronic* rights.
What next, the estate of Charles Schultz suing over the Linus bit of Linux?!
Jesus, trademark law's gone to hell in a handbasket.
Hypocritical because giving free speech to people who despise free speech is just that.

Everyone will just use Google.
IBM...oops, fuck.
:)
Novell...oops, fuck.
Red Hat...oops, fuck.
So, when do you expect CmdrTaco to post his C&D letter?
You have it all wrong, it's not that the US had no spine or gumption, it's that the EU haven't yet been bribed :)
You mean like that little "LInux in Business" topic icon? Cool, fortune telling Slashdot editors!
Or at least joke-forseeing.
Or something.

That's what the tutorial said, and it didn't work.
And if you think that normal users would do that to just get their home network going, well, just no, they won't.

Just after I switched to Knoppix.

Just my two pence (for Brits)

There are more important things than patents.
