War in the conventional sense is the incorrect term. New cold war is more like it - and sadly this time we are completely out-gunned. The US has spent so much time dumbing down its educational system, ignoring math and sciences in lieu of budget increases to school sports, and completely ignoring the fact that college loans are the second leading cause of bankruptcy in the US (and you can't escape them through bankruptcy!). An educated populace is the only thing we could use to win a technical cold war. And we ain't got it.

Yep, because the ancient Greeks never practiced homosexual acts. Oh wait, I'm pretty sure they did. A lot. In fact it was just as common as heterosexual acts. The modern connotation of homosexuality is actually rather new. Hence in Rome the saying about Julius Caeser: "He was every woman's man, and every man's woman."

I agree 100% with you. If you don't want to be a parent, don't have children. Your responsibilities don't end at birth - its up to you to shape that little person you created. People need to take some god damn responsibility instead of having their legislature act as their surrogate. Or get snipped. Either way works.

Can't you read? I listed technical books. Amazon states very clearly that books consisting of numerous diagrams, pictures, etc do not convert properly. Ever looked at a networking book? Half of it is console output, a large portion is pictured, with a bit of regular text splashed in between. What's the point of paying for a conversion, or even getting a free conversion if it won't display in any comprehensible manner? I want native PDF support, because that's what most ebooks currently are. NOT mobi. Not Stanza. Not kindle. PDF. The standard.

If you're going to be an anonymous coward, at least be an educated anonymous coward before you start muddying up a genuine question with dribble that 2 seconds of searching and 1 second's worth of deductive logic would rend pointless.

  20. Can it read pdfs yet? on Amazon Announces Kindle 2, With Slew of New Features · · Score: 4, Interesting

If not, still not interested. I don't want to pay amazon to convert something I've already paid for. Postscript is a standard, and they should make it compatible if they want to increase their market share. Period. I have my entire o'reilly and cisco library in PDF on my laptop. The only reason I'd get a kindle is to have them in a more convenient form for study and reference when I'm unable to access my laptop. Oh yeah, so far as I know kindle books can't be read outside of the kindle appliance.

  21. Re:Hell yes! on Psystar Wins a Round Against Apple · · Score: 1
Really? I see this as meaning that support quality for apple software will plummet. They will now have to support a variety of hardware which is not known to be compatible with their OS which will fatten up the OS substantially with additional drivers. Further, it means that technical support will become even more of a nightmare than it already is for both the consumer and the support provider. Why should apple be forced to support hardware they can't know works with their OS? Who is going to pay for the changes they'll have to make? The end user, that's who. So prices go up even more, and Mac's recent market grab starts to slip back away and people go back to windows because desktop linux is still ultimately a joke (at least until they can make it that updating your system via system update doesn't break video drivers and half your software). Everyone loses.

Why are you saying "hell yes" to this? Have you never worked on a help desk and had people call you to try and get you to support hardware your company didn't provide? Do you know how hellish it can be?

Just curious, it states that antivirus applications won't be counted. How do they consider what is and is not an antivirus application? Licensing fees? This means software such as ClamAV will invariably be shut out because it's all done open source and so far as I know wouldn't have the money to purchase a license. What about McAfee stinger? What about the antispyware you need to keep installed to keep windows safe? Do they all have to be licensed? What about less commonly used ones for the American market, such as Eset? Panda? Pc-Cillin? What about firewall applications? If you're stuck using their licensees, that means you're often stuck with inferior software.

As for third world countries - 10$ is still more than many people make in a year in some places. That's why China basically told Microsoft "Shove it, we're pirating your software. Deal with it." Even their started editions are grossly overpriced for the market they're intending to send them to. My big hope is that this allows further market penetration of OLPC and linux netbooks which aren't crippled.
