I cite our toenails as examples.... do we need them? No. Are they disadvantageous to have for our survival? No. Hence we still have them, even though a significant number of our modern population can no longer see then over their fat guts.

It is interesting that the authors are willing to make blanket statements when there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that alternatives can have a positive effect placebo or otherwise. Actually if the effect is placebo does it really matter? In my case I went to a chiropractor because my back was getting increasingly stiff, and the effect on that has been very good. However an unexpected effect has been that my migraines (previously 2 or 3 per week) have reduced to one every few weeks. Connection between back stiffness and migraines? Placebo effect? I suffer from hypocondriasis and any "cure" would have done? I don't really care as my quality of life has improved out of sight, and it was well worth the money spent. And I'd recommend to anyone to give chiropractic be give a try.

I'll probably be labelled a troll, but I don't understand why you would spend money on something that has dubious educational value, and has the potential to be a nightmare to administer. A laptop for everyone sounds very nice but in the cases I have been involved it has been rather less successful. What about : breakages, theft, "left it on the bus", playing games in the classroom, suitable software, training for teachers, administering a suitable network, filtering content, students who know how to and are willing to get around any security methods, students being a target for for muggings ....... boy oh boy I could go on. IMHO a waste of money without very careful thought and a clear pathway as to how and when they will be used.

Well, thankyou for displaying extreme ignorance. Your opinion of teaching as a "job" only, degrades many fine individuals who believe in what they are doing. You also appear to be blaming a poorly functioning system (insert company, organisation, family instead of system) on those working in it. So, it is the fault of the kids in a disfunctional family that they have poorly educated thugs as parents? Wrong! The education system is not created by teachers - usually this is done by people who don't know shit from clay, but wield power and influence in one way or another.

IANAL, but it seems to me that this is the way the law should work. A Judge does not necessarily rule in a particular way because it is right. He/She can do so, so that the case can proceed to the next level for judgment by a court with greater authority/skill/knowledge. Whether the parties take it to the next level is a matter largely for their wallets to decide - in this case, thankfully there were people ready to argue the case for free at that higher court.

Currently it gets about 100 hits per day - 3 or 4 of those are spammers adding junk pages and the same number is me deleting them, so around 90 hits per day on the front page. The metrics I use are : is the number of contributors increasing?, Are any pages being edited and how often? Are people returning? Is the number of pages growing? Whilst the accuracy of information is important, it is not in my opinion critical because the spirit of a wiki is that it can be made more accurate by another contributor.
