shit, sorry. That list was supposed to look like this:
You need a 3 step program:
-Clearly mark all advertisements
-Apologize profusely to your community (the free content generators who make the money for you)
-Promise to never do it again. Make a policy to show you mean it. Perhaps remove all advertisements from the website for a week to show just how sorry you are.
I guess that's what you get for free labor.
I almost never comment. I happily read slashdot daily. I enjoy all the community comments, and even find them useful (seriously). The all-to-common badly written articles get dissected by people who know more about an issue than some reporter. The random tangent discussions and fanboy vs fanboy banter entertain. The comments are what make Slashdot BETTER than some other random tech blog.
Do you hear me slashdot? Your users generate half the content that I come here for. DON"T PISS THEM OFF!
It is deceitful, offensive, and downright stupid for you to post advertisements as articles. At the very least, they should be clearly marked. Maybe moved into their own category. We are not idiots. We do not like people trying to trick us.
The community (your bread and fucking butter) WILL move elsewhere! Get some cheap intern working on a marketing degree to tell you where you went wrong, and fix it! Quickly!
On second thought, don't even bother with the intern, i'll do the work for them. You need a 3 step program:
-Clearly mark all advertisements
-Apologise profusely to your community (the free content generators who make the money for you)
-Promise to never do it again. Make a policy to show you mean it. Perhaps remove all advertisements from the website for a week to show just how sorry you are.
You can keep the $8/hour this information is worth. I'm just THAT generous.
You're welcome.
Damnit... i KNEW i should have requested the vacuum tube version of my new Android phone! With this new information, i think the extra weight would have been worth it!
I did something like this once. My goal was to connect an international number with my cell phone through my landline (which was actually vonage with an international plan). I would initiate the call using a perl script executed through a page on my private web server. The script would use a terminal application to send AT commands to the modem.
Call first number
Wait n seconds
flashhook
call second number
wait n seconds
flashhook
(the 2 numbers are now connected)
This is not exactly what you're looking for, but theoretically you could have a terminal app listen for incoming calls. When a call comes in, it should answer quickly, flashhook, dial your number, flashhook. While i'm sure you could find a way to dail in and give it the forward number, it would probably be easier to have a webface for that.
The only issue here is that the caller might be confused. They would hear the ringing stop and then after a pause hear more ringing before you pick up. There may be a way to have your computer play some kind of "please hold" audio file.
I forget what terminal i used, but there are quite a few advanced terminals with scripting ability.
I have the same issue with facebook. Despite my discouragement, my friends insist on sending me messages on facebook. I'd rather not cancel my account, but at the same time, i'm getting increasingly nervous about all that data out of my reach. I wrote a crawler a few years ago, but facebook has started kicking people off for that behavior.
I just recently wrote them a note asking for help backing up my data. We shall see what they say. I consider the ability to locally mirror all my cloud data to be requirement.
That's the thing though. It is very rare for me to find a product with a rebate that will save me significantly more money than just shopping around for a non-rebate item.
Sure, if you only shop around in retail stores you might not find a non-rebate deal... but who only looks in stores?
I have also always received my rebate... eventually, but I have never taken advantage of a rebate without feeling taken advantage of.
Let me get this strait. You want me to buy something at a marked up price, then spend the time and energy (time is money) to send in proof that i bought your product. Then, months later, after you have earned interest off of my money, i get some of it back, only to have saved a few dollars anyway?
Oh yes... lets not forget about all those poor souls who didnt follow your directions properly, or forgot to send it in on time, or god forbid decided not to bother!
Somehow this whole process disturbs me. It is a backassward coupon scheme, and i refuse to ever buy a product with a rebate (unless the pre-rebate cost is low already). I am almost always able to find the same product for only a few dollars more somewhere else without a rebate, and to me that is worth it.
Anyone care to enlighten me on how rebates benefit me?
I am quite aware of the great things 911 has done for people. i have been lucky enough to only have called it once, and my experience was rather pathetic.
I also used my cellphone(e911 enabled). I was in Philadelphia, PA. A man was passed out on the street and after going through standard procedures(scream-"sir, are you all right?"... shake arm with foot, repeat screaming), i dialed 911...
countless rings and over a minute later, i hung up and dialed the operator, who asked me where the hell i was, and patched me through to the local fire department, who also asked me where i was an got there in a few minutes(less than 5).
i NEVER got 911. I'm not sure if this is the fault of verizon(wouldnt surprise me) or something else, but obviously something was fooked.
I must admit confusion.
I was not aware that i require a licence for tea-bagging. I may be in for some real trouble if this is the case, as my boyfriend just left me and took the house, and I'm really starving for cash here.
God knows I could have used some of the royalty money from all those who have smoked my cock.
I am an American
Frankly, i welcome anti-american attitudes. Right now the only thing that will save us from ourselves is if the rest of the world pounds reality and sanity into us again and again and again.
As some so-called "leader" in the USA said,
"Bring it on."
I keep myself grounded to my car at all times while refuling. I touch the car before i pick up the nossle, i lean against the car and touch it with my hand while pumping, and i dont let go of the car untill the pump is out of the tank.
If i have to get something inside my car, or god forbid sit DOWN in it, i always grab the metal on the outside of the roof while getting in and out.
This may seem excessive and a pain, but i find it really doesnt take much more effort or time, and isnt even very noticable to anyone watching me. I work with small electronics all day, so grounding myself before doing ANYTHING comes naturaly to me.
As for my cell phone, it sits in my pocket. On rare occations i have answered it while pumping. Risky? maybe
We use and sell with out product a bunch of Panasonic Toughbook 18s at work. These have been my only real experience with covertable tablet PCs, but we really like them. Dont you people have anything better to do?

I must say, i am surprised by the amount of bashing going on about this. Some is to be expected, but this is absurd. Yes, the guy has an obsession with star wars, and honestly i could not handle being seen driving around in that thing, but why is this any worse than people spending tons of time modding their case? Or spending oodles of time creating a linux drink mixer, or modding their x-box? These are all hobbies that people enjoy doing and at the very least they should respected for the remarkable piece of artwork they have created and the skill that it required. How much creativity do you guys exhibit on a regular basis anyway? Probably not as much as these people. This kind of stuff is what stimulates the mind to create the amazing technological advances we wouldnt be able to live without as geeks. Oh yes, the site is down but from what i hear his wife isnt half bad looking. I personaly know quite a few damn good looking geek chicks. So maybe you guys are looking in the wrong places.

As long as you dont mind giving out a new number, you can use a service like GrandCentral

"Best Buy is taking a leadership position within the retail industry with our plans to eliminate mail-in rebates".
Really?
Last i heard, staples is already doing this. But hey, if they SAY they're being LEADERS, then who's to argue. PR departments don't lie.
While it is nice that they are making it slightly easier, nothing changes the fact that we are still dealing with rebates here.
A rebate is a rebate. The easiest rebate is no rebate.
I have also always received my rebate... eventually, but I have never taken advantage of a rebate without feeling taken advantage of.
