I just wanted to post, after reading what grumbel said, that I agree with you, bigberk. It is unfortunate that those people forget that "free" has the meaning of "no cost." If your software costs nothing, then by jeehosafat, you have a right to CALL it free. Anyone who disagrees is confusing 'free' and 'Free'. If that makes any sense.
What do you mean by embrace our freedom? By your first post you seemed to insinuate that the US only had freedom of speech to those who pay for it. This is utterly wrong. The internet and other mediums you must pay for. This is because the MEDIUM is not free. This has nothing to do with the speech not being free.
You have a right to free speech. This is NOT free as in beer.
Sorry, I didn't mean NYT v Sullivan, I meant this:
Associated Press v. Walker
The AP appealed, and again the U.S. Supreme Court reversed. In 1967, the court extended the New York Times Co. v. Sullivan guidelines to "public figures." Public figures, like public officials, cannot win a libel judgment, the court ruled, unless the media show reckless disregard for truth. In the chaos of the riot under deadline pressure the court decided the AP was not guilty of "reckless disregard" and should not be penalized.
The Walker decision was sandwiched into another "public figure" case, in which the justices used the same legal standards, with a different result -- Curtis Publishing Co. v. Butts.
Now you would be surprised how difficult intent of malice is to actually prove (since the burden rests on the plaintiff)
Incidentally, here's a little note about celebrities and tabloids: Tabloids & Public People
Now you can understand why the tabloids concentrate on politicians, actors, athletes and rock stars. The libel rules are much more lenient for celebrities. The media dont have to be absolutely sure the story is true, so long as they dont suspect it may be false.
If youre a public official or public figure and you hear a journalist is about to damage your reputation with a false story, run do not walk to the media outlet and warn them. Take a lawyer with you.
Thats what Carol Burnett did when she heard the National Enquirer was about to print a false story about her being drunk in a restaurant and arguing with Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
She put the Enquirer on notice, but they published it anyway. Clear evidence, the jury decided, of malice and reckless disregard for truth.
The jury awarded Burnett $1.6 million.
So basically, if it COULD be true, it's OK to print.
My statement still stands that going into becoming famous, you know what you are getting into. You wave your right to complaint by choosing the field. It's like saying "I entered the army, but it's not fair that I could die!"
Oh cry me a river. Boohoo, they're taking pictures of me in my Ferrari with their big bad cameras. Make them stop, please.
If you get into show business, and you don't realize you are giving up your privacy, then you are a moron.
And yes, I made up "stupidization," and parent: it's 'paparazzi' and 'libel.' And parent is wrong, also -- libel and slander cannot be charged easily against someone who has said things about a 'public figure.' See http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/history/A0835522.htm l for information about The New York Times, Co. v. Sullivan.
For just a little trivia or whatnot, Pflugerville is located right north of Austin, the capital city and location of the main University of Texas branch. A few university students commute from Pflugerville.
Because suprnova served the packrat in all of us. We didn't necessarily go to suprnova looking for Ayumi Hamasaki's Colors, but what the hell? We were there looking for the latest Daily Show already, just one more click to get that Japanese girl's music video!
I find that I can still get all the files I want on BT, without the added crap of "woah pretty me want!" every time something I never thought about downloading showed up on suprnova.
And by Ayumi Hamasaki's Colors, I really meant Fedora Core 2, and by Daily Show I meant Knoppix 3.7.
I think the only thing you could do in your case is to set a certain size swap on c and a large swap on the external drive. AFAIK you don't have an option for "fallback" swap.
My first computer was when i was four, and my father brought home a Tandy from RadioShack. I remember him teaching me within a couple of weeks in BASIC
10 PRINT "something"; 20 GOTO 10
at least I -think- that ';' was there. I don't know why, but I vaguely remember being able to use a ':' or ';' or ',' there or something.
Actually I would say it's more like this: I want to make money in software. Should I code for Windows or Linux? Which has a bigger market share? Windows. Then I shall code for Windows!
People who are going to write OSS don't have that reason for writing for Windows.

· Score: 1
I watched TSS in particular since ZDTV days, and I was very sad to see Patrick and Leo gone. I also missed Megan and Cat.
Unfortunately, I had it happen to me in a worse way than usual, I think.
My University (Texas) did not have TechTV on dorm cable, so I didn't get to see it (throughput caps prevented me from using BT to get the show). When I returned home for summer vacation, I was shocked to see G4TechTV and the suckage that the channel entailed. I had lost one of the only TV shows that I truly enjoyed watching.
I guess it was kind of like going off to a foreign land, only to return home and find your friends have all moved away.
i should have clarified that "tarento" is Japanese pronunciation for "talent" and that is the word used in Japanese, not English (for anyone who was confused)
i tend to read blogs from my friends back in the states (because it's far easier to write a blog entry than email like 100 people what you're doing all the time, while still allowing you to email more private things -- kinda like inheritance: every friend inherits information from the blog and also inherits their own special data from the emails)
i also read blogs of other foreigners in japan, to learn from their experiences
i also write my blog so people thinking about study abroad in Japan have something to read about what life is like here
now for the shameless plug i've avoided in many posts to this thread until now
i wrote my own blog software in PHP and hosted a blog off my XP box (yes, xp) with Abyss Server X1 (no, not apache ^_^) and MySQL for a year and a half before i packed up and moved to japan with only a laptop
didn't take me that long to write, and i learned a lot about separating the structure and appearance (XHTML and CSS) in the process
i'm not putting any of those people down when i say this...just my opinion...
but i really could care less what web sites anyone i don't know has visited unless i know something about them, and without the journalishness of modern blogs, how do i know anything about that person?
sure i can read a CV...big deal you published an article, i really care what sites you visit now
while agreeing with most of your post, i disagree with your statement that girls always ask for the latest tech instead of hats...while no, i'm not aware of them wanting hats per se, i DO know that it sucks to be a boyfriend in this country, cuz your gf will be like "get me a gucci bag for xmas" "get me prada" "get me louis vuitton"
japan is one of the worlds largest importers of those brands, WAY ahead of the US i know and i would wager a guess as to one of the top 3 importers in the world
i have seen news segments in japan that showcase the problem where a guy buys his gf a 600,000 yen (6000 USD) handbag and she's like "no i don't like the color orange" so he has to exchange it for another...of course, he can't get a full refund, so he has to resell it to the same store he purchased it from, and i've seen that 6000USD one sell back for LITERALLY 1/2 price
so basically the guy drops 3000 USD for NOTHING
so yeah, tech is not everything...i see most college girls here wearing some old MD player (mp3 is not as popular), or just playing the music via their awesome cellphone (which is 10 years ahead of the US but costs 1 penny US currency with contract -- i have one of those), while carrying a many-hundred dollar handbag to class -_-;;;
i'm just glad my gf is not Japanese...i wouldn't be able to afford college..but then again many more japanese parents pay for their childrens' college than even parents in the US (which really surprised me) and then they live at home and commute to college (this is convenient as they have no room/board to pay) but inconvenient because they may commute 2 hours both ways (i know someone like this personally) to school

Nope, that doesn't work. I -am- the caretaker of -my- computer.
The truth of the matter is, running as an unlimited user is perfectly safe if you don't run anything w/o knowing what it is.
