Battle.net has been around for forever too (longer than Counter-Strike), and you can still play Diablo I through it. Blizzard is probably the only game developer that has less chance of dying than Valve, so Battle.net isn't going anywhere.

Yes, but that wouldn't make any money. It'd also probably be violating anti-trust legislation, since they would be abusing their operating system monopoly to crush Apple.

  5. No on Heavily Discounted Zune Outpacing iPod Sales · · Score: 2, Insightful

It just shows that Microsoft can afford to lose money to gain market share. They can't keep selling it at a loss and hope to eventually make a profit, since Microsoft's online music store isn't as comprehensive as iTunes.

  6. Re:"INFO" Fuse on Stalling Cars Via OnStar · · Score: 1

So, if you remove this fuse in cars with this feature, will it prevent OnStar from disabling your vehicle, or will it prevent you from operating it?

  7. Costs vs Benefits on Stalling Cars Via OnStar · · Score: 1

While I can see the benefits of the system for law enforcement (stopping car chases, immobilizing stolen vehicles), do they outweigh the costs? What happens if they cut off power to the wrong vehicle, causing an accident elsewhere? Is the system easily reversible, or is it a one-way operation? Who has the authority to immobilize a vehicle? Tech support? Their managers? What happens if (when) their systems get infiltrated, by malicious users, or pranksters? There are far too many potential disasters that could happen, in my opinion, for this system to be worth it for either the consumer or OnStar.

Why even bother including a transmission service if it isn't just limited to be barely useful, but not have it work at all for half of the songs you can legitimately get?

  12. Degrade of Education on Do Kids Still Program? · · Score: 1, Interesting

Having personally experienced the education system of today (sophomore in high school), I'm fairly certain it's because the school system has been seriously degraded from what it was. Gifted students are being dragged down to the level of everyone else, and normal classes are slowed down to accomodate for slower learners due to NCLB. Many schools have eliminated gifted programs completely, in the view that most of the people going through the education system won't amount to anything even if they are educated. This is a heavily biased view, as a smart student surrounded by idiots, but it is more or less true.

Is your company required to use encryption that is FIPS validated? (HIPAA, classified stuff, etc)
If not, you should evaluate the costs of the commercial alternatives versus TrueCrypt. To the best of my knowledge, TrueCrypt has all of the features of commercial programs. They all basically use the same algorithm anyhow.

  14. MS RDP on Alternatives to Citrix Remote Computing? · · Score: 2, Informative

Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol, also known as Terminal Services, is basically a Microsoft licensed version of Citrix ICA. Microsoft basically built RDP on top of ICA. IIRC, Citrix sued Microsoft for the feature, which is why Windows XP Pro is only supposed to allow one user logged on at any time. Anyway, Terminal Services should work for you needs, since it supports all of the noted features.

  15. "Next generation technology" on Another Sony Format Bites the Dust · · Score: 5, Funny
    FTA:

But next week, Sony Computer Entertainment executives will begin making the rounds of the Hollywood studios to discuss plans for making the PSP able to connect to TV sets.

"We're hoping the format's going to be reinvigorated with next-generation capability that may include living-room or normal television playback," he said.

Since when is being able to play video on a television "next-generation"? These people are removing features, realizing that people won't buy without the features, and then adding the features back claiming they're innovative and new.
