IBM is in the business of selling hardware in addition to providing support services. It takes alot of people to manufacture and/or build things. And they need employees that interact with customers on a regular basis to continue providing to businesses on a personal level. Lets not forget that the service industry is where IBM seems to be hedging their bets lately.
Google is in the business of selling ad space, with some other business plans beginning to join in the mix. They don't sell anything concrete, therefore they don't have to spend anything on materials to distribute a concrete product. Moreover, they've built a business model wherein they rarely interact with their customers on a regular basis to the extent that IBM does.
It's two different worlds. Every business model has a different market with different profit margins. Saying that IBM is completely inefficient by comparing them to Google just doesn't make sense.
If you didn't buy your girlfriend a diamond(s) because of the whole "murderous cartel" thing OR you believe their value to be artificial and only due to marketing schemes, well... Let's just say you are begging to have her call you a hypocrite and possibly worse.
If it's becuase of the whole "murderous cartel" then I can only assume you research every TINY product you sell to insure you aren't purchasing/consuming anything that supports violence of any kind, be it sweat shops or harm to animals. And that my friend is VERY hard to avoid these days.
If it's because of the whole artificial value thing, well... You better plan on getting married at the courthouse without any type of ceremony. I got news for you, everything in life is artificially inflated. It's called perceived value and every marketing guru out there can put a spin on value. People sell fake sh*t as a novelty item and it makes profit for somebody.
The original poster of the "Ask Slashdot" article specifically stated that they are a mostly a Microsoft shop. Yet, the only +4-5 moderated posts I see all refer to easy ways of dishing out software via Linux or BSD. Am I missing something? Why give great moderation to someone answering a completely different question?
That being said, I think it's quite obvious that this is one area Linux appears to have an advantage over Microsoft. I know I'm tired of manually updating 50+ copies of the MS Office 2003 suite because it doesn't have an automated way to update itself. Unless, of course, I've missed something?
Point taken. I am well aware of the differences between crack and pure cocaine. However, I think the parent was using those drugs as an extreme example, not an absolute reference. As noted by the "etc" at the end of his very short list.
On another note, I have to keep reitterating this same point throughout this thread:
Just because a substance is no longer used in modern medical treatments doesn't neccesarily mean it has no medicinal value. It simply means the potential for abuse outweighs the benefits of it's medicinal value. It still has value as a medicine, no doubt.
Again, you are missing the point. In it's present form, cocaine can be considered an anesthetic. An outdated, unused anesthetic, but it gets the job done.
Think of drugs such as morphine. While morphine is an extremely addictive substance, they haven't found a less addictive alternative that get's the job done as well. Regardless, it is considered to have medicinal value. The same can be said of drugs like Valium or Xanax. While they keep trying to create safer versions, they continue to prescribe those drugs everyday because they get the job done.
If they ever do come up with a drug to replace morphine that does just as good a job of killing pain, they will most likely discontinue the use of morphine. At which point, it will still be considered to have medicinal value. It's just that the risks will far outweigh the benefits for it to be used in mainstream medicine. It will still have "medicinal value", regardless.
For something to have "medicinal value" it doesn't need to be intended for humans. Find me a vet that hasn't charged somebody hundreds of dollars for a single prescription medicine and I will retract my statement.
No medicinal value? Cocaine was once used as a local anesthetic. What do you think helped spur the creation of synthetic drugs such as novacaine or lidocaine?
Ditto for PCP. It was originally procuded as an anesthetic for humans later used by veterinarians. Now, neither uses them because of their potential for abuse. Ever heard of Ketamine? Another popular anesthetic used by vets. It is in the same family of drugs as PCP.
This is just a shot-in-the-dark, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some wort of waiver that must be signed prior to beginning treatment/testing. I couldn't imagine these meds being gauranteed in any way, either.
Hell, I live near Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and I can tell you they are *constantly* putting ads in the paper for experimental programs related to drug abuse and various other experimental treatments. Something tells me an institution as such has looked into the possible legal troubles they may encounter before doing anything like this.
There is an executable flag for running Firefox without any third party add-ons activated. Simply add -safe-mode to the end of the executable that starts firefox:
Dvorak, eh? Too bad there isn't a Dvorak spellchecker. Yes, you can even be corrected for bad grammar when speaking in code. This IS Slashdot, afterall.
FTA: I hope these guidelines will help you beat that overclocking record by using Dry Ice...
It's seems obvious to me. Now some nerd can take a screenshot of his P4 2.4GHz running at 4.0 GHZ. Then he can claim to be king of the nerds for 15 minutes and then proceed to put his stock heatsink back on and go back to living an ordinary life. 15 minutes, that's why.
While I appreciate your attitude, I seriously doubt anyone will use this type of reasoning to when faced with this type of crime. If it means that a business will lose money then they simply will not worry about the well being of others. Unless, of course, they are legally required to do so.
Most people have a hard enough time saying "Thank You" or holding a door for someone, let alone losing money to encourage "good behavior." Good luck over there in your world, buddy!
Barely smoked at college anymore? Maybe not in your crowd. In my town, kids come from the campuses hoping to buy it from the locals. In droves. I could line people up and sell the shit 24/7 if I wanted.
You have got to be joking, right? Lets start from the top:
- Prisons: Overcrowded as it is. Our local city lock-up in Baltimore doesn't even have the capacity to process possible *murder* suspects within the required 24 hours. Public defenders are getting people out of lockup EVERYDAY -- without charge -- because of this problem.
- Police: The last time a cop caught me with a joint, he told me to throw it out. The cops around here don't have the time to keep arresting kids for smoking pot. They have more serious problems to worry about.
- Judges: Don't know about your town, but in mine it may takes up to 6 months after being arrested before you even see a judge for a formal hearing. I don't think it is because of all the pot smokers.
- Marijuana dealers: I don't even know where to start with this one. I'll leave it alone.
That being said; I don't know if I think marijuana will be legalized in my lifetime, but I wouldn't be surprised if cops started treating it more and more like underaged drinking. Similar to, "OK, start dumpin 'em out, kid."
The question is regarding long-term damage done to the brain. Not short-term. Read your own
reports:
CONCLUSIONS: Heavy marijuana use is associated with residual neuropsychological effects even after a day of supervised abstinence from the drug. However, the question remains open as to whether this impairment is due to a residue of drug in the brain, a withdrawal effect from the drug, or a frank neurotoxic effect of the drug. from marijuana
I'd like to see a comparison done against alcohol, also. I am quite certain that marijuana pales in comparison to the detrimental effects brought on from alcohol abuse.
Bottom line, read all the reports you want, it'll never justify the criminalization currently assoicated with marijuana. Christ, half the OTC medications you can buy at the grocery store would do more harm to your brain than marijuana if used on a regular basis.
Yeah, I checked them out and found something interesting. The normal Google logo has 'TM' just to the upper right declaring it's trademark. Several of the year 2000 images have an 'SM' and I still haven't figured out wtf that means? Any clues? Come on. somebody on Slashdot should be able to give me the scoop.
Lets try a little word substitution. Read your own comment out loud with the following words substituted:
uploading = distributing
downloading = receiving
Albeit, you aren't exactly distributing it in it's entirety, you are *contributing* to the distribution of unauthorized content. Judging from past law, I'd say yes.
No offense, but your comparison means *jack* in most people's eyes. I don't want to sound childish, but your last line is begging for a "Woulda, coulda, shoulda," remark. Kerry wasn't elected, Kerry didn't do the same thing and the fact that he *may* have doesn't matter.
The part that does matter is the whole, "Call us nutty" remark as they thumb their noses at the masses. One arrogant move after another, on an international level, is eating away at what little dignity America has left.
Your definition of the word minority seems to be slanted.
I'd say the fan base for H2G2 is a minority in itself. Let alone, those who actually found it amusing. Perhaps you should change your scope of the world to include more than the Slashdot community.
Ugh... Less must mean more in the I.E. world. It's amazing how marketing can put a spin on Microsofts *horrible* track record when it comes to releasing patches in an expedient manner. The more and more Microsoft waits to release a fix, the more these guys make it look like a good thing.
Acording to their philosophy, Firefox isn't as secure as I.E. because Firefox has fixed more bugs? Give me a fscking break.

Should've said "...every TINY product you buy..."
OK, I feel much better now.
I know this is off topic, but...

Oh no, wouldn't want to chance that one. Seeing how proper your British English be, I can surely understand.

Don't know about anyone else, but a sly wink hasn't gotten me a piece in ages. I usually just get slapped in the face.

The term "Acid Test" was also used to describe the acid parties hosted by good 'ol Ken Kesey back in the 60's.
