  1. yes.. a good idea on New Technologies for Colleges? · · Score: 1

Every time scheduling time came around, it was always a rediculous amount of work to figure out what you needed to take at what time, up to 3 years in advance!

I spent so much time just figuring out my different options... it would be great if the computer just presented every possible schedule configuration for me. As graduation neared, of course the number of configurations for the following quarters and years would dwindle down.

THANK YOU for hitting on my biggest computer peeve... interruptions.

I won't even talk to my parents if they interrupt me, and I sure as hell can't stand when my computer does.

An appropriate dialog to pop up a box in front of me while I am working is one that says "Your computer is on fire. Please put out the fire." Anything less than that just doesn't count.

Firefox, do I care even the smallest, tiniest bit if tab 22 didn't load while I'm looking at tab 6? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! WTF.... NEVER interrupt me, firefox, and fuck you!!

This is not flamebait.. it just kills me. Can ANYONE justify that kind of interruption? Even from a person? It's disgusting. Leave me the hell alone.

  12. living a simple life on Screw-in LED Floodlights · · Score: 4, Interesting

As the grandparent said, this "complex system of rules" is just religion oriented rule utilitarianism in action. The point is to live a simple, happy life in service of God.

A story I once heard on the radio: some Amish people are outside doing their laundry by hand, as a group; laughing, playing, and having a grand old time.

Meanwhile a person living a modern-lifestyle goes miserably jogging by. This person was not enjoying their jog, plus stressed out by a job that is used to buy expensive labor saving machines (washer/dryer) that STILL required time to load and operate.

The Amish doing their laundry by hand were getting exercise and camaraderie, and as a bonus they got their laundry done all at the same time. They were also not involved in an time-consuming job to pay for expensive gadgets.

See how it all works? Over time, the rule utilitarianism builds up to a happy life.

Of all the things modern society has to offer, you might think that wandering a modern store the Amish would be most amused by modern electronic gadgets. This is not the case - the simple pleasures always win out. Check out any Amish people in a modern store and you will certainly find them, especially the children, trying out high sugar snacks and beverages.

Pop - one of the most pleasurable modern amenities :-)

  19. too much paperwork on Students Tracked By RFID · · Score: 1

In fact, persons with any passion or desire to pass on knowledge and skills in a field are quickly driven out because they don't spend enough time doing attendance in the correct manner, because they don't spend enough time preparing children for a standardized test, because they don't document a complete and unique separate lesson plan/learning system FOR EACH CHILD.

Guess what, this is really how it is. There is not even the slightest exaggeration in this statement.

My Dad's job requires him to take attendance 3 times; once on the computer, once in his grade book, and once on sheet of paper (by hand - computer printout not accepted), and they must reach the office within 10 minutes of the start of class or they will call down to find out what the problem is.

He will grade and report on every student, every day. He also turns in detailed, highlighted lesson plans for each day. If anything is not in the correct format, it will be returned to him to complete again. He does paperwork long into every night. He also ends up doing the laundry (coveralls for the auto shop) himself.

He is required to participate in "professional development" classes, 35 clock hours per year, including meaningful classes like "how to make a pamphlet in ms word."

There are two "support specialists" who sit in an office and do... get this... paperwork all day, for every one classroom educator.

The administration is in it's own union, and takes a decidedly "hands off" approach.

Great job, isn't it? He believes that if you want to double the effectiveness of public education, simply cut the paperwork in half.

Can anyone else think of a society obsessed with documentation and paperwork? Oh that's right, the Germans!
