Downside is this: say you turn on winamp, and it's all good. Then you switch to your web browser - sound goes up or down. Then you switch to gaim - sound goes up or down. Or you launch a game or something and BAM - super loud, oops.
So really, it's just a pain. I'd rather have everything consistent. I also just turn off system sounds.
The real problem is that the Democrats are not a Liberal party. Take a look at this political spectrum.
IMHO, the Democratic party should be somewhere near today's Green Party, and the Green Party should be somewhere near my personal philosophy, which is way in the lower left corner.
It's also disturbing that the Republicrats are in the same quandrant as Hitler, but reassuring that the Greens are in the same quadrant as Gandhi and the Dalai Lama.
I'm a first time voter and I asked how to do a write-in on the machines here. The first poll worker asked me if I was voting for Mickey Mouse, told me it messes everything up, and that I didn't want to do it. The next told me she didn't know and would have to get the book out and start reading. Fortunately there happened to be an election official from the county present, who showed me how to do it, and even comforted me by saying that there are a lot of write ins today. He also gave me his number so he could personally replace my voter registration card, which the poll workers had "lost."
Dear poll workers, sorry about "messing everything up," and fuck you.
I am confident that my write in vote will not be counted unless that election official is hanging over their heads.
If you don't live in a swing state, then please, vote your conscience. The electoral college will vote republicrat on your behalf. Meanwhile, your favorite 3rd party might get more money, and ultimately one of the 2 major parties may absorb the most popular ideals. This is how the system works in theory.
If you DO live in a swing state, please, vote for Kerry (if you don't want Bush). Why?
Think of the Republican Party as the Catch-All Party. What happens when a school budget doesn't pass? They use last year's budget again, by default. This is considered safe and fair. Likewise, politcally, many people "default" to conservativism. Anything outside of that is considered new and unstable.
When you vote for a 3rd party in a swing state, you are generally taking a vote that would have otherwise been Democrat and chosing a special interest progressive party instead, as everyone else is defaulting to "let's keep things the same as they've been." A vote for a 3rd party in a swing state is thus a vote for Bush. Vote Kerry if you want !Bush.
Ok? Got it? Swing state, vote Kerry. Non swing state, vote your conscience. It'll all work out in the end.
Mozilla at least had the "preload to ram" option to help launch times.
FF has no such thing, and since I switched my parents to it, they usually launch 15 or so copies, clicking away waiting for the window to appear. I talked to them about this behavior but they just don't care. Ah well.
just saying. That $599 that you listed made my eyes pop... maybe your school has a special deal with apple?
But alas, I'm not willing to part with winamp (text matching through internet radio), google desktop search, native gaim, and whatever the newest toy is...
There are actually ports on the keyboard for a portable music player and cell phone (those things you see sticking up out of the keyboard, one on each side).
Check out the "demo" video on the site - at the end the girl pops both devices into her pockets, like some sort of gun slinger... ooooooh cool (for a 6 year old).
SO let me get this straight - the record companies need to grow up and innovate or die, but we need to keep IT jobs in the U.S. because... well, because that's our livelyhoood!
Where are you from?
I only hear "hocking loogies" around here... (Western NY State)
My current driver has per-application volume support.

Ok, still waiting for an answer on this. I don't know anyone who knows the answer to this:
Is Kerry's concession legally binding? Or could he still be elected on the rare event that the votes in Ohio come out ahead?
Ladies and Gentlemen, I think we just found our new head of the DNC!

Horray for the republic?

And what are "we," anyway? What's doing the experiencing? Is it the soul? Or could it be.. wait, wait, don't tell me! could it be....... the brain?
If his content wasn't superior, /. wouldn't link to his blog.
You need to just accept that this is how things are.
I, for one, accept our new blogging overlord!
p.s. dear mods, there is a difference between troll and funny. learn it.

eMac still $749 education for most of us...

I was a squad leader in marching band, and no one ever paid me $10.
:-(
WTF?
I missed out
How about we send robots to Mars and invest the savings into education in the United States?
There's nothing cold and lifeless about amazing photography from another planet. A good motion picture is also very good at stirring up excitement.
Actually, this would make a good reality tv show, and maybe even gather public support for a mission...
However, in space, I don't know how well being "voted off" would go over...
... considering safari STILL can't import bookmarks.

I guess this article is so bad and so long that no one wants to read it or comment on it.

I don't work for them or anything, I am just a very happy customer!
Considering the world's current 6 billion population, 9 million would require mass extinction. I for one don't believe it.
ps view this demo to see how it is weird.
Am I the only one who doesn't like scrolling through my buddy list?
:-(
Most applications, when maximized, will utilize the entire available area to display information. Gaim will leave 90% whitespace. This is weird.
Does anyone want the buddy list to spill into multiple columns feature, or is it just me? Sean said it probably wouldn't happen.
