They dont sensor their image search results... YET. I know they have their moderate filter on by default and perhaps that is how they should approach books and youtube videos as well but at the end of the day, citizens of the United States and the world should not be censored by Google. It should be left up to the user.
so called "offensive" material is 1 click away from EVERYTHING. As it should be.
"What you seem to be missing is the current consoles ARE pc's"
If your 360 is a PC, show me how to browse the internet on your 360? Ok you can browse the internet on the PS3 but its painful.
They COULD be PCs, but they are not. They're not even close. They're strictly limited in format support and functioanlity. They're designed to deliver you content with microsoft and sony's approval
I agree it would be IDEAL to easily stream to these things without transcoding etc... but Microsoft and Sony do not make it so.
Yes, the 360 and PS3 handle divx... divx3 and 5. They're not up to date with current divx which now plays MKV and subtitles.
Neither console can play MKV files.
MP4 support on PS3 is pretty strict and only supports certain MP4 streams.
PS3 will not play Pal DVDs. Xbox 360 does.
Microsoft will never openly support formats they find competitive.
Consoles COULD be really good at playing media and to some extent they can, as you have pointed out... however they fall short and become a headache when you want to see something not supported.
The real solution is simple do not use consoles for viewing media. Use a PC.
Build yourself nice small PC with some horse power and HDMI out. Network it to a storage server and play every dam media format available easily.
I dont know why we keep trying to stream stuff to game consoles. I'm guilty of it as well, but why turn a console into a PC when we already have PCs capable of far more, with more freedom and less headaches?
Its the fault of the console makers really. They want to let you do somethings, but they really dont want you to do other things:)
Sony could have done far better, even though its fairly good at what it does. It still cant play DVD's with regions outside of yours. It still cant play MKV, it still has poor MP4 support.
Its just not going to happen. Build a small PC and use it for watching media.
I doubt we will see it support Matroska.MKV files. I'm sure they want everyone to use WMV.
I'm not sure if i'm a fan of.MKV but the asian films I watch are mostly in mkv format. Its probably because of subtitles. Will windows 7 start supporting.srt files? I doubt it. I doubt it will support MKV.
I'm sure Tversity... or even better, PS3 Media Server, will still be required unfortunately.
Of course SONY could solve this issue by supporting codecs/containers better but i doubt that it is in their interest.
I think the family is doing the right thing as well. I'm not sure of the police's legal right to give those pictures to the public. If they have no right, they should lose their jobs and suffer whatever else is coming their way as a result of breaking the law. I hope that includes never being allowed to police again anywhere.
The police department has a responsibility to the public. I'm not sure if such photos become public record or not, but i think the family is doing what is right.
I agree with this as well. While i'm not sure if such materials become public record because of police involvement, I would expect such material to be private.
If such materials are not public record, then the California Highway Patrol should be held responsible to the greatest extent under the law. Those involved should lose their job for violating the law.
Again thats if these materials arent considered public record once the police are involved. I'm not sure of that legality.
Either way its tasteless of the police to do this. We all know the police employ their share of society's assholes who neither wear the badge respectfully, or represent humanity's best. They ruin it for the few good cops who do so proudly.
Respectfully, I don't agree. The photos show a truth: a truth about what happens when we speed at 100mph on cocaine and fly off the road. They show a truth about how incredibly fragile we are. That we are mortal.
What you say is true. Its a shame that who ever decided to write that harassing email, never had the decency to take into account "how incredibly fragile we are".
I'm not one for censorship, and if the picture is public... its too late unfortunately for this father. My heart goes out to him and his family.
I dont know if the email was intended to be aimed at him in some sick cruel joke by some heartless teenager, or if it was something general that was circulating and he just happened to be related. Either way... I can imagine how horrible it felt seeing that.
Sometimes i wish people would think about someone else for a second and realize "how incredible fragile we are"
I love the worst of the most offensive types of humor on the planet. Funny is funny... Even as sick as it is, this email is funny... but not when it reaches the father.
Its ok to laugh at the guy slipping on the banana peal. Its funny but if hes seriously hurt, it's not. Thats really what the situation is here. Its a heartless cruel joke that reached the wrong audience. Its as tasteless as tasteless gets and it can be funny amung people who have no real connection to the event. It may sound disgusting and tasteless but its harmless if it's enjoyed by mature people that intend no malice. It happens, and its a shame. I dont want to censor anyone... but i do ask that people think about the audience and who might be in it.
This should have NEVER made it into this gentleman's email. Whoever did this is disgusting and cruel. I hope they never have to live through what this family had to.
Get in the game Time Warner. If you cant provide "Broadband" service, dont disconnect a single user... disconnect them all and go out of business because you fail at being an ISP.
Today's bandwidth usage is more than yesterdays....
I remember when 300 baud modems couldnt deliver enough megs a day.... and now with youtubes, hulus, itunes, torrents, online software distribution, videogames, voip, web browsing, FLASH etc... Broadband requirements are going to increase every damn minute.
If you cant provide it... We'll find other businesses who will.
For fun, i just turned Aero off in Vista, and set the theme to windows classic. The redraw in vista is so BAD compared to XP. I can litterally see every icon redraw in Vista but in XP... its so smooth.
Why is Vista so fundementally flawed? Even with Aero off, its gui performs worse than XP.
I just dont get it and apparently neither does Microsoft.
Vista really is the new Windows ME.... and Windows 7 is Vista:(
I'm probably going to install XP 64 on my quadcore next time Vista takes a shit on the computer.
I actually just uninstalled the public beta release of Windows 7 on my older computer (AMD 3500+ 4GB Ram, ATI x1550).
I'm amazed at how much better XP runs. Its much faster and smoother.
Its faster at file copying, screen redraw, multitasking... EVERYTHING. I'm even running MS desktop search, Nod32, comodo firewall in XP and its still faster than Vista and windows 7.
I will say that I do like the windows 7 taskbar though.
Microsoft is really screwing up these days. As much as everyone complained about XP security wise.... Its a fast os.
I'm now thinking of installing xp64 on my newer quadcore system and dumping Vista.
I think he just didnt realize that it was free. I would agree with him if it were not free. Left 4 Dead needs a lot more content. It was a pretty shallow and under developed game. It was fun online with friends but way too short. It easily needed 10 more story campaigns or a much longer well thought out scenario. Perhaps 4 "movies" all sequential to each other, each film featuring newer "zombies" with different features than the movie before it.
Left 4 Dead really is what Valve did to the game. They left it without much content. If valve was asking for money for this extra content, i would tell them to go fuck off. However Valve is doing the right thing and adding more to the game for free. They have done this for TF2 as well and many other games because they realize it increases the value of the game, rather than forcing you to pay for updates, they hope to sell more units of the game at full price.
Valve has been pretty fair with gamers and I think they're the good guys. Say what you want about Steam, it has gotten much better, and its a pretty nice service now.
So this is why they're raising taxes on everything here in NY? I dont need a fucking luxory yellow cab. I just need it to take me from point a to b.
What we do need though is better health care costs, jobs and education. I dont give a fuck about the trinkets in the fucking taxi. I have a fucking iphone.
If anything, just stop the cabbies from pissing in water bottles.
At this point the Easter bunny is more real than the American dream.
They (those in power) will tell you what to do. You will do it, or pay the price. Aww dont like it? What are you gonna do? Vote for one of the two parties we provide you? You do know that its rigged right? This whole thing is a fucking lie.
It sounds to me like someone's avoiding building new slides, and hiring more bartenders.
The reality is this...
Bandwidth demands do not decrease, they only increase. So why are ISP's limiting bandwidth? To make more money? to cover bandwidth costs?...
Shouldnt bandwidth be getting cheaper, not more limited and expensive?
Everyone demands more bandwidth.
Are we all satisfied with 10Mb, 30Mb?... Frankly i'm hoping some day these speeds are instant! I wonder how much we'll be charged then!?
We are simply not at the end of the internet... we are still riding the developement of it. Bandwidth demand increases will continue and if these so called "Internet service providers" cant provide the bandwidth, then let them die! They do not get it.
They're in a business where bandwidth should be getting cheaper, but they instead are limiting it, charging more for less. All this does is slow down progression.
The real question is... Are these ISP's losing money with unlimited plans? Or are they just not making as much profit as they could, if they forced us to pay higher prices?
I dont see ISP's dropping like flys, so i'm going to assume that they're making plenty of money as is.
Fix your networks, provide Fiber to every house like Verizon... or GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE INDUSTRY.
I've been saying it forever now. As good as Linux is, its the applications that matter. Apple is where you look before Linux because of the mainstream desktop support, itunes, ipods, iphones, etc.
Exactly. NOTHING is inappropriate!
Google needs to stop censoring books and youtube.
Yes i would deny them if they were infected with all kinds of things we cant stop from spreading.
I would welcome those from other countries but how many can we take and shouldnt we be screening them to find out a little about them first?
There is a legal process to immigration for a reason. Its not to keep people out, its to keep certain people out.
When they're running across borders in the desert, they're breaking the law and disrespecting the country they want to be apart of.
Too many of them are criminal minded as well. Its no wonder they illegally enter the country.
Sony is slow at doing EVERYTHING.
Windows 7 supporting divx/xvid is no big deal. Its a little too late thing and thats the point.
Still no MKV support.
Will windows 7 support the latest divx spec or will it be behind just like the 360 and PS3's divx support?
The latest divx atleast supports mkv containers and subs.
"What you seem to be missing is the current consoles ARE pc's"

Good point sir.
Immigration laws exist for a reason folks!
Perhaps its a good time to point out that the greatest threat to all of us is not ourselves but our health.
It affects all of us more than terrorism ever will. Here's to hoping we have universal health care soon.
If we can have an army that kills, we sure can have an army that heals.
Well said.

Time Warner knows that if they start advertising "Limited" service... they will lose subscriptions very fast.

Linux needs a single distro.
