For almost all of the United States, the local cable company (of which there is only one) is the only provider of real high-speed internet access. The only other option is DSL (through the local telco).
Of course it didn't help; it's a complete non sequitur (again). Your original comment implied that Western medicine is less effective than placebos, and that "new-age therapies" should therefore be practiced instead. I pointed out that there is absolutely nothing to support what you said. You countered with "refineries" "oil tankers" and "expensive *stuff*", none of which relate to the original question, which was curing disease, not eco-politics.
No. If the planet didn't support life, you wouldn't be here to wonder about it. Don't get mixed up - the planet comes first, the people second. Humans didn't simply "appear" here and luck out that the planet supports life, rather the planet supports life, so humans came to exist on it.
"If the placebo effect relies on the conviction of the patient that their treatment is going to help them, then aren't medical systems with a simpler-to-understand and more immersive theoretical foundation, such as various traditional and new-age therapies, going to be more effective (ceteris paribus) than scientific, Western medicine?"
Western medicine cures many diseases and can remedy or improve many medical conditions. Mental states can influence health and well-being. Your conclusion is that mental states are therefore more effective than Western medicine. Please explain.
This is the first time Filterset.G has gone down - I don't use any html or graphics, so it's pretty impressive to see it knocked out. The index is just the default file listing for a directory, and the content is all in text files.
"honestly I think Adblock slows page rendering down anyway"
If you set Adblock to "Remove ads" rather than "Hide ads", you should notice a significant speed increase on pages that contain ads. Pages that do not contain ads will load slightly slower, but not noticeably so. If you create a very long list of rules or block entire URLs (neither of which should be done), you will notice a larger speed loss.
The object is located in a folder names "ads", and is therefore blocked by just about any ad-filtering solution. It is not a false positive, however, as it is an ad (it just happens to be an ad that you want to see).
"Also factor in that human speech typically assumes a pause of about 500ms a change of speaker"
I'm very interested in knowing where you got that number from. There is no pause during speaker change in a conversation -- in fact, it's normal for one person to start speaking before the other has stopped, and outright interruptions are frequent.
Strayer, D. L., & Johnston, W. A. (2001). Driven to distraction: Dual-task studies of simulated driving and conversing on a cellular telophone. Psychological Science, 12(6), 462-466.
Strayer, D. L., Drews, F. A., & Johnston, W. A. (2003). Cell phone-induced failures of visual attention during simulated driving. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, 9(1), 23-32.
These papers are generally accepted as showing that talking on a cell phone (hands-free or not) decreases driving ability, and that conversing with an occupant does not have nearly the same impact. I should note that I believe that there are major flaws in both studies.
"Why do people always drag out the "Hitler" trump card?"
It's known as "the sledgehammer principle" - when you want to prove something, it is most effective to use the most extreme example.
"Is anyone really fit to judge anyone elses dreams?"
Yes. Many people pursue their dreams of murder, and we put them in jail for doing so.
"At least he's doing his best to get what he wants. Have you ever done that?"
That's such a ridiculous thing to say that I don't know where to begin. I've got a job a place to live, so apparently I've done "something" to "get what I wanted" at some point, since those are things I wanted, and I had to work to get them. I don't believe that there's anyone in history of the world who could honestly answer "no" to that question, and that includes infants that aren't capable of understanding the question, much less responding to it.
"Pursuing a dream" is only worthy of respect when the dream itself is noble and worthy of pursuit. Hitler "pursued his dream" of genocide and some people "pursue their dreams" of cramming a dozen twinkies in their mouth or drinking 15 beers without passing out. Those aren't things that deserve anyone's respect or admiration.
Why do you think that having people believe that Firefox is Internet Explorer is a good thing? All you end up with are people who think that IE is better than it is, and perhaps a bit upset that their home version isn't as good.
Adblock lets you choose whether to hide or remove ads. If you hide ads, they are downloaded but not displayed, whereas if you remove them, they are not downloaded at all (which would save you money).

Hah, nice job contradicting yourself. I am aware that my experiences don't add up to data, but you should have noted that yours don't either. I was/am being objective, while you are being subjective, so my experience is still far more valuable in making generalizations. There is no data to go on, so objective insight is all we have. You can't refute my point by insulting Stern listeners.
But don't try and tell me that his humor is anywhere on the same planet as sophistication.
I'm sorry, but what does sophistication have to do with humor? Are you saying that all professionals are sophisticated (they're not) or that sophisticated people only find "sophisticated" humor funny (they don't) or that Howard Stern doesn't make any "sophisticated" jokes (he does)? What exactly are you trying to prove? Ben Franklin was known for making dirty jokes by dignitaries and politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. Does that bother you?
Thanks - just remember to take it down as soon as Geocities restores access.

"Average User will just think the ISP is incompetent and find another, way before ever admitting their system has a problem."
I don't think that's really an issue - most people don't have any choices when it comes to broadband.

Be careful how you use a general term like "people". Most humans are lactose intolerant.
"Never rely on a single ad-blocking technique."
Why? Adblock is quite capable of taking care of everything.
I don't mind, just remember to take the mirror down once the site comes back up. Oh, and for some reason, you pasted the filters twice there.
This is the first time Filterset.G has gone down - I don't use any html or graphics, so it's pretty impressive to see it knocked out. The index is just the default file listing for a directory, and the content is all in text files.

This may be the first time we can all agree that someone would be far less geeky if they were in their parents' basement, and not outside.
"they aren't required to provide you with bathrooms either"
Restaurants with sit-down dining are legally required to have restrooms in most of the US, I believe.

Adblock noramlly makes it through the updgrade, filters intact. Regardless, you should have them backed up.
