I think things it would be much better if dell offer home users a choice between Windows and Mandrake and the customer got a $75 discount if they used Mandrake. Then Linux would start penetrating the market quickly.

The reason is after WW2 we emerged as the only free trade Country that was not destroyed from war. So our Industries grew rapidly. Our power base goes back to WW2, make no mistake.
Europe and Japan both protect their workers with protectionist policies and tariffs. It works well for them. It is a smart economic policy for the whole of the country. Now if you want to protect a few rich Republican CEOs then it is bad policy. But for the average American it will help. A good economy uses some free trade and some protectionism. Anything else is folly for a country as large as the US.
I think its quite a strech to imply that all tech jobs will go offshore. There are still millions of manufacturing jobs in the US even though there is cheaper labor abroad. Many companies still have some patriotism and stay in the US.
The American auto industry is protected by tariffs that other US industries do no enjoy. You see that is why some cars from Japan have plants in the US so that they can avoid some tariffs. The US should either protect all industries like this or none.

In fact they could make just the client run on Linux and then they could have their servers using Solaris or BSD and not share the changes. Since you won't really be able to do anything with just the client half of the code they will be fine for protecting the games.

Where did you get this info. I've seen there finicial reports and Java business does not even make up 50% of their earnings or revenue. You just said this because you don't like their servers and OS so you assume no one else does.

The days of 6 month tech schools are over. No more MCSE and get an entry level computer job. But with the baby boom generation about to retire in the next 10 years. IT folks with BS or MS degrees will be able to find jobs. No company is going to outsource 100% of its IT department. I think IT will level out.

You can buy Dell computers with Red Hat Linux on them. Take a look at their server selection.
