Uh, what do you mean no one's interested on OkCupid? It's the one site where I do get connected. The other sites don't work, but I meet a decent amount of people on okcupid. Just sayin' !

On the other hand, everytime I post on slashdot, my posts get marked down as bad karma. People here seem to have a hate on for exploring diverse ideas. I never get ANY love from slashdot geeks and they're soooooooo rude, insensitive and inconsiderate.
That's why I'm mostly on okcupid these days. I get to meet all these nice smart and sensitive people, like the girl who's into Cognitive Neuroscience I met last month, another one who's a hairstylist 6 months ago, and one who's going to college also 6 months ago, and the one-time hookup deal with another person two weeks ago, and now we're developing a friendship, etc.

On slashdot, I just come here for the news (mostly interested in Quantum Mechancis), and then I just bolt. Something about too much Machismo, it's just not sexy.
Well, this is all the time I'm willing to spend on slashdot. I'm going to go check my okcupid account.

I tried learning to touch type several times, but it just didn't work for me. Not everything works for everyone, and making something mandatory just because you think it increases efficiency is rather draconian. Math, certainly. Science... eeeeeeeeeeeh, alright. But touch typing? Seriously, go find another hobby other than making up rules.

Years later I started learning to play an electronic keyboard, and that combined with me typing at a computer started to hurt my wrists and fingers. So I did a little online research and switched to a Dvorak keyboard. Within a week the pain disappeared. I was able to play my music keyboard and type on my computer keyboard without a problem.
    What's more?
I learnt to touch type! But without trying to learn it. It just came naturally with a Dvorak keyboard!
So why not make it mandatory to have a Dvorak keyboard available to all students?

When you start making up rules that affect large social systems, it is imperative that they actually reflect the needs and wants of that social system. It should always be a prime concern to alienate the least amount of people, if any at all.

If you are going to write a summary, write it non-biased. I really don't care what you find distrubing. If the guy gets 10 years, that is certainly excessive. But he wasn't doing this for himself, he was selling it to others for a profit. He should know better. And try to be a little honest. If you really believe that this would be used for anything other than piracy for the vast majority of cases, you have been drinking the Slashdot kool-aid too long.

Uh, the summary says he was doing it for profit. I don't know how much more clear he could have been. Maybe you should've bothered to read the summary?

There's no reason to assume it was done for piracy. Time and again we're seeing people wanting to use their gadgets without pathetic restrictions. Look at the whole online music trading conflict. On the one hand file traders are called pirates and thieves who are stealing from artists and they are relentlessly pursued by the music industry mafia. On the other hand, the music industry is cashing in on profits big time and itself is stealing from artists. This is a power struggle.

It's true he is probably biased and so am I, but then again so are you. In addition, your IQ seems to be kind of low.

  23. Re:CentOS, FOSS, and leadership problems. on CentOS Administrator Reappears · · Score: 0

Yes, corporations have these problems also. When they don't deal with them, they go under. There is a reason why corporations sink so much time and money in to insuring they don't happen.

These problems however are not so much similar to the problems you find in companies, but problems you find in none-profit organizations of any stripe. Places where ego is basis for much of the personal incentive for getting involved. Spend some time on your average neighborhood NGO board of directors, and you will see the very similar things happen to their projects.

    Bullshit
    Bullshit
    Bullshit

Ego and Power related problems are much more pronounced in For-Profit structures. You talk about corporations throwing money and time in insuring that it doesn't happen, but what is that if not ego and power flexed another way? It just proves the point even more.

Nonetheless, it's debatable that the CentOS dude went AWOL due an ego problem.

The articles are biased. This is a more complex conflict. It looks like the dude just had it with some sort of (possibly passive aggressive) infighting and decided to say 'the hell with them' for a couple of weeks. I can understand that as it's something I've done in the past. Unpaid work is often very unappreciated, and it isn't unreasonable to simply trash all emails and phone calls until you can catch your breath and unwind the high anxiety tension. Seems to me like some other CentOS folks jumped the gun and turned it into a needless crisis. After all, it isn't like he defaced the site or blocked access. They were able to do all updates including the one denouncing his going AWOL !!

I had a vague suspicion when I read the first denouncement that some other folks at CentOS had power issues, and looking at how he's just come back to simply hand over access rather gracefully without demands or excuses just confirms my doubts. There's always more than one side to a story like this and I wouldn't be surprised if this 'new management' ended up trashing CentOS.

Remember, when power issues arise, the first ones to leave are the wisest.
