Evidently we've all forgotten about http://folding.stanford.edu/ - scores, stats, levels, competition.... ? Let's kick some cancer ass, please. Too many family members fighting it at this very moment.
To make more money, we're going to sell of the division that currently brings in the most profit? Microsoft is far from being in the kind of bind where they need to start selling of parts of the company.
Microsoft's "weak" Windows 8 sales were predicted. Maybe not quite as weak as they have been, but Microsoft didn't "bet big" on Windows 8. They knew the wildly revamped interface would be a huge gamble, and they expected negative reaction. But they are safe, because the large sales of Windows 7 in the enterprise world cushioned the harder than anticipated blow of Windows 8. But with so many businesses so heavily invested in Windows 7, Windows 8 was the PERFECT time to release an OS that had more "market research" potential than "sales" potential.
Sounds like someone should be using Last.FM. It "Scrobbles" listens by all users, compares them to similar acts, notifies users that the band they're listening to has upcoming shows in their area... hmm... still wondering why Pandora is such a big deal, when Last.FM has done all of this and more for about a decade!
4 million Windows 8 "upgrades" in just the first weekend - doesn't count any of the OEM or retail sales, just the online upgrade portal.
I don't think Windows 8 is the big flop anti-Microsoft folks are hoping it will be. It's different. But so was Windows 95 when the Start Menu was introduced. My Surface RT and I will be here if you need us.
How is this making headlines at Slashdot? "Stuff that matters" this isn't.
You paid for the OS. If you bought a Surface, you paid for hardware. You didn't pay for constant upkeep of the applications within. By my count, the "Music" app alone has been updated 4 times since the RTM. That's a lot of man hours - and is clearly more work than just a few bug fixes here and there. This is a huge music service - if you just want to listen to your songs, go use Windows Media Player - the Music app is a different experience.
Just INSTALLING Java or Flash gives me an ad for Google Toolbar. Opening Steam gives me ads for dozens of Steam games. Playing practically any EA game gives me ads for anything from a body spray to a presidential candidate. Ads are ubiquitous. But they don't intimidate me. Practically every sci-fi vision of the future shows corporate sponsorship owning the world - we all know it's going that way... is it news worthy?
I'm sorry, I didn't realize that Apple had sold 4.5 BILLION iPads and iPhones. This article doesn't deserve clicks it's written so poorly. I'm not an Apple fanboy, (quite the opposit, as evidenced by my Windows 8 RTM laptop and my Windows Phone 7 HTC Arrive) - but this is clearly biased writing. I agree with the person who says "Senationalism!" http://apple.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3129133&cid=41388475
Unless they lower the price drastically from Windows 7 Professional, I'm starting to see a class action law suit forming. Removing features and charging the same or more isn't going to make a lot of people happy. Especially features people are considering 'basic' at this point, like DVD support (we forgave XP for not having it out of the box because DVD was still a relatively new and emerging thing 2001... but in 2012? c'mon...).
Dear James Logan, Do you believe litigation is the best way to win over the court of public opinion? Sincerely, -The Internet

I'm somewhat okay with his, just because... if you get caught six times... I mean... c'mon...
