Did you notice their argument for using Ximian ? The fact that it is different enough from Windows means that users are not irritated by the differences, whereas with KDE the users found the difference a problem. Interesting. All the time many WMs have been trying to produce a Windowsish experience and that now looks to be a problem in adopting that WM for newbies.
Whenever I found myself in the position the poster describes I realised that it was actually due to stress, but just not realising it. The thing is when you are really stressed you suddenly discover that you don't have time for lots of things. But if you learn to relax then suddenly you discover that the "no time" excuse is total crap. I tried mild sedatives to break the impasse (sort of worked) but finally discovered yoga / exercise. The yoga was the clincher, you only need 15 minutes in the morning and 15 at night and suddenly you discover all these extra hours in the day. You see all that stress strains your muscles and the strained muscles make you tired so you are both stressed and tired and get more stressed because you are too tired to work effectively. You know you are in that situation when you say "I haven't got the time to do 15 minutes relaxation"... yeah right. Anyway, this really works, this reduces the mental stress and the physical tension and gives you heaps of more energy and ability to do more work... which of course makes you feel better anyway. When I first worked this out I went overboard survived on 4 hours sleep a night... it worked... ummm then kids came along. Right with kids forget all the above... you're stuffed!
But wasn't Blake's "worst enemy" in fact Avon's wife ? I distinctly remember an episode when Avon and whats-her-name came face to face and discussed this. Gives a whole new meaning to "fucking each other over".
Gees I didn't think Nazis like you really existed.
You really fell for the children overboard/Reichstaag ploy didn't you ? "Don't owe them anything" ? I suppose it doesn't matter if we torture the children (because that's what the acknowledged mental treatment amounts to).
And what "real" refugees might you mean ? If they aren't fleeing for their lives then how can they be real refugees. Or perhaps "real" refugees have a different religion and skin colour.
The Liberal Party (note for non-Aussies its a name not a description), have been moving to the right for the last 30 years. In fact the Labour Party is now where the Libs were 20 years ago before the "Wets" were forced out by the "Drys"... the Wets were the true liberals. Now the Liberal Party is bound by ideology, something that even the Labour Party gave up when it became totally capitalistic under Hawke / Keating.
Over the last few years we've seen refugee children imprisoned, refugees held in prison indefinitely, privatisation when even their own constituency has doubts, abandonment of the UN, a dangerous slide towards expeditionary forces (Timor, Iraq, Solomons). I mean I cannot see the Republican Party imprisoning children for example... maybe I'm wrong on that.
The Liberal Party in Australia has morphed over the decades into something like your Republican Party only more right wing.
The Labour Party is usually considered by the Libs as a bunch a commies... and yet they also have right wing tendencies (sometimes very).
The Democrats are made of left wing refugees from the Liberal Party and right wing refugees from the Labour Party. Sort of. Though I cried when they got rid of their leader Natasha Stott-Despoja... a hot chick.
It wasn't only the bad physics, it was also crappy acting and crappy sets (a la Von Daniken influence) and they they boasted that they had developed a cookbook method way of generating the space battles so they could dish it up endlessly. And that's what it looked like. Puke. All the space battles were the same. It got boring after episode 1.
Can you imagine what a virus writer could do once this technology got into the wild ? Imagine a virus that could would wipe out all those PCs, or maybe a select set of IPs... scary... hmmm... wonder what the IP addresses of the RIAA are ?
OK came to this topic a bit late so dont know if anyone will see this, but...
This bit of "news" has been well known for years. Though I think the figure mentioned previously was a population of "less than 10 thousand". I guess the figure of 2,000 is a refinement.
I am amazed however that they don't mention the most likely culprit for this catastrophe. There was a volcano, sorry I don't remember the name, that exploded 70,000 years ago... biggest eruption in the last 100,000 years I believe... surely more than just a coincidence.
Part of this control manefests itself by giving the One a strong connection to humanity. In Neo's case, it was more specific - to one person, Trinity. Because of Neo's strong connection to her, he wasn't going to say 'fuck you' to the Architect and blow the whole place up. Blowing the whole place up would lead to the death of everyone in the matrix, and coupled with the destruction of Zion would lead to the extinction of the human race.
No, not quite. What Neo was supposed to do, like his predecessors, was to save the human race by returning to the source but thereby dooming Zion (yet again). But Neo was in love with a single human being and this made him choose the unexpected path of rejecting the Architect and dooming all humans... however, it is likely that this is exactly what the Matrix was hoping would one day happen... he said they were prepared to survive at a lower level without their 'power source'.
Actually, of course the big thing in the movie is the second last scene which confirms my suspicion that the "Real World" is actually another Matrix or another layer of the Matrix. All just more Samsara I guess.
Its worth remembering that the reason that the Nazi party called itself National Socialist was because back then the word "Socialist" actually had a very positive meaning. But in practice they were just a right wing bunch of goons who made friends with the rich capitalists... and then nicely scratched each other's backs. Capitalism did very well out of the Nazi party. Even before the Nazis came to power they went about executing union officials and communist party members... not very socialist I think.
As for whether the USA is over... I don't think it is, the US has many noble institutions which will take a while to erode. But, they are eroding and it is only a matter of time if people don't wake up and remember their rights.
Anyway, just a foreigners take. I'd just say don't trust anyone in power, its what motivated your founding fathers so I don't see why it shouldnt motivate you.
The brain does not see the "real" world in real time. In fact it is well known that there is a half second delay between perception of an event and realisation by the mind. Interestingly the brain fudges our perception of time etc so we don't notice. What else could it be "designed" to ignore? Seems the EASIEST of all solutions.
Look. Nuclear energy sounds fine in many ways, and we can always do some handwaving about storage of the waste products (synroc etc), but really finally you have to decommission the plants. How expensive is that ? When I realised just how expensive it was I changed my opinion... nuclear energy isn't feasible. If a coal fired plant has a critical accident then you just inject some money to clear the rubble and build a new one. But if you have a Chernobyl, then the costs are absolutely monstrous. And the cost to decommission a typical nuke plant are still massive.
As for the toxicity of plutonium, well I'd like to first see a reference, and to know over what period... caffeine is out of your system (after doing a little genetic damage) pretty quickly but plutonium lasts and lasts. Heavy metals are just not the same as caffeine. This is a misleading comparison.
If you have a close look at the "The Matrix" not only is time in the matrix marked by a green tint everywhere, but the story is told via cliches both verbal and visual. As if within the Matrix the cliche is the medium of communication (and representation) even for those who are free, but outside the Matrix cliche is dispensed with and the conversation is normal.
I found Reloaded even deeper than the Matrix, but I've only seen it once. I was surprised by the amount of overt philosophical monologue in the movie... when the Merovingian gives his little speech to Neo et al about Free Will, I wondered how long it would take the audience to go glassy eyed.
Hacking involves the intentional but usually casual compromise of computer systems. Recently it also includes general technical activity.
As I recall 15 years ago 'hacker' meant a very clever programmer. There were no really negative connotations. Later after the media frenzy its meaning started to change. And then much later the term 'cracker' was coined.
I don't remember saying that Elrond was himself an Ainur, but that he has Ainur ancestry, and therefore so does his daughter, Arwen, is true.
Which also is why Arwen can decide to be mortal, as her father decided to be an Elf, because she is descended from Beren and Luthien... who between them broke so many rules. Other elves do not have this choice.
Very funny. However, since MS themselves stated that the purpose of Embrace / Extend was the third 'E', Extinguish, then the Improve is just your Ignorance.
I have been playing Neverwinter Nights for the last week. And even in Linux I still try to move the cursor to the window edge to rotate my view to see any other docs or interesting events. It is a pretty natural interface. It would be interesting to see a similar window manager that allowed a 360 panorama with stairs going down or up.. and locked doors heh heh... hmmm yeah... really warming to the idea. No don't include the quake like one , I don't want to have to go into combat with files in order to delete them. Though some of the NWN spells are so spectacular it would be fun just every now and then to nuke some file. Of course the normal apps could just sit there on the screen as always but you could rotate around them... like a continuous switcher without the jumps that occurred in Enlightenment.
Hmm. I would only add that having run Spreadsheet courses at the time, in between PC support / programming / etc, the reaction of people was "I want one of these (PC) cos these spreadsheet things are so useful", but what they really meant was "I want one of these PC things because they are so much fun, and spreadsheets gives me an excuse to put to my wife." Rationalisation, that fueled an industry... but hey, I was guilty of it myself.
'awesome' ? Um don't think so. You know, when it was released and everyone was talking about it I got really enthused and went to various bookstores looking for it here (in au). Nope. No luck. Never heard of him. No sign of him on the bookshelves at all in the SF section. Finally, found a copy at a discount table in a supermarket at 1/3 normal price. Read it and... it was ok, well written... but as SF ? Eh. Not impressed, well not as SF novel of the year thats for sure! In fact it reminded me of R.L. Lafferty and a book of his called 'Fourth Mansions' from about 30 years ago.. very similar but Mansions was funny instead.
Right now I have started on the 'Culture' novels of Iain Banks, "Consider Phlebas"... and that is good heady SF... yep awesome. But American Gods was disappointing.
Actually, I think the toast was related to Number Theory in particular. Which ironically is now very applicable e.g. in crypto-systems. But pure mathematicians do it for its beauty and its impracticality... not an unusual thing, especially for slashdotters I would think.
Agree completely. I have often wanted to point this out to politicians when they are considering passing similar laws. I would just love to ask them in their street interviews "Would you trust the opposition with these powers ?" , and of course if they say "no" then... well "then how can we trust you with them ?"

It is clearly the only answer written in binary.

But it has to be that way 'cause that's how we now measure the lifetime of SCO.

Very funny. However, since MS themselves stated that the purpose of Embrace / Extend was the third 'E', Extinguish, then the Improve is just your Ignorance.
