  1. Googles Lawyer supposed to be good??? on Google Loses Autocomplete Defamation Case · · Score: 1

FTA: "Google lost its bid to claim the protection of the E-Commerce Directive's safe harbour provisions, which partly shields hosting and ISPs from liability for content held on or transmitted over their systems."

Obviously the suggestions shown were generated by Google and transmitted over it's network, as opposed to indexed content not owned by Google. So know wonder Google lost, maybe the lawyer(s) should have argued that the content produced by the auto complete feature is solely based on data supplied by it's users and the internet, maybe the same way a newspaper generates headlines based on what sells!.

  2. They need a simple guide or something to click! on Herding Firesheep In NYC — Do Users Care? · · Score: 1

The funny thing is I bet if he'd put "You're at the [XYZ Street] Starbucks on an insecure connection, and absolutely anyone here can access your account with the right (free) tool." followed by a nice image implying "Click here to install a tool to protect yourself", a very good percentage of them would have clicked it!.

  3. Contributing just takes too long on Desktop Linux Is Dead · · Score: 1

I was just about to rant about how "if I wanted to contribute to say... OpenOffice, because I saw something I could improve upon during my daily usage, I'd have to follow the mass of instructions in the OpenOffice building guide to do so. I can't just point my development environment at OpenOffice.org, open the project and start debugging. which for an OS that encourages contribution to the development of it's applications... seems to fail on the ease of contribution.", then add about contributing to a desktop environment say Gnome, and just getting the info took to long.

  4. Sends shivers down my spine on Microsoft's Bold Patent Move · · Score: 1

Yet another concept developers/software innovators have to avoid or ask Microsofts permission!. I can see that the concept is a good one and how useful it will be, but for it to be patentable or least patentable for profit is absurd. Is it so different from de/emphasizing Peoples Names, Date's of Birth(Covered by patent?), Countries and such like or even IP Addresses(Covered by patent)!. All of those are viable concepts to be implemented by a computer process, a computing system, or as an article of manufacture such as a computer program product or computer readable media!.

    What kind of memory ;)

  7. Spam??? Automation? on Should the UN Replace ICANN? · · Score: 1

I agree there's an international problem with spam, but what has that got todo with the management of network names and numbers (apart from the obvious!)? Surely it'd come down to extending the mail transport protocols. As for the management of network names and numbers... you'd of thought that no body would be necessary, in this day and age you'd of thought it'd be completely automated! less the disputes... I mean what do they do?. Now for handing out numbers I can see the requirement for a body of soem sort.

Currently FreeBSD kicks penguin arse!... lets keep it that way whatever the new logo ;o)

  9. Log Retention Policy on EFF's Logfinder · · Score: 2, Insightful

I can see how useful logfinder could be/is. And how it along with relevant administration, can eleviate the possibility that your systems are harbouring evidence of criminal activity... Could they seize any systems they deem necessary? I certainly wouldn't want any of my systems seized because I don't have a log retention policy, and hence when they ask do you have logs for such and such @ such and such a date, a reply of I'm not sure wouldn't go down too well! In short and IMHO having a log retention policy is a good idea... think I might recommend one myself.

The Neonode N1 with it's associated M$oft OS is certainly feeling like vapourware. Another annoucement deems it unlikely to arrive by christmas either!... contrary to previous announcements.
