Put down the kool-aid. The registry is a total crapfest. I would not mind a central directory with independent plain text readable config files with independent names (similar to /usr/lib) for each system (as an option).
However, one of the strengths of UNIX/Linux is that you don't have to have the user rights to install in the central areas. You can install into your home directory and not hurt other people when you make stupid mistakes (and users will make them, as will admins).

By the way, why would you need a different parser for each config file? It is usually plain text in different formats. Sometimes they are simple, sometimes they add.....XML, etc. It is not rocket science.

But....Will the word "Windows" end up like Java, misunderstood and misused from the original meaning ala "Java Desktop?" Will Microsoft do the same?

yes, however those are called "Moon clips." The problem is that the movies tend to get everything wrong. They are also, by far, the largest "educational" tool Americans use today. You can see how this ends up with people's expectations of what happens in general, and especially moreso in the world of firearms. I can't count the number of horrible mistakes related to weapons, computers, geography, physics, etc in the movies I have seen in the last 3 yrs.

Ok, the word is LOSE not loose. Secondly, if you LOSE 1 drive, in a RAID 5, you recover from parity based on availability of processing time on the controllers and the algorithms in place on said controllers. You must not deal with heavy storage if you think that recovering 3.5TB is too much to recover from.
