you are just being obtuse now. There are plenty of packages that do just what you are looking for on linux. There are tons of free software packages available and some that you can pay for and get support if you so desire. Doing so usually gets you in touch with a company that does so much more than a shrinkwrapped company that puts you into the voicemail box of some salesman turned support specialist who knows the product for the full 98 days he's been there.

and most of those come with full suites of software. Microsoft's one CD is just the OS. Then you have to download the latest patches (Which you should do for any OS). I wonder how big Windows would be if it included several text editors, compilers, office suites, games, etc.

All you have to do is recompile one time and then just transfer the kernel you want to all the machines, change the boot loader and voila. In the Windows world you have 3 choices: You can download and install the updates by sneakernet, you can set up a patch management system for them or you can get a company image up and going and then reimage all the machines

    Wrongo buddy,

You think they use a single intel board now? You think intel boards stay the same long enough for them to care? You think they actually pay a lot for the support centers that they have in India? Yes, they would have to put forth some extra effort and validate one more motherboard. This is nothing special considering how often they have to do it. They get sweetheart deals from intel to stay away from AMD and spread FUD about AMD. This is not about selling a few systems with AMD CPUs. The parent and grandparent were talking about possibly losing contracts if their customers go to HP, IBM, etc. If they get products from a vendor that has what they want, maybe they won't come back to dell for their next purchase.
