Starting to think the OP didn't use google (or set foot in a Microcenter/Fry's/BestBuy in the last 5 years). There's a million sub-$100 USB line-level devices out there that will do the trick nicely. And now that I am done being a jerk, I'll say I am a fan of m-audio stuff for casual recording, but any of those sub-$100 doodads should be about the same level of quality, and if you're careful and read the packaging, you'll get something that can handle a line level input without distorting. A heck of a lot easier than keeping a lame old PC just b/c it has an input jack.
The author seems to wax melancholy for the era where gamers played nothign but puzzle games. Sorry, sat the same time I was enjoying Myst, 7th guest, 11th hour, dark eye, full throttle, grim fandango, et al, I was ALSO blowing things up in X-Wing vs TIE fighter, killing nazis and demons with whatever ID slopped out at the time (quake maybe? or maybe HAXAN, not sure...), stockpiling lumber in Warcraft, changing the fate of the netherworld in Afterlife, and so on.
There are PLENTY of puzzle games out now, this guy just comes across as old and uninformed. Nothign to see, move along.
Today on launch day, the new PS3 demo station sat unused while the Wii was being crowded around. A few folks picked up the controller and most of us made a comment that the graphics looked nice, but all in all, it's just a shiny, higher res version of something we have all seen before.
The Wii, on the other hand, looked pretty crummy graphics-wise, sitting next to the PS3; but playing Excite Truck with no cables attached and using tilt to steer was one of the most refreshing things I have seen in a long time (as far as games are concerned). I came out of EBGames wanting a Wii and not even looking at the PS3 game wall.
My point is that the in-store Wii really stole the PS3's glory, on launch day even!
Man, I hope this is a joke or a troll.
Conversely, this is why designers can't stand programmers. A bit of advice regurgitated from ed tufte--respect your data. You work hard to provide a great application, and then release it with a ridiculously difficult, ugly interface that took you ten minutes to code. Your app might be the best thing since sliced bread, but if it looks like Homer Simpson's car (http://www.a2zhobbies.com/Polar_Lights/Pop/PLM-40 00.html), no one's gonna buy it. Plenty of people make their apps work and look good. Maybe you should strive for the same level of quality!
The people that want it to "look nice" rather than to work are the culprits!!
The web will never go back to looking like Lynx or usenet. When enough people push the existing technology to get their mint yellow borders and their 2 pixels aligned, we all learn a little more, and the standards groups and browser manufacturers will hopefully be that much closer to each other. And the programmers will stay in their little back room and crunch code while we make pretty interfaces for it (joke).
I hate the argument that we should do X before delivering Y and Z. Often times there are entities willing to do X because they have the resources, and, according to some, they shouldn't because there are other priorities.
A company who makes product X may not have the resources or skills to deliver Y or Z, so why shouldn't they do what they do best?
The Microsoft single-play DVD must have been a format they were researching for Office 2006 and Longhorn install disks. MS finally invented their ideal perfect licensing and distribution technology!
I know audiphile opinions can vary greatly, but has anyone used the Shure E2Cs and the Etymotic ER6s? Have any thoughts on which are the better headphones?
I think what no one has touched on , is look who has control. I think Marvel is less likely to completely bone a comic movie than producers who view hollywood as a business.
Since they are actually putting their necks out and risking the worth of their "brands", perhaps they will put the kind of care and attention into it that the films deserve.
Less attention on the SONY logos, more attention to the radioactive spiders! Keep greedmeister Sam Raimi the hell out of it, and some of these might turn out all right.
Apple is not in trouble for the failing of the batteries, the class action alleges that they misrepresented the lifespan and play time of the batteries.
Lots of uses--plug a title into azureus, whenever your title shows up in RSS, the torrent downloads and starts. Keep a folder of RSS headlines as an active bookmark in Firefox, I can browse news headlines from slashdot, theguardian, photoshopnews, psphacker, thinksecret, apple developer and allakhazam (warcraft news) withing a minute. If anything interests me, I can head to the site. Browsing the headlines of those 7 sites would take much more time.
Especially concerning/., I don't have to read the latest google blip or microsoft flame, I can just get right down to the article about the super monkey collider.

I'm all for the Microslop bashing, but what does this mean for the *other* proprietary formats in use? No downloadable PDFs of tax forms, and no JPEGs? Just curious here--I work in publishing (with analysis of a lot of government documents), 80% of my source docs are PDF.
I am just imagining downloading a tax table in.txt or.csv format, 800 pages would turn into thousands of pages.
"...Apple is voluntarily recalling certain lithium ion rechargeable batteries that were sold worldwide from October 2004 through May 2005 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4."
You were looking at the Previous battery recall for the 15in Powerbooks, CLEARLY marked in the article as "Recall Last August." RTFA Indeed...
RotS was delivered to theatres between 1-2 hours before the opening time in order to cut down on piracy, apparently. Problem is, this didn't give my theatrwe (showing 20 prints simultaneously) to get them all loaded, as a result, it started an hour late. Talk about some pissed-off geeks.
So I would blame it more on faulty equipment than a scratchy print.
What better way to get your manifesto home after slaving away all day at the library?

Don't forget the Monster mouse cable for when you're editing.

I found a screen shot of the source, can't find an image of the app in use though:

WTS http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1565928393, cheap.
"Internets" is a reference to what george bush called it in one of his debates in 2004. Shame on you for not getting the joke.
Man, if child molesters and cop killers have a hard time in prison, who knows what levels of hell a spammer is going to face!

What, no PSP video?

Man, what do you have against apples?
If blockbuster had anything worth a crap I would rent there. They choked off the competition and don't have anything worth renting, therefore netflix.

I don't think it's doubting the honesty of foreigners, just expressing concern over the difficulty of catching/prosecuting international criminals.
So now real life can be as insanely crappy as the Matrix movies? Sign me up!
