The more time you "waste" on not taking a traditional route to a degree is simply more time that you'll learn about whatever you're interested in - and the more you learn, the harder it will be to go back to school and get a degree; simply because you'll have to spend more time with things you already know.
If you don't end up starting your own company, then that degree will be very useful; as just knowing something isn't as valuable as having a paper that says that you at least where smart enough to not get caught cheating at the tests...
"I'm not sure there's a huge market for people who want to watch TV on their computer, but if a company like Tivo can bring it from the internet onto our TV screens, I think there'll be some interest."
Why a company like Tivo, when a company like Apple (and many others) been doing it for years...
I've been able to connect my PowerBook to my tv since the day I got it (3-4 years ago); either to watch downloaded material, or DVDs.
Not only the current season, but how about prepaying to make sure there is a second season; from my blog...
2005-02-03 (P2P: The street performer protocol and the cancellation of ST Enterprise) When suprnova.org went down some said that suprnova.org had been their main source for finding and downloading the latest episodes of Star Trek Enterprise.
Ignoring if they downloaded the episodes legally or not, we find that there are a lot of users out there that want to watch ST Enterprise, but can't simply because no to them available stations carry it; ie they (a lot of them, at least) would gladly pay for access, but there's no one to pay.
For many of them the only legal option would be to wait months, and then buy the DVDs; but being a fan of a series you don't really want to wait, especially not when you know that you could download an episode of perfect quality each week, hours after it was first aired...
The stations that air the episodes when they are brand new ends up being the main income for the people making the series, and even some of those possible viewers will find it easier to download the episodes from the Net...
The result is that the series doesn't get enough viewers, and so it's cancelled. =(
What if they (UPN and Paramount) instead of just killing the show tried the street performer protocol?
Basically they'd go out to the public and say: "If we get enough money donated to us we'll keep the series alive for another season, and if we get [this much money] we'll release each and every episode for free on the Net; and if we don't get enough we return the money (less X% to cover our costs)".
I have no idea how much it costs to produce one season of ST Enterprise, and I have no idea how many would donate how much, but why not give it a try?!
It isn't really the game itself that needs to be written to take advantage of a second CPU (or whatever), it's the code that's always being reused (either something inhouse, or the engine that they're using).
People are lazy, and when things will work today as it is, most companies will rather focus on releasing the game asap than spending alot of time recoding what they've already got...
It comes down to how much money they can make in as little time as possible.
But, of course, once a company starts pushing their better performance/more features/more "beautiful" games, then everyone else has to catch up instantly; or else their profit goes down.
It's a "all of us or none of us"-kind of a game, with really really high stakes.
Will there be enough servers/bandwidth to actually inform the public about it, now that it's on slashdot???
I was wondering why the OpenWRT-button on my website didn't load; took me about 3 seconds to figure out that I should go check if some mean person had given OpenWRT some./-attention. =)
As soon as they're back up I'm saving a copy of that "button" on my own server/site.
If he knew what OS he's using he would have been smart enough to google for the answer... then again, maybe people prefer to spend maybe days getting lots of different (working and not working) answers from slashdoters, instead of getting something that works in about 5 minuters from google??!
Didn't say anything about japan; all I was saying was that in some areas of some countries *cough*the us*cough* the girls, law-wise, might be way too young to have sex... but they are allowed to get married, and have sex with their husband/wife... =/
In Sweden it's 15 for sex, 18 for sex-related pictures (not just nude, it gotta be that "this isn't just a nude young person, but a nude young person which is having dirty thoughts"-kind of a thing).
In some uneducated countries it's legal to have sex with even younger girls, as long as you're married with her... Guess what country it is I'm thinking about...?
Not only will it be useful for projects such as these, but will also help you fix friends computers (quickly check if it's a hardware or software-problem etc); and you can have a lot of "look, I erased Windows and installed Linux for you while you were away"-fun...;-)
"I can't afford going to the movies or to buy a DVD "
That's why (the g|G)ods* invented P2P.;-)
I'm clearly above average when it comes to going to the movies, but hardly ever buy any DVDs; most DVDs that I do buy are usually of the "hey, I loved that movie XX number of years ago"-kind, which means that they are 10+ years old, and usually quite cheap.
P2P... that evil thing which forces moviestars to either go broke or become politicians... well... here it happens to be legal to download[A] movies etc; and what I download is either:
1. New movies which I'm really interested in, but which won't be shown at the movies here for several months after the release in the US.
2. TVseries; every now and then an episode of something that I missed, but mostly tvseries on channels which aren't easily[B] available to me; and that no channel I've got and/or could get access to has shown any interest in.
Getting back to the whole DVD vs going to the movies-quality question... If "they" don't want to let me buy access to good quality I'm more than happy that I can get free less than perfect copies of the Net. If I feel that the movie I downloaded is worth it (basically if there are lots of good CGI), then I go to the movies and see it again; it's not like I remember the whole thing months later anyways, and going to the movies with some friends is a lot more fun than just sitting at home infront of the tele.
[A] not legal to set ut a server and share though. [B] I could of course build some kind of PVR, ship it to a friend in what ever country (ie the US) etc...
The PO box might not be a bad idea, but if you're outside the US you won't really need that (I get one snailmailspam per owned domain per year nowadays).
You also might want to get yourself a good spamfilter, instead of trying to hide.
Personally I use a combination of procmail (on in and outgoing e-mails) and bogofilter, which has for the past cpl of years (basically since bogofilter was created) stopped more than 99+% of all spam; with less than 1 false positive per month (out of 3'000-5'000 caught spam per month).
Basically I use procmail to catch a number of "I know for sure this isn't spam" (incl. using lists of outgoing message-ids) and "I know for sure this is spam" (incl. honeytraps, never used [random-words]@mydomail.tld which has been sold as real adresses to lots of spammers etc) to have the bayesian filter automatically trained to catch all new forms of spam.
So did I, but with a lil bit of luck you can save it... Either get the firmware from their website and try that, or use the instructions provided at www.sveasoft.com.
Of course not, but... don't worry, I'm sure you'll find a place that'll hire you some times soon; McDonalds is always looking for a few good people with great management skills.
Thanks for proving to us that it is important to ask your future boss the right questions (before he's hired).
Just do a search on/. and/or google and you'll find that powernapping can give amazing results for some people, and results is what matters.
Some bosses thinks that if they are forcing people to do the things that they perceive as "work" then that will result in more work being done, but that just isn't true.
Sure, at some places that might be true, but being a good boss isn't about forcing people, it's about understanding them and helping them do a good job.
And... sure... you might get more code written... but have you ever considered that if you tried to be a nice guy, maybe allowed a lil bit of powernapping for those that want to try that, maybe bought some fruit for a midafternoonbreak and just listened more to them... that then you might get fewer lines of code that does more with less resources, and that you'd get that within the same, or less, time?
So if you're the boss you'd fire anyone sleeping at work?
Have you ever worked with programmers?
Programming isn't just typing code, you need to design solutions... and that could be just like painting or writing a book, you need to be inspired, creative, "in the zone"...
A 30 minutes nap could be the difference between an hour worth of coding, and half a day worth of uninspired coding; at the right/wrong time that nap could, at a large enough project, be worth days or even works.
Why does it matter to you if people are sleeping or awake, as long as they're getting the job done?
Seriously, taking a short nap will increase productivity; and his view on naps might tell you a lot about flexible workhours...
Personally I might want to work 12+ hours when I'm getting a lot of work done, and during the days that it feels like I can't get anything done I want to leave early... and as long as I'm getting the work done on, or before, the deadline that ought to be ok.
I had the same problem with my/// T39m, but I'm getting much better results with a Nokia 7610; now I can control the computer from anywhere in my apartment (lots of thick concrete walls).
Just write it like you would a 3D tic-tac-toe... but it's impossible to make it large enough to be like a traditional crossword; using some kind of centerfoldish fold out-solution you sould be able to make it atleast 10x10x10, though.
IMHO that'd be large enough to be interesting, esp. since the reader has to think in 3D to solve it.
_Very_ good advice!

No, it's the other one.
Patent the idea of patenting other peoples ideas; that ought to stop most of Microsofts patents. =)

sveasoft
Instead of fans paying money for ads to save the show, why not ask the fans to donate money directly to the ones making the show???
X USD and it's kept alive for another season.
Y USD and it's kept alive, and released for free on the Net.
Less than X USD and the money (less fees/costs) is returned...
The street performer protocol saving ST: Enterprise?!
That one is so stupid that it actually works, I've gotten away with it a cpl of times. =D

Don't forget to support DSL by buying a USB (2.0) pendrive with it already installed:

Not if you're a resident of the EU...
Is this why I not that many months ago got an e-mail about my PayPalaccount now being handled by their EU-company instead of the US one???
