How is this better, let along insightful. The MOMENT Microsoft switches to the PPC platform for desktop computers, they IMMEDIATLY face competing from Apple. Steve Job's would be licking his lips at that thought, and that would be Billy's single biggest business mistake EVER. With the advent of OS X and the G5 Apple (giving a good nod to iPod users) Apple has already seen an increase in sales, and an increase in market share. I know of one person (my brother) who after using my power book for a semester at school, has sworn off PC and is now an Apple fan. So, Microsoft switching to the PPC would hurt Intel, no doubt, but then we would see a huge increase in Apple market share, (Apple just makes better computer's hardware/software PERIOD, not even mentioning the fact that OS X is BSD Unix based, making it a hellva a lot more friendlier to the FOSS community).
On second though, let Microsoft switch to the PPC, that would only give Apple some competing, enabling them to drop there prices.:-)
Not all of us can run SP2 -- It just breaks too many things.
I'm running SP2 and nothing has broken thus far. Normally when people complain about SP2 breaking stuff (like a game that will not play online after patching to SP2) it has to do with the upgraded firewall. Tweaking the firewall is all that is needed to get your game (and 9 times out of 10 X app)running agian.
All in all, I think Microsoft did a good job with SP2. The security center is something that should have been in the control panel to begin with. Its good to have some centralized location.
But yeah, SP2 fixed a lot of things in Windows and it really didn't *break* things, it just tighten some bolts that then required the user to go and loosen what he/she wanted to use. (instead of leaving the whole damn computer open)
Let's say someone writes a new program, and tries to bring it to market. The guy down the street sees it, copies it, and sells it as his own. What's going to stop him?
That's utter BS, that's why you COPYRIGHT your code if you don't want somebody to make a bit for bit copy of your program.
Now the person across the street may create a similar program to do similar things, using code that HE wrote, this creates compition, and is NOT a bad thing, (it may make you get off your ass and think harder about how to make your software better than generic X's software, but that's not BAD).
All software patients do is encourage monopoly which is good for fat cat CEO's and shareholders but VERY BAD for the general public.
actually, someone who is driving a hybrid would still pay less, cause they would pay the per mile tax AND the tax on gas(you really don't think government will give up the tax that they already have on gas do you?). The Hybrid user pays less money on the actually gas, but pays an equal amount for the per mile tax.
of course this is extremely silly, the over taxation of American society is going to be partially what turns this country into a third world nation in 4 years...
I think every time a FTTP article I must mention this, but this is one plus to living in Utah. the fiber based initiative is community owned and NOT owned by the Telcoms and just think, if there is enough of a geek swell to Utah, we could oust Orrin Hatch!:-) OK, that was delusional thinking, but, but, it might work, plus we'll have FTTH, not just FTTC!!:-) (which won't do much good because of the draconian community indecency policies, which effectively outlaws not only porn but anything >= R rated movies...On second thought, perhaps we can live with the telcoms, at least we can still get our porn from them;-)
...but my next PVR will run MythTV -- unless HR2391 passes and makes me a criminal for skipping commercials.
Screw HR2391, as long as I have my encrypted tunnel to an off shore proxy server, I can download MythTV from anywhere, and they (the government, the RIAA, the MPAA, etc) wouldn't be the wiser.
Honestly this doesn't effect *me* at all, I can get around these pesky little inconviences. Who this really effects is the average Joe who thinks the most important issue is restricting marriage to a certain class of people that is determined by gender. Once the other Americans who are asleep at the wheel see how fuck they really are *THEN* we might see some progress, but until then I can get by just fine, Act of Congress or no...
...to track students like this seem pretty insane.
students in High School are MINORS, meaning that they are in the custody of someone else. Normally this is their parents, and while at school, they are in the custody of the state. I have no problem with the tracking of KIDS (grade school to high school) to ensure that they are safe and secure from possible outside threats. RFID is not the only method we should rely on to keep kids safe and prevent such things as kidnappings, and such. It is an additional tool.
That being said, once a child turns 18, and is out of high school, that is when RFID tracking would begin to become worrisome to me, but until them I'm fine with it...
so how long before ISPs are going to be required to have these programs scan packets going across there networks?
In which case I will encrypt all of my data to a proxy server off shore. That way there's no way in hell my ISP will be able to look at what I am doing, and any file sharing program I use will show me downloading form outside the US.
I really don't see this effecting me, because I can get around it, long enough for the public to wake up, and realize they are getting raped in the ass by big brother and it's buddy, Corporations.
on the plus side- at least *somebody* writing for those episodes had researched the Eugenics Wars, TOS, TNG, and probably also TWK...
While not being a huge fan of Enterprise, I do like to catch that ep's at the very least from Suprnova, and I have to say, the last 3 ep's were impressive, if only from the POV that the Eugenics Wars have been a huge inconsistently all throughout Trekdom (from TNG onward). Its a little hard to reconcile the Eugenics wars, and Khan's shining moment in history, happening in the 90's (per TOS) when the 1990's has already happened!
Granted they mentioned being impressed by 20th century genetic engineering, when the first clone of a mammal happened in the last half of the 90's, so barring government conspiracies about super-solders, that's one huge plot hole right there.
All in all, I think I liked the first 2 ep's of season 4 better (alternate timelines are always fun in my book) even though I disagree with the outcome, (come on, Germany had no interest in taking over America, all they wanted was Europe!) I still thoroughly enjoyed the ep.
Back on topic with SG1 and SGA. I'm not looking forward to the time change that is coming on January 21st, which will put SG-1 in direct conflict with Enterprise. Enterprise fans already had to fight to get this season made, being in conflict with SG-1 will more than likely seal Enterprises fate for good...
If I recall, suprnova.org is hosted somewhere in eastern Europe, and that is why it hasn't already been taking down.
Domains by Proxy, Inc.

Shows that whoever registered the domain registered it with a company in the US, who has a TOS that states they release info to government/law enforcement agency on demand. Not very smart if suprnova is based in eastern Europe...
what would be really cool is if you could implement bit torrent as the method of P2P sharing that the GAIM plug in would use. Any link you send to a friend would be a link to the tracker, and the program would start UL/DLing the file depending on how many people need the file. Thus you get the benefit of Bit Torrent, namely, the ability for many people to download a file very fast.
Hell, as long as you develop (the GAIM plug in) out of the US there's not a damn thing the US can do (short of invading whatever nations are hosting the files and executables, which with four more years of Bush I could defiantly see the US doing).
It's getting to the point here in the US that if I want to be in any sector of the IT industry (outsourcing aside) I won't be able to stay in the US cause everything will be illegal. I would almost put 100 dollars down on the US implementing a firewall, bigger and better than China. Now that's a scary though!
Please EU, Russia, China, and the nations of the world BOYCOTT the US. Refuse to deal with us so the pro-corporate, religious whacko's that are in control of our nation will wake up!
The only reason Illinois stands out like a sore thumb (in a mainly republican Midwest) is because of Chicago, the third largest city in the US. Cities are bastions for the Democratic party, ergo because the majority of Illinois populations resides in or around the greater Chicago area, they tend to be more Democratic.
Outside of the greater Chicago area, the counties are remarkably Republican. In fact the running joke in Illinois is to have the red counties secede from Illinois because their voice is so often not heard, especially in presidential elections.
From on outside view, yeah, Illinois is an anomaly with in politics, but with inside the state it is pretty similar to other Midwest states. (right now the Republican party is very weak because of the late Governor Ryan, and his administration being VERY corrupt. Which lead to a HUGE Democratic take over two years ago.)
You can't really have more than a quarter petabyte of data you need to send right now, do you?
Maybe not right now, but just what till CERN gets their super collider up and running that should provide well over a quarter petabyte worth of Data...
Though, in the real world, IE buisness world, there is no real need to send that much data...
If only Americans could educate themselves on the REAL reasons for the Chernobyl disaster, (that the Russians had turned off EVERY warning and backup system, making it 100% likely that if something went just a little wrong, it would exacerbate into a larger problem exponentially).
Even three mile island didn't release anything into the atmosphere, and they made some pretty dumb mistakes there too, (like draining the water from the reactor, and then attempting to reintroduce it to only produce steam because the control rods where too hot).
Nuclear power, especially in the US is COMPLETLY safe, and I would not mind having one in my backyard.
I can't stand the Green Party, not cause I don't agree with the platform, most of there platform I do agree with, however, I don't agree with there obsession that current Nuclear power is bad for the environment, that is utter BS!
I'm sure to get modded down for this, but it has to be said...
No human has been to the moon, the radiation outside the Van Allen belt is just too high. No human will go to the moon or beyond unless we are able to properly shield our spacecraft from Radiation...
I've ordered Return of the King - the Extended Edition, released a few months after The Return of the King - the Theatrical Edition.
This is horribly repetitive, to the point of an obligatory reference, but Peter Jackson has said FROM THE VERY BEGINNING that the LOTR would come in TWO versions, the theatrical release, the movie for the public and an extended edition for the fans.
Others my, and do, (obligatory reference to Lucas and making super-duper, special extended editions of Star Wars, this time with all Ewoks replaced with singing Gun Gons **shutters**), attempt to milk the public for all there worth with endless special editions, but in the case of the LOTR you had a choice, you knew that the theatrical release would be released, and shortly thereafter the extended edition, so that if you choose, you could buy one or the other.
If this goes on much longer I probably be joining you...That is until the American people wake up and see that the precious gift of Freedom has been taken away from them as they have indulged in Big Macs, Fear Factor, and The West Wing. Once that happens I will gladly come back down and help in the ensuing Civil War, hopefully we can get support from the rest of the World (shouldn't be to hard, the US is already number one in the "Most Hated Nation" category).
A Sino / Russian military alliance would EASILY defeat the US Military. Combine that with the fact of how fragmented we are in this country as it is, if a mandatory draft was ever enacted, civil war would ensue. All the "rest of the World" would have to do is supply arms and munitions to the other side, possibly some troops of there own...
If Bush gets elected me thinks I need some training with an Assault Rifle, cause there will be War, whether it is a Civil War, or a Sino/Russian invasion (which would lead to a Civil War), a war is virtually guaranteed.
Which is even more of a reason to abandon our skewed view of the importance of the Presidency, and instead focus equally on all branches, and all levels (Federal AND State) of government.
Being an informed voter does not only mean knowing who stands on what issues, but also knowing how government works, and the power that the offices with in government have, and THEN deciding who you will cast your vote for.
I personally have no problem with a two party system when looking at government in this fashion. mainly because that if I see that one party has a strangle hold on power (currently the Republicans who control all three branches of government), I will vote for the minority to bring some balance back to government. When both parties have about 50% of the seats in Congress, and the Supreme Court is likewise about 50% ( or at the very least, extremely moderate because of the legislative balance making it harder to confirm extremist judges), that makes it a lot harder to pass extremist legislation.
This is ideal though, and would never happen for many reasons, number one being that the Republicrats are both owned by one entity, corporations.
Is the postal service a legitimate function of the Federal Government?
Actually, according to the US Constitution, Article 1, Section 8, Clause 7
The Congress shall have Power...To establish Post Offices and post Roads...
So yes, a post service is a legitimate function of the Government, as listed in the body of the Constitution its self. Our Federal Highway program is also legitimate, as it is also directly listed with in the main body of the Constitution.
I agree that a war with Korea could quickly escalate to a mini, if not, full out right World War III (nukes and all) and that the draft, with out a question, would be reinstated because of the HEAVY casualties that the US will face. breaking the cease fire with N. Korea, (we really didn't sign a peace treaty), and commencing a full scale war would be a lot more of a noble effort than the current war in Iraq...Hell, I would even been tempted to enlist, just to show my support (26 now, so a draft would evade me, at least for the first few years of the war).
That being said, with our dry drunk president, unless N. Korea suddenly develops massive deposits of oil than theres no way we are going over there...
Even better: MS switches to the PPC platform.
:-)

They're a spy agency. Their goal is to gather intelligence.
;-)
The CIA doesn't have a need to spy on americans cause the NSA already does that
The FBI spys on us, the CIA spys on them (Yes, the FBI are cops, but they also get counter-espionage duty). I don't know where NSA falls in the mix.
:-) The FBI are Federal Cops, The CIA spys on foriegn countries and the NSA spys on Americans.
Well kinda...
