Meh, the time is rapidly coming where Cable/Satellite will be obsolete. Just look at http://revision3.com/ and see where we are headed. Hell, if you want shows from broadcast tv, most of the stations offer their shows online (I know ABC does). Just embed a browser that can handle a flash plugin and bingo, you can watch any show you want, directly from the networks.

First we need to put some close-in-age exceptions into our laws so two teenagers who have sex are not charged as sex offenders, but once that is done, warm up the electric chair, hypodermic needle, etc.

No, if Americans had to pay for the roads they would be forced to quit their jobs or not eat.

Americans already pay for the roads, they just don't know it. Turning the roads into toll roads, and getting rid of the tax on gasoline would probably make driving more affordable because gas would probably be around $1 a gallon if it wasn't for all of the tax that was put on it and the cost of the upkeep of the road would be directly proportional to the use of the road. The more the road is used, the more money it gets for upkeep.

Keeping the roads private would allow them to be managed better by getting rid of the bureaucratic red tape that government tends to bring in with it's subsidized offerings.

The city planning was carried out fairly well and the suburbs aren't too sprawled compared to other US cities and everything's pretty decent.

You can thank Brigham Young for that one. Not only to he plan the city on a grid, but also made it so you could do a U turn with a team of oxen with out having to back up.

From the transit plan I have seen for the wasatch mountain area, they plan on eventually having commuter rail going from Provo to Ogden, starting in Ogden first. They are also planning on expanding light rail out to west valley and other 'suburbs'.

I served an LDS mission in SLC (from 1999-2001) and would always use the light rail to get downtown to the temple every monday (our 'day off'). In general, I found the public transit system in the salt lake valley very good. I never understood why the mission office gave almost every LDS missionary a car when our areas where at most 4 blocks and could be transversed by foot in under an hour.

    Without resorting to significant subsidies...

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. The road system in America is significantly subsidized, yet the rail system and public transportation systems are expected to make a profit! What. The. Fuck?!

Which is why I personally believe all public roads should be toll roads. Repeal the tax on gasoline entirly, and all other taxes that go into keeping up the roads. Use the tolls that are generated to fix the roads. Hell, Roads could even be entirely private, and *gasp* could be made to be profitable! (I know, asserting that profit making is good is blasphemy in slashdot's eyes).

If Americans had to pay for the use of the roads, explicitly, they may turn to public transportation. At least pay per use would bring the costs out in the open and allow the two to compete on the open market. (Oh wait, another slashdot faux pas, the market is evil because it allows corporations to make profit! on noes!)

Get rid of the parties, on the presidential level. Period. Make a law (would most likely have to be a constitutional amendment) that would make the election process of the president non-partisan. Then that would force candidates to tackle the issue's and not pander to the extreme wings of the party to get votes.

Just doing that would not be enough, I agree that we would need some changes to our electoral system. I am not an advocate for getting rid of the electoral college simple because it forces candidates to go states they normally would not visit (if we get rid of the electoral college, candidates would only focus on the most populous states). Instead, I would advocate for a change in the method of counting votes, something like Instant Run Off voting, or my preferred method, Condorcet.

This would address the problem of many people appearing on the ballot, because both methods deal with ranking of candidates, if some candidates don't get ranked they don't get counted. Which should happen if one does not have hold of a majority of voters. Yet, tyrrany of the majority is held in check because we would still have three equal branches of goverment.

Also, these methods are very good for single seat elections, such as for president. I do not believe this method should be used for electing members of the House. In fact, parties could be useful with in the republic in the house. The house should be elected by Proportional representation. This would help with the current problem of gerrymandering of districts if at every election we have districts align themselves to how the people voted. This would also lead to a more balanced representation of the peoples house. In this way, third parties could actually have a chance to be elected. Much like in the rest of the western world.

In my opinion, members of the Senate need to go back to being appointed by the State Legislatures, the people have the House to represent them, the States have had their representation taken away from them. Hence why we have seen an erosion of States rights over the years. If the States had representation with in the Federal government, we would see less violations of state sovereignty (the 9th and 10th amendments).

No, we don't. We need to get rid of all parties. The American political system was not built for parties. If you read the Federalist papers, and other writings, the founders where very weary of parties, or 'factions'. Specifically in Federalist Paper number 10 where Madison declares that the system of checks and balances set up in the Constitution is meant to limit the power of factions to rule of the majority, giving rise to wait has been describe as tyranny of the minority.

Mind you this is not the religion Joseph Smith re-organized. He made it clear man has to get knowledge from God, not from man. The current state of Utah Mormonism is due to years of isolation. Utah Mormons form a tight cliche and as a result, it is hard to break into that cliche for those who are not Mormons, or recent converts into Mormonism.

Sometimes I think if would be good for Utah Mormons to actually leave Utah, and live somewhere else where Mormons are in the minority. Then they would be forced to live with people who do not agree with them, and be able to expand there knowledge of the outside world.

At least that is why I am not in Utah.
