Yeah, the problem existed. Not the convergence question, but still. Imagine - you get in an accident, and you don't have any paper; you can take a pic of the license plate. Or someone commits a crime and you're there to witness it. A picture sure does help. From a legal perspective, carrying around a camera can really save your hide. Of course IANAL, but I can imagine the possibilities. It would make the difference in a "my word against your word" kinda case. Same goes for video. Imagine if you were assaulted and managed to catch the assault on video. Kinda makes your case more concrete doesn't it? From a "my word against yours" angle, having a camera on you at all times likely does help a lot.

And besides, what if you were in calgary right now and want to remember all the b00bs being shown. What better way to relive the NHL playoffs than through the joy of pictures!

and on that note, what if you were to shag a supermodel? No one would believe you (being a slashdot nerd), so now you can snap a photo while shagging a goddess! You will be the envy of your friends!

It's still a lot easier to setup FC1 than FreeBSD. For a n00b, it's definately easier.

Installing packages in FC1 is a matter of downloading an RPM and double clicking. Or use synaptic. No command line. For n00bs, it's the cat's ass.

As well, the desktop in FC1 makes sense. I'm sure they've improved on it in FC2.

And yes, I think configuring X is a waste of time. I've had to do it before, and I could do it again if I wanted to, but I really hate doing it. I shouldn't have to. The installer should do that for me.

You might find you don't need feature "X" and you can do without it, but really, most users aren't you. If there's an App out there they can't run, they won't be happy.

I guess you've never had to install Coldfusion on a FreeBSD box, just for example. No native support. You have to MacGuyver your way through it.

To each their own, but I really do like FC on the desktop. I just prefer FreeBSD on the server.

Then KDE ads some fun in there too. Yes, I know how to install stuff. My webserver runs FreeBSD, but I wouldn't recommend FreeBSD as a desktop OS to anyone but the most tech savvy. Many Linux stuff won't install, even under emulation, and it's definately an exercies in frustration. And the number of apps available is quite lower than Fedora. Really, for a desktop Unix-like OS, Fedora really does kick some serious ass... For a server OS, FreeBSD is the cat's ass... I love it. It's way easier to install than Gentoo...

    1) You state it's not a trojan.
A trojan is something disguised as one thing that is another. A perfect example of a trojan is the temperature tray thingy. It is disguised as a program that tells you the temp outside, while it secretly reports your browsing habits. It doesn't need to be malicious to be a trojan.

    2) You state a vbscript in outlook isn't a virus.
Why not? Those who have the outlook pane enabled in earlier outlook versions get hit by this; the script runs automatically and sends to everyone in your address book, in turn forward to those in their address book and so on. Just because it's written in vbscript doesn't mean that it's not a virus. Just because it isn't as lethal as some other viruses out there doesn't mean you can't call it a virus.

Yes, but that'll probably hurt their shareholders.

Let's assume for a moment that 20% of the windows market is pirated. Now let's assume microsoft has 90% of the desktop market. They start CD-Key checking, and let's say a worm starts forcing machines to reboot. Techno-geek can't patch. They reach an impass. They move to Linux. They move everyone they've installed pirate windows software to linux as well.

So now Microsoft boasts 63% of the mkt share because our 20% moved on (in an ideal world). How do YOU think that'll aftect the stock price? Of course, I'm just making up #'s, but still, you get my point. The people who pirate software are those who donot want to pay. They WILL move to Linux.

Thing is, most techno geeks will move over. For Microsoft, it's better for a geek to run Windows illegitimately, than to run their competitor. Loosing market share, even in the black market, is very bad.

So I suppose the move is welcome if you want to see Microsoft lose mkt share...
