If your windows PC is locked up it is because you are too dumb to unlock it, i run both linux and windows and there is nothing my linux box does that my windows box can not be made to do.

Most of the "blue screen of death - windoze sucks and is unstable" complainees haven't messed around with a windows PC since Win 95, man would you be scared if you actually took a look at what a technologically competent user can do with a windows 2003/XP/Vista box.

As for the BSoD, that only happens when you have hardware failure or install buggy drivers, the same goes for my linux box, it is just a multi colored graphics mess when that crashes.

Get out of your nerdy corner and realize that for normal people, the PC is just as exciting as the water/electrical supply system and how the traffic lights syncronize. People simply don't care and they probably shouldn't.

You find your PC's inner workings exciting, other people play with trains or model planes, stop forcing your interest on the rest of the planet's computer users.

Final rant, It's really nothing to be so upset about, there is much more to life than your chosen brand of operating system :-)

The fact that the earth hasn't seen levels like this in half a million years is like stating that it will never snow because the last three days has been 20 degrees celcius. Half a million year is nothing on a timescale measured in billions of years. What is interesting in the article however is that we see a shift from blaming carbon dioxide to blaming methane. This is done because a lot of evidence has been accumulated that contradict the doomsday scenarios of climate change caused by CO2. This is basically another article that is aimed at increasing funding for research into a change that is quite natural and has occurred over and over again for a long long time.

I am sure there where brilliant and innocent people on the ISP's that were blacklisted for ignoring their spam problems, shutting down their service sure made them do something about the issue. Sometimes you have to apply hard measures to get things moving in the right direction and the softie approach really is not doing it when it comes to the Nigerians. As for all the examples you state above (this may come as a shock to you), people actually managed to talk to their grandparents, study and do business transactions before the internet were invented. You may be in Japan but if you take a trip to Nigeria i am sure you will discover that it is not the common poor student/grandmother who is using the bandwidth. It is sad that your colleague lost those five figures, perhaps next time they could even try to call him (Phone, also good for conducting business and talking to grand parents).

I never expected my microsoft systems to be fixable by help of microsoft support, after all, the EULA pretty much dumps every responsibility on the end user. I, like other decision makers did however get the impression that linux was free to buy and came without all the license issues we have with other software. This is not the case however, linux is getting pricey and the license rules are a jungle. So when i purchase a product from one of countless linux enterprise vendors i simply get an overpriced product with yet more licensing issues from a company that is not very likely to be around in 2-5 years. When i purchase a product from microsoft i get an overpriced product with annoying licensing rules from a vendor that is likely to be around in 2-5 years and it fits into my existing management infrastructure. Most people here on /. seem to be idealists (Nothing wrong with that!) without a clue about large scale IT operations. we do not select our products based on ideologies but on numbers, adaptability, shelf life and ease of use, IT managers on large scale outfits are not clueless management nitwits but hardcore techies who had their hands in the dirt for many years and somehow got moved up in the system. If linux were as problem free, easy to use and cheap as everybody says, it would be running all of our desktops and datacenters today. The fact that it is not should serve as a wake up call to the community.
