Jimbo Wales meets with Sergey Brin and Larry Page

Jimbo Wales, Chair, Founder and life member of the Wikimedia Foundation met with Larry Brin, Co-Founder & President, Products of Google, and Sergey Brin, Co-Founder & President, Technology of Google in Stanford today to discuss hardware and bandwidth donations from Google to the foundation. According to Anthere, Vice-Chair, Contributing User Representative of the Wikimedia Foundation,

"It is currently proceeding, but details are not entirely worked out. We had a first proposal for which we gave feedback last week. Today, in Standford, Jimbo met with Sergei Brin and Larry Page, who were extremely enthousiastic about the whole project. The board has a meeting planned early march to try to finalize this a little bit more. Ant" [1]

Maveric149, one of the lead developers and most prolific of article contributers continued:

"I don't remember the specifics (ask Jimbo for those), but Google has at least tentatively agreed to give us access to a certain number of dual zeon servers at one or more of their data centers and with unlimited bandwidth. I've been told that there are no strings attached (meaning they don't expect us to do anything for then, such as having GoogleAds).- mav [2]

In short, this is wonderful news. I have helped with our grant applications in the past and, in addition to taking a lot of work, there is barely ever enough money to run what will shortly become one of the top 100 websites on the internet, and the only thing limiting Wikipedia's growth is hardware.

Tomorrow there will be a meeting in IRC to discuss our future grant applications; anyone wanting to hear more should keep glued to the Grants page and stop by http://irc.freenode.net/Wikipedia at 4PM UTC on Feb 10 (Sunday)

"Are you interested in learning how to build a bird house, or discussing Linux with other partisans? Or maybe in your spare time you want to make single-layer graphene sheets using Chemical Vapor Deposition.

Whether your interests run to knitting or brain surgery, chances are good other people out there share them. The new Google Groups not only helps you find information on millions of topics; now you can actively share ideas and opinions with others about each and every obsession of yours.

And if you don't find a group already focused on your passion, by all means start one. Invite others to join your group so that all interested parties can read and respond to messages, share opinions and ideas via email or your own group's web page. If you're looking for a group to join, we could definitely use some thoughtful insight (or idle speculation) over at my space elevator group.

Perhaps they realized that their link to "how to build a birdhouse" was to a post where 6 out of the 8 links were dead. Kaput. Or maybe proclaiming themselves as "Linux partisans" does not fit in with their "don't be evil" mantra, or their shareholders best interests.

  13. Why Wikipedia is and will be successful. on Ex-Britannica Editor Reviews Wikipedia · · Score: 1

Wikipedia is and will be successful because, as a plain matter of everyday fact, we trust what folks tell us when they sound like they know what they are talking about. We may not file it away with those rare 'engraved-in-stone' tidbits of information that we have collected, but for the most part we are willing to pass it along; letting the listener know that it lies in the category of "I'm not sure, but i've heard..."

To that end, perhaps Wikipedia's greatest value is in the external links to be found on the bottom, or even its categorization scheme, or links to works and quotes free to be used under fair-use. The Open Directory Project has largely failed due to corruption, but also because of one of it's inherent limitations: The ability to put the information in context.

Wikipedia deserves the benefit of the doubt. It has earned that. Mr. McHenry has failed to see the Internet as a phenomenon and cannot comprehend its future. He has failed to see our ability to filter through information and recognize when it may not be correct, and has not given any credit to our human ability and willingness to place information in mental categories of varying veracity.

I do not use Wikipedia as a citation in my college reports, but I do use the .edu and .gov citations it has pointed me to, and, as a mental category, I do for the most part trust that the information in the article reflects what I will find on that site.

These points are only the tip of the iceberg. The biggest point is that Wikipedia's success speaks for itself and the encyclopedia does not ask for nor require for us to defend it. Only those with a vested interest in profiting from the sale of information have need to worry.

See the Political Compass for a visual representation of where Michael Badnarik actually stands. Their quiz will also place you visually, and from reading their FAQ it really sounds like they have an appreciation for statistics, be that what it may.

Also found in the FAQ is an interesting tidbit about Americans and our seemingly skewed idea of just what a libertarian is (they are Brits):

You can't be libertarian and left wing

This is almost exclusively an American response, overlooking the undoubtedly libertarian tradition of European anarcho-syndicalism. It was, after all, the important French anarchist thinker Proudhon who declared that property is theft.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the likes of Emma Goldman were identified as libertarians long before the term was adopted by some economic rightwingers. And what about the libertarian collectives of the mid-late 1800s and 1960s?

Americans like Noam Chomsky can claim the label 'libertarian socialist' with the same validity that Milton Friedman can be considered a 'libertarian capitalist'.

The assumption that Social Darwinism delivers more social freedom is questionable. The welfare states of, for example, Sweden and The Netherlands, abolished capital punishment decades ago and are at the forefront of progressive legislation for women, gays and ethnic minorities - not to mention anti-censorship. Such established social democracies consistently score highest in the widely respected Freedom House annual survey on civil liberties. Their detailed checklist can be viewed at http://www.worldaudit.org/civillibs.htm . Similar social developments would presumably be envied by genuine libertarians in socially conservative countries - even if their taxes are lower.

Interestingly, many economic libertarians express to us their support for or indifference towards capital punishment; yet the execution of certain citizens is a far stronger assertion of state power than taxation.

N.B. The death penalty is practised in all seriously authoritarian states. In Eastern Europe it was abolished with the fall of communism and adoption of democracy. The United States is the only western democracy where capital punishment is still practised.

"With the resignation of Larry, there is a much less pressing need for funds. Therefore, all plans to put advertising of any kind on the wikipedia is called off for now. We will move forward with plans for a nonprofit foundation to own wikipedia, and possibly to solicit donations and grants to help us carry out our mission. (Ironically, I think that grant money would come with many annoying strings attached, which we could not accept, comparted to advertising money, which is virtually 100% string-free.) Just as the National Geographic Society is supported in large part by advertisments in the National Geographic Magazine, I expect this to be a potentially necessary thing at some point in the future, if we wish to have an impact beyond our own little corner of the Internet. (And, I think we all do.) But for now, there's no pressing need unless and until we find chaos descending on us from the lack of constant oversight. The hosting of Wikipedia I can continue to do for no charge for the foreseeable future. Even if Wikipedia traffic were to grow by a factor of 10, I would be willing to absorb all the bandwidth and hardware costs. If it grows beyond a factor of 100 or 1000, obviously, alternative solutions would have to be found."
