High taxes hinder capital accumulation, and capital investment is the bedrock of modern civilization. I would like to see someone argue the contrary.
The subject study seems to argue the contrary. From the summary:
The reduction in the top tax rates appears to be uncorrelated with saving, investment, and productivity growth.
What these tax rates do change is who will be saving and investing in the economy. Let the rich accumulate wealth and yes, they will invest it. Let the middle class accumulate it and they will invest it as well. Or spend it and fuel the economy. Right now, capital is insanely cheap. What we need to kick start growth is customers.
The other thing to keep in mind is the effect that income disparities have on the productivity of the working class. Eventually you get something like the Soviet system. Where the workers grumble that "they pretend to pay us and we pretend to work".
"The creepy guy who lives over the road who keeps watching you through a crack in his curtains" is a s/w engineer for Diebold. Get used to watching the West Wing curtains crack open for the next four years.
Off site data backups may be a good idea. But when HF traders have to be within microseconds of the exchange systems, a cave in the Rocky Mountains just isn't going to cut it.
Because they could have been parked in someone's garage and gotten flooded. And that would be the difference between some clean up work and a house burned to the ground (or water line).
That only works within the local POTS network. If the call originates from a different exchange, they don't know the source number, only the exchange it came from.
E911 services are not intended to be used across exchanges. When you call 9-1-1, you get routed to the dispatch center local to your exchange.
So is this an issue of a juror posting a comment to the local paper? Or a juror reading the news in that (or other) papers concerning this trial? because if its the latter, there could be numerous jurors who read it but didn't submit a comment.
If our system depends on jurors keeping themselves ignorant of current events rather than being able to ignore information from outside sources, we're screwed.
I'd really like to serve. But only when its not a major hardship for my business. I have only been requested to sit in a jury pool four times in my life. On every occasion, it coincided with my involvement in submitting a bid or proposal for a contract. Putting my paranoia hat on, I suspect that a competitor may have a buddy working at the court clerk's office. And they submitted my name for their pool.
On the other hand, when I've had some free time, I called the court and asked if I could volunteer for a jury pool. They don't take volunteers.
I found the links to various terrestrial applications of the x-ray diffraction technology to be quite interesting. Portable or just more compact lab equipment based on this could be quite useful.
Who knows? We may soon be able to run a sample through one of these and see what Slashdot editors have been smoking.
Right. But Eclipse doesn't force you into that stuff. The boilerplate is there, if you want it. It can be an annoyance, but it can be bypassed. I've dashed off a number of very ugly Java apps using Eclipse and it still provides some useful features. I've also imported objects that I started using vi. No problems (a few warning '!'s but it builds and runs).
I'm sure I could configure Eclipse to fit a custom coding style. But I don't do this full time, so its easier for me to skip the stuff I don't need then to bend it to my will.
Dawkins' baseball analogy misses the point. I too am ignorant of baseball. But there are no elements of society that take umbrage with my ignorance or try to convert me. They simply don't invite me to watch games. Otherwise, we get along just fine.
Creationists aren't just ignorant of evolution. In fact, some of them are very familiar with its theoretical basis. But its a knowledge borne out of the need to fight against a competing ideology that they cannot tolerate. I don't understand religions. I haven't studied them much, because, to the extent that I have, they aren't of any use to me.
Likewise, I don't know every plot twist of every Star Trek series. Some people do, but that doesn't make it reality regardless of their depth of knowledge. And I don't think that any of them believe so either (a few nut jobs excepted). Understanding religion has its uses in understanding human society. In much the same way that understanding the mythology shared by any group does. Those that do understand it, but keep it in the context of a set of tales; more power to them.
That's the wind speed. And you are correct: Its not a big deal.
But the size of the storm is going to increase the storm surge. Add to this the full moon tide (spring tide) and sea levels are going to rise quite a bit.
Now figure the added time that a storm this size will dwell over land, dropping more precipitation. The inland flooding will be bad. Worse yet due to rivers' inability to flow as well against the extra high tide.
The wealthy owners of these yachts expect them to appear in all of the party spots around the globe. They don't skipper them themselves*. They have a crew to do it. Nevertheless, having the thing sunk by a rogue wave traveling between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean isn't acceptable.
*They probably fly in and meet the boat just offshore. Where they can stand at the flying bridge with martini in hand while the actual skipper is at the real controls in the wheelhouse. It makes for a great entry into the Monaco harbor.
If you want sleek and minimalist, take a look at Wally Yachts. Personally, I prefer the ones with the big stick in the middle with those cloth things hanging from it.
They just get nervous and give the wrong answers.

In the universe??? Some of us have tentacles instead of fingers! Your puny keyboard is useless for us!
Besides, the damned thing doesn't even have a Linux key.
We found these heaps of backup tapes down in the basement. We just shoveled them into the boilers and kept the generators running.

I'm crying crocodile tears for them.

So is strapping on an exploding vest.
.... and the solar powered black helicopters have been sent on account of your asking too many questions.
What ads? I don't get any ads with my Google News headline pages.
I guess if France wants their percentage of zero .....

Dr. Noah (Woody Allan) in Casino Royale made a bomb that would kill off all men over 4' 10" tall.
I have no mod points, but agree.

I hate to be a nit-picker, but are those iMac monitors daylight readable?

Big panels of vertical glass. What happens when one of them takes a good sized wave?
