No, I(dio)T departments are in it for the money. Usually, the people who they work for think of their department as some voodoo witchdoctor shop, and believe anything they are told regarding security. Then you have these weekend wizards who couldn't figure out which side of a burger to flip, so they decided to take on getting a promising IT career at some tech school they saw advertised on TV, and now they follow the Microsoft line all the way to the hilt. Right... let's see, use Microsoft's instructions on how to keep their virus magnet hole riddled software safe. Pardon me while I retch. So these wonderful IT pros snow the bosses about what they do, and how they do it, and the bosses are none the brighter, and say sure, go for it. Meanwhile productivity is stifled, and the boss has got no clue in hell what is going on, but BY GOD, DON'T DARE ASK ME TO GET THE WITCH DOCTORS TO DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT!!!! Thus sayeth the boss. All hail the boss. Whee. Can you tell I have to deal with a first class I(dio)T department where I work?

If you send something sensitive, somebody can get hold of it one way or another. I guess there's some thrill involved in all of that, but when I contact the mothership, it's always face to face. No reason letting you humans in on the secret.

He laughed at me, said I didn't know what I was talking about, and went on to probably be the only person on the planet to have a total DAT set-up. I think he had a Sony Beta machine, too, come to think of it.... I tried to warn him off of that, too. At least the command line has a GUI! (gnome-terminal, xterm, whatever)

I am an extreme advocate of the GUI in Linux, and I am also an extreme advocate of making Linux as non-terminal intensive as possible. My main reason I want to see Linux as totally user friendly as possible is the simple reason that there are so many people out there whose only desire is to use a computer to browse the internet and use email. Linux is perfect for this as long as it's as simple as possible, meaning never ever ever having to do anything in the command line. And why would I be so driven to being Linux to these people? Because they're stupid. God love them, but they are. They have no idea what they are doing, so they browse the internet, open emails, get ungodly amounts of crap on their machines, and end up with a totally useless box. When they try to have these boxes repaired, they are told that it will cost 200 dollars. I fix them in little or no time for usually 50 bucks in my spare time. Now I would turn these people on to Ubuntu, which I use, but it's still just not quite totally there yet.

I expect it will be within two years IF and only IF the developers stop focusing on eye candy, and stick to the fundamentals of what would make Ubuntu THE primary Linux distro that any moron could install, run, upgrade and never be locked out of X, or have any catastrophic failures.

Ubuntu excites me because of the vision they have. They will be bringing this to the masses one day, I'm sure of it. The beauty of it is; on the one hand you have a KISS operating system that anyone can use without the fear of ending up with a useless box that will cost $$ to fix, and on the other hand, you have a highly technical operating system with a terminal that tech-oriented folks can use any way they want. Remember, no matter how much gui based an os is, as long as there's a command line, the techies ought to feel at home. And what is the problem in that?

Dang EPD needs to come up and see what's going on. I don't think they have a clue that we're not as bad off as Atlanta is. But we do need the rain. Not very scientific of you to present it that way. And yes, what he said was totally hilarious. Get both brain cells oscillating at the same time, and you might see the humour in it. (Please note the typical "politically driven mod point system" at work here at slash dot. I really wish they would do away with mod points, as they are not used intelligently at all.
