The quality on YouTube varies wildly because of the sheer number of videos on there. Some are pretty good and some are really bad. Google Video on the other hand has far less content (and far less interesting content, AFAIC) and maybe on average the people who upload to it tend to have higher-quality original material.

I rarely care about the quality on YouTube. After all, if I'm looking at an 80s commercial I haven't seen in 20+ years I don't expect HD quality. The obscure cool stuff is why I find YouTube compelling, not the "lonelygirl15"-like crap. YouTube is to video what Napster was to music in the early 00s. It's the most amazing collection of obscure crap you thought you had forgotten or really never thought you'd find. I really like it.

What an ignorant flame disguised as a thoughtful and informed reflection

I don't know exactly how you expect to get this to stick, here. Anyone can read the parent post and figure out that there's nothing there that constitutes a "flame". Do you figure someone will look at the jumble of important-sounding words and poetic phrases like "Non free software is the dead hand of the past clinging to control" and go wow, this guy deserves to be modded up? I simply don't understand what else you could possibly be expecting.

Do posts like these infuriate you? They obviously do. Do they not meet your standards for sufficient pointless Microsoft bashing or requirement for unequivocal adoration of free software based on ideology rather than technical merit and practicality? If that's the case, you really need to think about why you post here. You seem to take it very seriously and dedicate large amounts of time to it (6,000+ posts) yet usually just go about it all wrong.

You know, maybe you should start paying attention to the advocacy post that seems to follow you around. Hyperbole and mischaracterizations (not to mention that childish "M$" thing that seems to get you off) help absolutely no one, especially yourself. More importantly, understand that there are people who will disagree with you, and they have as much a right to post on Slashdot as you do. It's unsettling to see someone who takes someone else's opinion as a personal insult. That always reminds me of people like Michael Savage and Rush Limbaugh.

You know, I thought about the same thing when Microsoft was forced to unbundle WMP from XP. I mean, one of the first things I do when I set up a new XP box is install Winamp. I never use WMP. Yet in their infinite wisdom, the EU decided that I was being "harmed" because RealAudio can't convince people to download their spyware vehicle enough to make a profit. And that cost Microsoft a good couple of billion.

If they had been serious about controlling Microsoft they would have gone after the unholy PC maker/Microsoft alliance. But no, that would probably have affected more European companies. So, we have Windows XP N. I for one find it hilarious that pretty much the same demographic that whines about government involvement in their lives were more than happy to see Microsoft get the shaft. Whatever makes you tick, I guess.

These things have a root in protectionism, as always. Europeans just love to dilute markets enough through regulation that consumers end up with less and no one makes any money. The idea that people would go to another player/music service out of choice because they have realized that DRM is bad for them is completely foreign to our pseudosocialist European friends. Competition is good only as long as the they have control over it.

No, I am not "overly defensive". Look through twitter's posting history. He in on record stating that the Xbox is "shit" and a "failure", and he would like nothing more than for "everyone" to stop using XBox and go to PS3. Not because of the relative technical merits of the platforms (to your point), but because he "hates" Microsoft. Or "M$", as he likes to call them.

As far as twitter is concerned, choice and competition are good as long as "M$" isn't involved.

And to answer your point, I don't think one platform will become dominant. Microsoft does not have the same (unfair) leverages here they have on the PC platform, and even though they might have some technical advantages, Nintendo and Sony have the brand and game ecosystems to gain enough counterbalance. So I think they'll continue to compete in a level playing field, and that's good for everyone.

But of course twitter can't deal with that concept. His infantile hatred of "M$" dictates that he must find a way to wax poetic about how we are all blind to their "technical inferiority".

That's my take. Surely MySpace allows anyone to design their web pages in many ways, so the fact that *so many* of them suck twelve ways from Sunday is an indication that such "design" is a choice, and not a directive. I'm sure they have templates, and the templates cater to different "tastes", but I'd be surprised if MySpace doesn't let you create a simple page, regardless of whether or not it passes the W3C validator.
