  1. Most useful for a windows newbie : on Useful Apps for First-Time Windows Users? · · Score: 1

One of the most useful things about Windows is the ability to Run cmd.exe, and then type Format C:\ :) Then go ahead and install Ubuntu (Or your fave Linux Distro)

VoIP cannot be trusted for emergencies.. what if your DSL or cable modem goes out?

May be not in most of the current deployments .. But when you get IP connectivity through a (gig)Ethernet port in your wall, directly connected to the Telco/SP's equipment, this should not be an issue.

a lot of companies are either bound by contracts or - more importantly - by internal applications that are broken enough only to work with windows (in that case, to be more specific, mostly word, excel and access).

How true .. ! Though, the M$ Office Suite is workable under Linux, thanks to Crossover. The main hindrance, IMHO, is the plethora of "internal" software, doing stuff such as Time Sheets, Payroll, Expense Reimbursement, etc - which are using M$ and not an OS agnostic web/app) framework

Not only is Linux not yet very widely used on the desktop yet, but its userbase is also so hopelessly fragmented between "distributions" that it is quite difficult to release an end-user-installable desktop tool for Linux.

From the release perspective, While this distro-flood may be true to a large extent, this has not stopped a lot of popular software from being presented to the users in a distro-agnostic manner. Examples that come to mind are realplayer, gaim (which uses autopackage), even Java ..

I would say that it is not a major issue, especially for the creative and fertile minds at google !

Is this why Google Earth, Google Desktop Bar, Google Web Accelerator all support Windoze only ? Google might be harnessing the power of Linux behind the scenes, but all of its innovations for desktop users are on M$ only. Granted, that they are Beta/Preview versions .. but Linux could be a great candidate too !

I know this is off topic and will be modded down, but this is not a rant. I submitted this story yesterday itself, feeling this was my chance to "give back to the community". I am not sure why this was rejected, when I feel that the post was coherent and grammatically/lexically appropriate. May I suggest a small "Reason" for rejection being handed out so that we can improve our journalistic skills to the high standards of /. ?

A format isn't open until it has actually been standardized by an independent body that can guarantee that it is free from patent or other claims, and until it has been demonstrated that it can be implemented independtly by actually doing so. Does this mean that pdf is not open enough ? As mentioned in comments upthread, adobe has made available the entire pdf spec. Sure, they could change it anytime, but that would just break a great standard, and the goodwill of millions around the world.

the Feed is owned by corporations, and their agenda to increase consumerism has led to such privacy-stripping "innovations" as predictive marketing (getting "bannered" by merely looking at purchaseable items) and constant interruptions (such as chats being broken by Google AdSense-inspired ads). This has been shown in umpteens of movies - The Minority Report being the most recent one. It has, actually been put into practice in intellligent homes - Bill Gates' mansion boasts of "Paintings" - screens on the wall which change the picture based on the person who enter's the room.

Agreed that 1/10th of the budget could be used for much greater needs present before the country. However, I wonder how many times a government (of any country, for that matter) cut the spending on benefits to its politicians? How many times has the election expense been curtailed and money utilized in social initiatives rather than wooing the electorate ? Apoligize if this has become an OT post, but the intent was to point out that there are other avenues also available for social upliftment.

It is unfortunate that the "leading" nation in the world has taken this step backwards. At a time when space exploration requires a major boost and research into space colonization as well as cheaper travel technology needs to be the priority, the cut might slow down these efforts. More worrying than the NASA budget cut is that of "environment programs". At a time when new inroads need to be made into environment presercation technology and practices, this cut may stall new developments
