i've been waiting for Mandrive 2009 for KDE 4.1 as 4.0 was supposed to be for developers.
mandriva, and mandrake before the merger with conectiva, was the distro of choice for me. mandrake 6.something was the first distro i was able to install, i still have that disk somewhere. for a little while i flirted with ubuntu but kept coming back for one reason or another. actually, i kept returning because i have a dell vostro 1500 laptop, honestly, i'd been better off with an abacus than this garbage, but anyways. mandriva 2008 was the only distro that would even load without doing voodoo incantations.
mandriva 2008 would work very nicely, but bluetooth was a little flaky for me. mandriva 2008.1 fixed that and fixed the multimedia keys on the front of the laptop (fixing the last little thing that didn't work out of the box).
so, with high hopes i downloaded mandriva 2009. ugh, what happened?!? my bluetooth is back to being troublesome. the mouse would say 'connected' and not do anything. power cycling the mouse would, well, 2 times, actually, make it work. then, kbluetooth would disconnect and reconnect to the mouse and the mouse would not work again! ugh!!!1!! the multimedia buttons stopped working!
most vexing for me was wireless. now, this P.O.S. laptop has a broadcom wireless module that needs ndiswrapper to work. now, mandriva 2009 recognized it, so said the control panel. couldn't use it but it was there! oh well, install the driver using ndiswrapper... 'wireless-tools could not be installed'!!! ok, hook up the wired connection and install wireless-tools. setup wireless > error! 'could not connect to ndiswrapped interface'!!! wow! ok, check to make sure ndiswrapper is installed. yup, there it is. uninstall ndiswarapper. check. reinstall ndiswrapper. check. install wireless card. smae error message!!!!
ok, noobie time (though i've checked in on linux for many years, it was mandriva 2008 that i switched permanently to linux). reinstall mandriva 2009. go through the same mess. still no go.
ok, install mandriva 2008.1. happy again!
now, don't count me out yet. i'll just wait for 2 weeks before retrying. bye then, these bugs should be worked out. i have faith in the mandriva team.

i was looking forward to trying kde 4.1. i know it is quite a bit different than 3.X. T-minus 14 days:-)

btw, the revamped installer is fanatastic! the artwork is simply incredible, you have to see it!

i hope mandriva 2009 works better for you than for me. I FULLY BLAME THIS DELL VOSTRO MONSTROSITY THAT HAS GIVEN ME NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS SINCE I GOT IT. the windows cd they gave me WITH this system COMPLETELY CRAPS ITS BRITCHES. god damn vostro...
The worst thing to do to greedy RIAA asshats is to share really free music. There's more high quality music at that one site than you can listen to over the next 100 years.
i wonder why this comment is modded -1?
www.archive.org not only has DRM free live and studio music, but copyright expired movies, books, etc, etc etc. it's an amazing site and parent deserves to be modded up not down for making an interesting comment.
i hold microsoft in a high esteeming pile of shit.
the following is an explanation of a lame joke:
i'm spanish and i remember 2'nd grade english class in puerto rico.
teacher, " espoon, espoon "
kids, " poon!, poon! "
me, " spoooooon! hahaha! "
(give me a break, it was 2'nd grade:-)
i was raised in usa, just went to puerto rico for 2'nd grade
sure, how else can the government terrorize its citizens?
lol. but you are absolutely right. it never was about terrorism, but about control. see, those in control have managed to implement a system where NO PROOF(patent pending) is required for detaining any person. watch for the next step, taking it outside the airports. give police the authority to detain and interogate a man sitting and watching the children at a park because he 'looks' suspiciously like a pevert (i hope they remember to take along the guy's kid).
I'm not sure if Rich is offering any downloads though they did (still do?) have a myspace page where you could sample his amazing guitar work. Watching him play the guitar was like watching a majic show. He'd work pedal after pedal, often at the same time, and sing as the only guitar in the band. His wife has an amazing voice, pretty, too, but you didn't hear that from me:-).
That's like asking why I "tolerate" the speed limit, or why I tolerate my bank demanding I pay my mortgage after signing the contract to do so (okay, so those are kind of crappy examples)
you are right, let's fix that now. "That's like asking why I "tolerate" the speed limit in my Pinto, or why I tolerate my bank demanding I pay my mortgage on said fine automobile after signing the contract to do so (okay, so those are kind of NOT crappy examples)"
see...? your examples are now less crappy because they reference cars AND simultaniously rise to the/. level.
Even if you put your cat in a microwave oven, it won't get cancer (though it will die a pretty horrible death)...
in the spirit of scientific exploration, i tried this.
the good news is that that shady chinese restaurant down the street is having a special for tomorrow's lunch:-)
i kid! i kid! i love the chinese (tastes good with soy sauce:-)
i've been learning c++ on my own for a while (i got stuck on the concept of pointers, recently resolved(!)) but i thought your article was very helpful to me (again, a complete rookie). i especially appreciated tip number 5 (Premature optimization is the root of all evil). i've found myself wondering if what i'd written was "the best way possible" instead of "will it (even!) run".
anyways, don't let the slashdot flamebaiters get to you. you set out to write for a rookie and you succeeded.
btw: "It's worth a visit to see just how much damage you can do with an encyclopedic knowledge of a programming language, combined with a lack of shame." cracked me up!:-)
i don't know... i was just thanking you for posting a comment that was actually on topic... all the comments above yours are off topic (and the usual (boring) rants about ThisIsBetterThanThat-Lier!ThatisBetterThanThis)
some of the distros out there are run by a "dictator" (of sorts) and the community rallies around this person and supports them (knoppix (if i recall correctly, among others). seems like a good idea as it organizes the community.
though i'm sure it's to late for gentoo, linus' way of working with the community seems the best way. he started it, he makes the choices. why not have a Gentoo mm (for example) that is a sandlot for ideas and VGentoo (Vanilla Gentoo) for stable releases?
an aside: why don't the vocal minority trouble makes (in every project) just leave and create an OpenGentoo? lmao
a second aside: every, and i mean EVERY, vocal asshat makes a poor, POOR leader.... every MBA also;-)
...but against OSS it is only a bump in the road...
i respectfully disagree with you. it can be a major "bump" in the road. the guys (and gals) at reactos.org had a time where they were nearly paralized by a FUD campain. A complete code review might not take to much time for a small project like 7-zip.org but can be a nightmare for the ReactOS folks (and others near or bigger than them)
i don't believe FUD should be taken lightly. it should be comepletly untolerated.
...or it should be unilateral. start spreading FUD about MS. start publishing in blogs around the world in as many languages as possible about some software patent you have that Microsoft is violating. but why stop there? tell your neighbors that using Windows (whatever flavor they use) has been shown to cause carpal tunnel.
it doesn't have to be true. that's what the 'U' in FUD is all about:-)
the solution seems to be to document everything then pirate windows (as i did) since you have a valid license (as i do) and no remediation. counter sue when it comes.
when is windows xp not windows xp? when it is full version, upgrade edition, oem edition, e-Machines edition (seriously, oem editions don't accept eMachine's license), corporate edition... ( i know i'm missing some)
but enough ranting. i fixed mine with ubuntu and keep a fully licensed-pirated windows for ONE game;-) if you play C&C Renegade i play as iggy_mon (i know you didnt see that coming:-)
next step is to virtualize xp in ubuntu and have a spare drive for the pr0n;-)

Estimated number of deaths in the conflict have ranged from 50,000 (World Health Organization, September 2004) to 450,000 (Dr. Eric Reeves, 28 April 2006). Most NGOs use 400,000, a figure from the Coalition for International Justice that has since been cited by the United Nations.
i'd rather they didn't lay around. it's nice to see the payoff for good play but this is supposed to be a game not an experiment in psychology (i'm guessing here, maybe it is:-)
"Pictures of the rat's nest of wiring that's the Z80 project is..."
far be it for me preach in any way, shape or form so i'll just offer a few tips;-)
the best wire for the breadboards (proto-boards) is 22-gauge solid core. i noticed that some of the wires you are using seem (from the picture) to be of a greater thickness. the reason to use 22-gauge is that they fit perfectly in the breadboard holes. anything with a wider gauge will reduce the useful life of said board (first hand experience:-)
i'm in awe of the complexity of your circuit (for being a rookie that is amazing:-)). your ability to troubleshoot would go up exponentially if you laid the wires on the breadboard routed them (as best you could) around everything. in particular, on your small board, the chips can't be seen! lol also, neat wiring allows for easy expansion of the circuits
my prof in college had instilled in me the wiring-bug (if you will). not only did it make troubleshooting simple it also made transferring to a perf board a painless procedure.

In the end, Apple decided to reveal the iPhone several months ahead of its official June launch because it could not keep the secret any more. Apple has to file with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for the permits needed to operate the iPhone, and once those public filings are made, Apple has no control over the release of that information. So, Jobs said, he made the decision to have Apple tell the world about its new phone, rather than the FCC.
