But hey, none of the replies to this looked at the bright side. This is a perfect solution for places you want to keep the reef back from- ie. keep it from growing. Dunno why one would want that, but still.
When I was in middle school we had a generator in the science class that gave us wireless power. The teacher fired it up, gave us all fluorescent tubes, then turned off the lights. As he turned up the power on the thing, our lights began to glow brighter. I've always wondered why this hasn't been used more, since we didn't discuss side effects with it back then.
Where I'm located, we don't get all that EDGE network or G3 stuff, let alone a decent feed of XM. We DO get radio. So antiquated or not, it works where this newfangled technology sucks. And it's easy to build a reciever and great for kids to learn about. I'm 30, and yes, I think my kids should understand how the technology they are using works. Up next is a shortwave receiver. Old or antiquated doesn't mean useless or worthless. Just because you live in an area that has it (and probably a larger density of people as well) doesn't mean it fits all over. Areas like mine aren't rare.
OpenDoc was actually a group venture with IBM and a few others IIRC. In OS/2 and eComstation we still use it. Also, if you go to IBM's website (and Lenovo as well since they just imaged support section), look in the URL and you will see it's grabbing OpenDoc documents to display. It was a cool tech, just too bad it never took off. There were other parts of the "Open"XXXX standard they put together. OpenDoc just being the most widely used.
I've got to agree on the Gadgets vs. Widgets thing. Had them in BeOS for ages. Getting tired of this- *especially* since a few devs from BeOS are actually werking at Apple now. Spotlight and the indexing filesystem attribtes kinda thing, also since the BeOS guys went there. It's nothing new people. OOOOO look! Windows has a folder, OS X has a folder! OMFG they are SO copying! It's imitation, it's flattery...it's gotta be. And of all groups talking about copying interfaces....
Where I live, we don't have 911 address recognition (911+ is what they call it). Even then, they seem to not be able to get anywhere very fast at all. I'm still on a POTS system, and haven't really bothered considering VoIP service as broadband up here is finiky enough.
Why not just buy a color laser? They are fairly cheap these days. I have a color laser, and a sprinkling of B&W lasers. I pretty much only use the color laser. When I have the need to do pure B&W, I use the older lasers, but in general I forget t change which printer it prints to.
You know, it's funny you mention this, as I've always built my boxen since my Tandy 1000SL. Recently I've grown tired of the tinkering, and picked up a few broken Powerbook G4s (667) from a friend. Got one good one working out of all the parts, and have been using OSX ever since. It's only been 2 weeks, but it's been nice. My PCs haven't been touched in that time, as I pulled their data off and it all resides on the Mac. Zippy considering it's speed.
I do not understand why the whole banking thing is always listed. I have never been to a bank (I have accounts at 3) where I couldn't log into their site. It's not like I use linux- I use BeOS, ZETA, or eComStation. So I don't see it as an argument, esp since I'm not even on any cutting edge that linux or windows would be on.
Of course that also means changing the way MPG is calculated, as the current way doesn't yeild real worsd figures. All these hybrids are crap. Just cars with more alternators. And let's think about POST-manufacture. These new cars are fine for gas, but what about the landfill? They sure aren't doing well recycling. At least my old 1974 will rot away nicely. Plastic cars? Never gonna rot nicely. New car in an accident? No problem, get another. But where does that crushed car go? Noone can unding the panels. *IF* they melt it down (not likely) it'll produce toxins that'll go into the air. All for the sake of fuel though! All they need to do is bring back the build materials of the old cars and put newer engines in them. I think a complete redesign is neede. Not just some damn fuel economy.
If you can find one anywhere, I'd get the person a touchstream. It's well worth the money imho, as I have never had pain while using it. They are VERY expensive now, but not as expensive as surgery. The company is not around anymore, so eBay is about your only choice. btw, it's both a keyboard and a mouse in the same surface.
I can already resize windows by pulling them apart. Man I wish Fingerworks woulda gotten somewhere instead of "bought out" Then maybe more would understand this is old tech that was hidden from the populace!
Actually, ODF helped me land my job. One of the "not required" requirements was to know alternate software such as OpenOffice, and I was the only one who sent in my resume and cover in openoffice format. Noone else did. Then to top it off, I took my laptop with me, and it was running linux.
My Os/2 Warp 3, 4 and eCom systems are all on the net. Warp 3 is what, from '94 and Warp 4 from '96. I'd throw them on the net any day of the week over any MS product!
The Mac version is actually going to hell, the OS/2 version is already there. We get one release, M$ buys it up and no more. Like anything that still reminds them of OS/2 disappears right quick.
My name, and the names of my two sons are on a spacecraft as we speak, that is hurtling toward the outer reaches of our solar system. I wouldn't say we contributed much, but they do like to track the progress of said craft. Thecraft won't reach it's inteded target for some time now, but I hope my children can see it when they are parents themselves.
The fact is there are ways to do it. OS/2 has been doing this for ages. It's called making another damn partition to become more flexible. Even XOSL lets you do this. Use the bootloader to hand it off to a real section of drive that can DO something. ie. make it flexible to recover from something such as this. We can afford to use another primary partition when the bootloader is strapped for space. Good god, you lose 10 MB of HD. With today's capacities, that ain't squat.
No way! Airwolf would kick Blue Thunder's ass cuz they'd be too distracted watching the pretty ladies through the window in silent mode, and Airwolf would knock em out fo the sky! Then they'd land, girl would emerge from home, String would say Blue Thunder was peeping on her, and he'd get the girl. Easy.

I still have about 2,000 of these in my storage unit. I should sell them. Or donate them.

And if you look at where my mom and dad live in Montana, it's 5/sq mile. Dogs outnumber the people.

Will they be releasing a version for the AlphaStation? I have this nice machine here and would like to run that on it...
http://www3.kingdomofloathing.com/login.php You know it is...
XOSL also did this using a fat partition, and it was freely available. This is an option for many folks.
;-) Oh yeah, got any cool ibm or os/2 swag you wanna get rid of?
Doesn't everyone own a copy of OS/2?

Got any job openings for OS/2 techs? :-D
