This will probably be modded down as troll, but here goes... What happens when there is a significant amount of solar panels on the earth absorbing energy and turning it into electricity, robbing the earth from that same energy that used to reach the ground?
I know exactly the story of which you speak. It is detailed in the book, "As Nature Made Him". The man's penis was badly mangled during a circumcision accident. The parents eventually ran into Dr. Money, who convinced them to give the child a sex change operation. You see, Dr. Money had the idea that is was nurture, not nature, that determined gender and sexual preferences and this little boy had a twin brother. So for him, this was the 'perfect' experiment.
Too bad it didn't work out for the kid. 'She' knew that she was a boy. She knew something was wrong. When she finally did learn of what had happened, she eventually went through sex reassignment surgery AGAIN. Really screwed this kid up.
It's a pretty interesting (and tragic) story. Recommended reading for those interested in gender/sex/psychological topics.
When I entered college I was started on C/C++. I learned a lot about memory management, pointers, low level system calls, using system libraries, etc. Two years into college they changed everything over to Java.
God damn, what a difference.
To this day I am happy that I was able to have those two years of C, letting me get close to the guts of the OS, forcing me to think about what I was doing every step of the way. There is no question in my mind that it made me a better programmer in general, regardless of the language.
I feel sorry for the people that start - then never leave - a much higher level language such as Java.
I bet your parents weren't capable of putting a sniffer on the network and recording all of your traffic, either.
You, on the other hand......and don't give me crap about "kids have a right to privacy." They don't, especially when it comes to communication with strangers.
If you enjoy good beer (as I do) and are concerned about the price, you may want to consider making it yourself. It is very easy to make good quality beer at home and you can grow your own hops if you want. Starter kits that come with everything you need run anywhere from $60 to $100, depending on location and what is included. After that, a 5 gallon batch will run you from $15-$25, depending on what you are making. Not a bad deal at all considering the quality of the product that you can produce with very little training. This is a non-story. This is some guy who has a web log. What real political influence does he have? There are thousands of people who propose ending world hunger and poverty, too.
When somebody in power pushes forth a recommendation like this then let me know. Good luck battling the lobbyists.
The reality is that, in the current business environment, it is better for your career to be mildly competent but in plain sight that extremely competent but hidden at home.
This is true. Managers tend to overlook those who telecommute full time, even if they do a great job.
Personally, I have the best of both worlds, in a sense. I work from home three days out of the week, which means that two days are spent in the office. My most productive days are those working at home - there is LESS of a distraction there because of co-workers and consequently I get more done.
I would like to see more privacy involved in the WHOIS database. I've been the target of not only marketing garbage, but also some threatening letters. That isn't fun at all.
Luckily, some companies will 'obsfucate' the WHOIS information to an extent, by offering a contact address to the company that will forward mail to you. You still get the mail, it just gets shuffled around a bit so that the sender doesn't see your real address. They do the same with email addresses, setting up a forward account. All of this, of course, for a fee.
I can understand why people would want contact information for domains - and I agree. It can be very useful and in some cases it is necessary for legal process. It is just too easy to abuse in many cases. I'm not sure what a good solution would be, though.
I am a big fan of Harmotion, which is a PvP 2D shooter. It is free-as-in-beer to download and play. The game is in Beta with upgrades being released on a very regular basis.
Two things of note: On Vista, you must run the game with administrator access; otherwise the auto-update will not work (all you will get is an exit to desktop with no notice).
Secondly, even if you have a really nice gaming rig, I would recommend low graphics mode. High graphics mode can really lag your machine down, especially late in the game. Low graphics mode still looks great so no big deal.
The team is accepting donations; if you like the product I'm sure they'd enjoy a little token of appreciation. I put my money where my mouth is here, I've donated.
I own this book and it is a fascinating read. Not only does it describe homosexual coupling, but it also covers many instances of family building. An example of this are two male lions who would take lion cubs from other pride and raise them. This book is, afaic, definitive proof that homosexual behavior is natural. This implies that it is a genetic trait - it generally isn't going to be learned behavior in these circumstances - which implies that it is not a choice.
I'll let you draw your own conclusions about it being 'good' or 'bad'.
I've also always been a proponent of free will for animals. I don't see why my dog, for example, would have no free will but a two year old child does. Both think and both can make decisions and weigh consequences.
His product is more than just a database app. It is also a form builder on top of that and some other things, so that you can easily and rapidly build data driven applications without the need of advanced programming knowledge. If his application lives up to its promises then that would be great.
The screen shots look nice, and it is comforting to know that it has been in active use in a production environment for over two years - and, according to the site, it works on Windows and OSX as well.
On a personal note, I'm disappointed that it is written in Perl and the author thinks that Python has some "very strange ideas" such as "everything is an object" (OO languages aren't strange anymore). Makes me scared of what the code looks like underneath, but honestly, if it works and works WELL than I don't really care unless I have to dig in and change something. (o:
I'd say that's partially a reflection of the unwillingness of workers to ask for (demand?) what they're worth. Labor is a business transaction, you shouldn't hate your business partners or let them treat you 'unfairly'. Get a good idea if what you should be paid, ask for it, and leave if you don't get it.
I work a salaried job. I was not happy with my compensation at all. So, I went job hunting. I found another company that was willing to pay me $20k more than what I was getting. So, I took this offer and went to my current company. I told them, "This isn't a personal thing and I like working here (which is a lie, but I've hated working for every company I've been at, so...), but this is a lot of money and I would be stupid to walk away from this offer."
I was given a counter offer. My current company matched the salary AND I get to work from home three days a week. Amazingly, I get more done now than I did before - when I'm not at the office I have far fewer interruptions.
Of course, this won't work for all people. I'm good at what I do and I am valuable to the company. Be honest with yourself - about your performance, your rapport with co-workers, everything - before you ask for anything significant. I've seen other people try this and they end up getting fired. Be careful; YMMV.
If "pirating" NBC shows is somehow affecting their sponsors
Long term, it will affect sponsors. Not right now; there are still large numbers of people watching these shows on their television sets. If the pirate activity becomes more severe, however, then sponsors will not be willing to pay as much for the advertising time. After all - their advertisements will be reaching less people. Less income for the content creator means less money available to produce content.

Your Vista install forgets about your printer.

Mine forgets its IP address at midnight - and doesn't get a new one until I do an 'ipconfig
Seriously - WTF?
I wish I had mod points to bump you back up, Moonpie. You argue these points much more eloquently than I ever could - I admire that.
I just wish that my co-workers could learn to spell and use decent grammar. Not would, could.

I second that.
My dad is pretty cool and all, but he never made a ceremony out of me beating old equipment to death.
