Despite all its warts, I honestly love Tribes 2 and am starting to get into T:V.
This isn't all that much of a surprise, VUG has done a variety of nasty things to the Tribes Community before. For example, recently they locked out all T2 users by flagging that there was an upgrade, but not actually posting a file for the updater to download. That caused the T2 client to go into an infinite loop. Fortunately, the community provided a command line work around. There have been about half a dozen BS stunts like this.
The best thing that could happen is for VUG's sites be get/.'ed.
If they do not find a way to make money, (i.e. outlaw PVRs, pass laws against skipping commercials, find alternate revenue stream, etc.) they will die.
There's another way they can survive. In the past, a fish that was having trouble surviving in water crawled up on land and learned to breath air instead of water. That's kinda what needs to happen here, they need another oxygen source, not an artificial way to keep their current source. Because we (the people) are gonna take away their current source one way or another.
Good point here. It's important to not confuse repoting with entertainment. REPORTING NO LONGER EXISTS. In our media, everything is viewed as entertainment and must therefore pay its own way through advertising.
Expecting usable information from entertainment is denying the reality of our media.
"travel independently between stations",
"cheap to install
"cost efficient per passenger mile"
"much more flexible than traditional mass transit"
Gauranteed to never be implemented anywhere
This problem has been plaguing consumers for decades.
The Consumer Electronics companies (you know who you are) do NOT want you to mix and match components from different manufacturers. One way, albiet a disruptive way, to enforce this is to make components interact with each other poorly. Aside from a few standards they can't get away from (like S-Video, RCA jack and the like), they go out of their way to make your life miserable.
the original quote is from John Glenn, when he was asked what it felt like sitting atop the rocket, ready to launch:
"I felt about as good as anybody would, sitting in a capsule on top of a rocket that were both built by the lowest bidder." (Senator John Glenn, Colonel USMC, Retired)

To get a hint about how this would go over with the copyright owners, watch the fight in Great Britain over the expiration of the copyright on the classic "That's All Right" by Elvis. It's due to enter the public domain in January and the legal dogs have been set out.
Fiat, Lancia and Alfa are related in much the the same way Chevy, Pontiac and Buick are related.
During a lovely driving vacation in Italy in the mid-90's (5,600KM+), we rented a nice Lancia sedan. Everwhere we went, we saw Fiats and Alfas with the same body (presumably different engines and trim levels).
So, if a Fiat has a problem, it's all too likely that the Lancia and Alfa version will too.
Very right, AVSForum is the right place to do the research. Be prepared, however, for information overload, the site is very heavily visited and has a HUGE history.
Reseach aside, if you buy a $300 projector, you can expect to get a $300 image.
At what point will they (you know, the bit THEY) introduce a flag that prevents turning off the receiver and display. (some SciFi I once read had TV sets where an off button was an extra cost option.)

And no one cares that it was first, or that it was mispelled.

VERY well thought out, and VERY scary.
I, for one, fear our new Sony-based overlords . . .
between different football games and different baseball games, it's between football games and baseball games, etc.
Actually what Apple is doing is making this guy famous, useful stuff when looking for a job after college.

is dual tuner TiVo's. That way, you could record and/or watch both shows, regardless of the start/stop time BS the networks throw at their customers.
Added bonus: Record one show while watching another with full TiVo capabilities.

Actually, these incremental increases in the "intelligence" of our machines seem much more likely than a sudden leap to sentience (think SkyNet).
AND, much easier to integrate into our daily lives.
AND, less painful.
When there's a bounty on the advertisers who use the spammers, then we'll see a reduction in spam
