I thought all this talk of 'The War On Terror' and talk of 'The Enemy' was generally regarded as a joke nowadays... Do some people actually take this shit seriously anymore?
You just mentioned 5 different choices that a user has to make if he wants to try out Linux. It's funny the way people slag of Windows for having 5 'editions' of Vista but when there are at least 5 distributions of Linux to choose from, people say that it's great 'cause choice is good...
At least with the versions of Vista, you know that, the more you pay, the more features you get. With Linux, distros seem to be more or less the same... It all comes down to personal preference.
Disclaimer: Before people start saying that I'm a Windows elitist or whatever, I use Ubuntu at home and in work. I just find it amusing that people to complete u-turns in their logic, just to support their ideals.
At home I don't bother with search. I find my music by searching in Rhythmbox and all my other stuff is easy to find 'cause I organise it well. In work though, Beagle has saved me loads of time. I've got LOADS of files on my computer. If I'm searching for a bit of code or for some presentation or whatever I've downloaded, I can usually find it in a few seconds with Beagle. There's not a chance I'd be able to find it without a search app.
Apparently the Cuban health care and education systems are amongst the best in the world and are available to all Cubans. Most of Cuba's hardships seem to come from the trade embargoes enforced by the US.
And I haven't been able to watch a movie on it yet.
Use easyubuntu (I think it's a package in multiverse, failing that google it). It works pretty well to get stuff like flash plugin and multimedia stuff working. Also, the Ubuntu Guide is pretty good as far as documentation goes.
A few weeks ago my windows install here in work crapped itself and I thought I might as well give Ubuntu a go. It's great! Much faster and I've my system set up exactly the way I want it to. Having said that though, if I had the choice, I'd use a Mac. That's what I use at home...
And don't forget the Russians. They helped win the war too. The guy's either a troll or a moron. Either way he's no worth having these things explained to him.
I started reading your comment, thinking "This guy watches too much Fox News" but you're right. The real issue here is that these advertisements were put up without seeking permission. If something's put up that was not permitted then who knows what it is. I think I (and most Slashdotters) have jumped to the wrong conclusion here.
Why would so many people be posting about Vista when it hasn't even been released yet? They stink of marketing speak too. You just know that MS and Apple are going to have people from their companies, supporting their OS...
Well I'm eating LOADS of protein now. I'm drinking a diet protein shake in the morning and evening which amounts to 120 grammes of protein a day and then I eat a meal with a big helping of tuna/egg whites/chicken. I've read that doing cardio after weights helps you burn fat because you've already used up your carbohydrate stores from doing the weights so the cardio is burning fat.
I know, I should probably do weights 3 times a week and cardio at least 2 times on my rest days but trying to fit in a good hour and a half session 3 times a week can be hard enough. I don't just work and train:)
Maybe I will just keep to the weights and drink my protein shake directly after lifting...
Actually, losing weight is incredibly hard. All my life, I've always been a bit overweight. Up till about last July I was about 20lbs overweight. I was gaining a bit more weight and I had a bit of a gut. Since then I've joined the gym. I work up a big sweat (at least 20 minutes full on cardio after about 50 minutes lifting weights) 3 times a week, I've cut down a lot of eating. I generally would only eat a burger and drink beer at the weekends. I am much much more fitter now than I used to be. My skin is clearer and I'm now starting to get some shape in my shoulders and arms and back but I've still got a bit of a gut. It's nowhere near where it used to be but I've still got a bit of work to do before I can confidently claim that I've no love handles. My target is late March. Now, I wasn't much overweight and it's taking nearly a year to get in shape.
Just saying, it is quite hard to lose body fat and extremely easy to gain it.
I was really making my point because of what one of my lecturers told me in University (I studied linguistics as part of my course). I just used dictionary.com as a reference to back up my view point. I usually don't try to use dictionaries as references for the reasons you stated above.
Heh, reminds me of this argument I had with someone about communism. He stated that communism was purely a way of running the economy of a country and had nothing to do with democracy. He gave a dictionary definition as his only reference. I, having read The Communist Manifesto and numerous other writings on the subject went on to argue that the whole point of communism was for everyone to have an equal say. The economic part was to enforce this idea. I gave lots of references about the theories of Karl Marx and other communists and he just kept on giving me the same dictionary definition...
Actually, the ability to pick up another language has lots to do with age and very little to do with education or wealth. The best time to learn lots of languages is when you're an infant. Your brain is maturing and learning how to use the articulatory muscles, learning vocabulary and learning how to process audio. If your brain learns language with more than one language, it can adapt to more languages easier later on in life. These 'well-off Americans' that you mention probably grew up with just English. To their brains, language is English so trying to learn a different language requires a bit of acrobatics from their brains. Compared to some Swiss kid whose brain thinks of language as French and English and German and Italian, their brains are much more limber and they'd find it much easier to pick up, say, Spanish later in life.
According to dictionary.com, the definition of bilingual is:
able to speak two languages with the facility of a native speaker
That means that you have two native languages. My native language is English. I learned Irish in school and German in school and University but I'm not bilingual (or multilingual). In my Uni class, there was a girl who was bilingual because she learned Irish and English as native languages, i.e. as she was learning language as a child, she learned both Irish and English.
So, acquiring another language after learning language as an infant does not make you bilingual. As a side note, bilinguals are supposed to find it much easier to pick up extra languages than people who have only been exposed to one language whilst growing up.
With your line of reasoning, we can't decide for a 14 year old if he is responsible enough to drink a bottle of vodka. Minors can be irresponsible and immature. It's up to us to look after them and make sure they don't do something silly that they may regret (or may not even live to regret) for the rest of their lives.
Sure there are people in the world that are over 18 and are still not mature enough to vote, drink, drive or whatever and similarly there are probably lots of 16 year olds that could drink, drive and vote responsibly but we still need to protect minors from themselves and adults. It is a bit of a grey area and there are many ludicrous examples where the law is misused but not having anything in place to protect minors is asking for (more) trouble.
In the middle of the night you'll often see some of the janitors enjoying a game of pool between emptying garbage cans.
You've been in work in the middle of the night? There's the catch. You work for a 'good company' and they work your ass off. There's always a catch. 'Good companies' know people will work for them because of their name and they take full advantage. Some companies like Google and Accenture work you to the bone. Other companies, like the one I'm in, pay well bellow the average salary for the industry.
Every company claims to promote those values. My company's 'values' are identical to Starbucks except you have to replace coffee with computer or something.
I too find it ironic that the English bitch so much about the US being a dominant super power when Great Britain used to be a much more dominating and way more savage super power than the US is.
Show me a post from someone who moans about the US, but supports the way Britain used to behave.
It's true that no one is saying that what they did was right but there is a noticeable silence from the Brits about anything they did in Ireland. They remember the IRA bombings alright but when it comes to their own actions, it's as if it never happened.
The US is reacting to terrorism in a frighteningly similar manner to the way the Brits reacted to the struggle by nationalists in Ireland.
In what way? What countries did we invade?
They didn't go and use the IRA as an excuse to invade unrelated countries but they did a lot of other stuff. The English Government sent in paratroopers to police the streets. Innocent people were wrongly imprisoned, tortured and murdered. A lot of similar stuff went on up the north as went on down here in Ireland when the Black 'n' Tans were sent to quash the Irish war for independence. The SAS coluded with unionist paramilitaries in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.
I think the British Government is much more similar to the US Government than a lot of Brits would like to admit.

I've been to the UK a good few times and each time, I've been harassed by Airport security and police. Sometimes they made it blatantly obvious that they were harassing me because I'm Irish. Anyone I know that's ever been to England has also received similar hospitality.
The US is reacting to terrorism in a frighteningly similar manner to the way the Brits reacted to the struggle by nationalists in Ireland.
I like to quote Bill Hicks in saying that all Governments are liars and murderers. There's no point in trying to turn this into some kind of US vs. Europe thing or even West vs. East thing. I'm sure if Ireland ever became a world super power (don't laugh), our Government would also be guilty of committing international terrorism.
Yup. I HATE ads. So annoying. I try to avoid them as much as possible. I usually download my favourite shows with bit torrent and when I go to the cinema, I go in about 15 minutes after the start time. It can feel like a bit of an effort sometimes but I really hate sitting through ads.

Surely there are better reasons not to watch Tom Cruise films... Except Top Gun. That's a classic.
You mean Linux lets you install software now?!?! Wow, maybe this really is the year for Linux on the desktop...

Microsoft: "Well, what if we give you a nicer looking start menu too?"
