I suppose success or victory is a subjective term. We need to know the motivations for invading Iraq, then we can know if and how the US operations in Iraq will succeed. If it was to remove Saddam, the US have succeeded. If it was to find WMD, they failed because there were no WMD to find in the first place. If it was to stabilize the middle east and introduce democracy into Iraq, they've failed and will never succeed. If it was to get their hands on the oil, they've succeeded.
Atheism and Islam are both beliefs. By your logic, being of the muslin faith predisposes one to certain behaviours. Atheism is a different belief but it still is a belief. Therefore, being an atheist predisposes one to certain behaviours.
Well in my office there's a guy who gets paid to work on the Linux kernel and there's another one who works on Dojo. There are probably others scattered around that work on OS projects.
Well, my point is that projects like Apache aren't completely programmed by people doing it in their spare time as a hobby. Some of them actually get paid to contribute to the projects as a full time job.
Yeah but the summary refers to two bugs, a bug announced last week which is a DOS bug and a bug announced this week which isn't. The title says that there are more than one DOS bugs in Firefox. I presumed that the bug announced this week was also a DOS bug but it isn't. Tis a but confusing. It looks like Slashdot's reporting on the week-old bug.
The title reads " Another Denial of Service Bug Found in Firefox 2" but the summary says "... the bug cannot be exploited to run arbitrary code on a PC running Firefox 2, the representative said. This flaw in the JavaScript Range object is different from the denial-of-service vulnerability in Firefox 2 that was confirmed by Mozilla last week."
So which do I trust? There's no way in hell I'm gonna actually read the article!
True, propaganda has such a negative connotation. Propaganda is defined as "the organized circulation by a political group, etc of doctrine, information, misinformation, rumour or opinion, intended to influence public feeling, raise public awareness, bring about reform, etc.". So, given that definition, anything communicated publicly by the Government is propaganda.
Yeah, I'm from Ireland but I go to Germany lots. I lived there for a year when I was in college. To me it feels like home away from home. The Germans sure know how to live. Great health service, public transport is a dream (both of these are complete nightmares in Ireland), everything's cheap enough (compared to Dublin anyway), great beer, some great food (kebabs, sausage etc.) beautiful women (they look after themselves!).
In fact everything in Germany is much better than in Ireland except for one thing. The people. Don't get me wrong. I think the Germans are great but when living there for a while, I start to really miss the friendliness of the Irish and also the pubs are great. I like the way Dublin's crammed full of people. It's really alive.
I suppose the grass is always greener on the other side but that other cliché, "There's no place like home" is also true.
I feel your pain. While I might not have invented the internets or whatever, I have a similar story.
Early this year I was finishing up my degree and looking for a graduate job. Since I was specialising in Information Retrieval, I was especially interested in getting my foot in the door at google and then hopefully one day getting to work on something relating to my degree.
I applied for any IT related job I could find on their site. Eventually I got a reply and they made me fill out some worksheet. I was a little puzzeled because the questions on the sheet were very basic. Someone with no knowledge of computers would be able to google each answer in a minute or so. When I gave back the sheet, I asked which job I was being selected for. It turned out that they were in the process of hiring me for a call centre job!
Anyway, I ended up getting an actual IT graduate programming job with a 'boring' IT company. The whole Google mystique is ridiculous. It's just another IT company at the end of the day. I wouldn't be rushing back there with my CV any time soon.
Well, the great thing about Web2.0 is the fact that you can have a nicer (looking, more interactive etc.) web site by using Javascript and CSS and not Java or flash or any other non-free technology. This means that a site like GMail works on more than one browser and more than one OS. Hopefully this will mean that no site will depend on you using IE to view it.
When I used to work in a call centre as a student, I used a cool little trick. I'd say something like "OK, what you need to do is..." and then cut them off! Genius! Why haven't more people thought of this?
It's like Instant Messaging. Jabber is clearly the superior standard on nearly every axis. But everyone you know is on AIM or Messenger. So you use the service that your friends are on, because the people on the service are the largest feature provided.
That's probably where Google has been really smart. Maybe they realised this fact and that's why they integrated gchat into gmail. Lost of people have gmail accounts but they probably never used gchat until it was integrated into gmail.
I hear ya buddy. It was just the other day when I went to see a film. 10 minutes after the time it was supposed to start, they were still showing ads. I remember when I was younger (maybe 10 years ago?) when there were no ads at all before a movie. There were trailers which are kinds of ads but they're much more bearable than watching shitty ads that are on tv.
Ads really piss me off. So much so that I can't stand to watch TV anymore. I download TV episodes illegally now.
In work, my main desktop machine has 2 2.7GHz Xeon CPUs and 2GB of RAM and it crawls. It runs Lotus Notes, Firefox and Eclipse. I know that this machine should be fast as fuck but it's a pain to use. This is running XP. I hope that when I install Linux on it, it runs at an acceptable speed.
I dunno if this has anything to do with your comment or this news item. It's 2:16am here, I've been drinking some weird Polish vodka and I feel the need to reach out.
I think it's a mistake to think that it's your fault if you're not fitting in with a certain group. I've read this opinion lots on this page. You might not fit in because you just don't click with the others. That's fine. We're all different and there's no law that says that you have to be the best of friends with everyone you encounter. On the other hand, if you're open and friendly to a group of people you work with and they don't include you in social stuff or even things like going to lunch then they're being rude. Fuck 'em.
Woah, this comment is even more retarded than your first one.

She'd be my number one!

He'd get my vote anyway!

There are probably more of these "Standard slashdot responses" posts than the standard slashdot responses.

ipod sharing?!?! Yeah, 'cause people never did this with Discmen...
You'd swear that iPods were the first ever personal music players

What about "paudcast"?
...with getting a free xbox!
Hah. Chill dude. I was only joking. Sheesh .. who'd have thought that Mac fans could be so tetchy...
Nah, backup will be only possible on the innovative new version of Mac OS X.
