    well many of the hishers dont hack accounts with automated tools so they have your account details and then they go enter them manually and put in the graphical challenge result themselves so they can do what they want from there.

    Also most of these graphical challenges are still a limited number of preset images that are simply cycled around so its easy to detect which is which by file hashes and things like that. Not many sites generate their own live graphical challenge images.

    Let me be one of the first to say this is absolutely sickening. Boy scouts are about honor and doing what is right and about self reliance and about all other good things like that. Not about serving commercial interests.

    What next they have a McDonalds Merit Badge given to the kids who can eat a quarter pounder a day all week for supporting a good old american company? Well it means the same thing.

    But theproblem is these are students and they have work to do. by pulling their plug you are not allowing them to get the work done that they are I presume there to do. So thats not an option. What you have to do is look for a better firewall for the network so it doesnt allow any virii in in the first place.

    Also, spread some routers out in the network that can actively block virii attacks. That way you are restricted to only part of the network causing problems and problems are kept within the source, or close to it

    flash memory like this in a hard drive is a gimmick, I think samsung are hoping nobody realises how few the write times are on flash memory, so you'll need to regularly replace the limited write time flash memory when it's worn out fairly often

    So what happens when trying to detect when the flash memory has been written to too many times? afaik this isn't easily done, so you end up dumping broken data to the disk until you notice "whooops my spreadsheet suddenly doesn't work that I need in 30 minutes or the boss will have my ass".

    Sure, Apple could be doing more, but they're not violating anything.

    The thing is free software is all about freedom. freedom to make and change and do all that. if apple are purposely making it hard to understand the source which they are, by making changes and not posting revisions, then they are impingeing upon the freedoms of the original authors and anybody else who wants to look at the code.

    Its all about freedom not just sticking to the letter of a license.

    Announcing that Safari passes the Acid2 test has raised some voices in the KDE world. Apple, they say, isn't playing friendly. They don't provide a CVS history, just the modified files where nobody can understand how and when things have changed. It's quite likely that KHTML developers will have to write their own code to pass the acid2 test.

    I think http://www.gpl-violations.org/ would really like to hear about this. Apple have been a bit too litigation-happy lately, it'll be nice to see them have to eat some of their own crows.

    yes we only send material to the subscribers of web sites belonging to our clients (they are chiefly pharmacies) and are all opt in.

    As an advertiser not to get lumped in with the same bucket as people who spam outright or spread malware and scam people. I am employed by a bulk email marketing business used by several medical companies and more often than not our services are presumed to be spam and blocked by users.

    This is unfortunate as I see it, as it was easier in the earlier days before spammers took over the internet and all forms of advertising were acceptable and just known as part of the internet. I dont think the tools to block adverts are doing good either. sometime somewhere someone has to pay for the sites you visit. Not accepting their advertising banners and emails is a form of rippinbg people off I thnk.

    I've always wondered this. why have duplication of a function in a server across every single server box when it could all be done in the environment. For example all servers get electricity from the server room and all servers get network from the server room so why not all servers get cooling from 10F cooling in the server room.

    It makes sense!

    Yes there have been many april fools jokes but this one is not one of them. I ran the program and it really cleaned my screen, and what I'm after is the technical side of this. How does a monitor talk to its phosphor to find out if its wrong?

    I want to know how this was able to anylyse anything in my monitor? I ran it for awhile and it didn't do anything, then suddenly 10 minutes later it's like its wiping large amounts of dust off the screen. It's made a really good difference to the screen.

    Is this permanent or something I will have to run often? its not going to shorten the monitor life is it? I have a CRT.

    they are something people have come to rely on. businesses too. including government departments and other service industries.

    doesn't that leave google with a responsibility that doesn't stop at the end of your browser?

    what if your electricity company decided they don't like the way your electricity is being used and cut you off? and they were the ONLY ELECTRICITY SUPPLIER and you didn't have a contract with them?

    I think then you'd have something to complain about

    Exactly what "terms of service" did they sign to be bound by google?

    What right does google have to remove them when wordpress hasnt signed any agreement with google. I didnt sign an agreement with google to run my website "bound by some terms of service" so what right would they have to remove me if I am not bound by those terms?

    This stinks of attempting to extort wordpress to run the web the way google wants, google thinks they can do what they want.

    Well you can use gimp which has most of the features in photoshop. When it comes down to it unless you are working in some high end shop its all anybody needs.

    OK I have on my bookcase two books that I failed to return to a library many years ago. I have alreaddy paid the late fines and "fail to return" fines on them and all is closed between me and the library

    Are you saying I do not own these books? will I be arrested for trying to sell them on to someone else? Will I get the library police coming after me if I try to sell them? I don't think so.

    Is this really an arrest its legal to make? When signing up to library you agree if you dont return book you pay for it so you might borrow something from library worth $20 to library but find a buyer online who will pay $250 for it.

    Well library rules say you pay $20 to library so what is the problem? If youve paid for it you can do what you like with it the library shouldnt have any say over it then.

    This is like RIAA when they say they get to control how you use music when they sell it to you but still control what you can do with it, or so they think

    Then dont buy their music or software or whatever. They made it and they get to set a price. Nobody will force you to buy it. Maybe if you didnt buy it then they would get the idea.

    Obviously they are not charging outrageous prices if they are still selling.

    What I don't get is why so many slashdotters are AGAINST the use of IP law as it stands.

    It is the only thing that protects you when you write code and release it as GPL.

    Without it, anyone could steal your code and use it how they wish. Microsoft could make a proprietary Linux and sell it and market it to take over.

    It protects the work you do, and coming down harder on the people who work AGAINST IP just sounds counterproductive.

    Then, quite simply, for most people who just want email and browsing it's more than sufficient for them. Same goes for a lot of small businesses. They don't need multi-Gigahertz machines or recent OS licenses. They just need something that will run their word processors, spreadsheets, and print docs.

    Well my old lecturer once told me that you need 75MHZ for every task you do on a computer so add them up together and you will get the MHZ of a computer you need. So by his logic word processor and spreadsheet and printing and email would need 300MHZ. But less does it I think probably.

    Remember these operating systems work as well as they did when they were released so why change?

    Windows 95 or 3.11 doesn't suddenly lose features when they become 5 years old. the analogy to 'creaky' isn't flawed. operating systems don't wear out or 'break' over time they just get found exploits for or don't provide newer functionality that might be needed.

    But you can patch them and do workarounds for their security problems that keep them every bit as secure as anything else new out there (maybe even more so!!!) and if you don't need newer functionality but just to keep doing a job then why spend money needlessly on something that doesnt need to upgrade and still works?

    I bet there are many of completely secure Linux 2.0 and Windows 95 servers and desktops in use by business that will keep doing the job they are needed to for years to come, maybe longer.

    I bought some debian CDs. Can I do what I want with the code on those CDs? say... sell it to microsoft so they can incorporate any & all of it into their products?
