What would be more interesting would be if there was a claim that they were breaking AES encryption in real time. That would be of interest. As to why we have not seen them yet? What makes us so important? We are less than fleas on a bit of mud circling a single insignificant sun. Why would they bother even if they knew we were here? If they can build such things as massive dyson spheres and control huge amounts of space and dark matter they probably have other things much more interesting that us to look at.

It is kind of like the UFO question. Why would intelligent beings with technology that can reach other worlds and solar systems take any interest in our insignificant little planet? And if they did why would they choose to do things like mutilate cattle, make crop circles, and anal probe farmers in Iowa? If there were aliens visiting this world they would most likely simply land and announce themselves. At which point we would either try to kill them or find out that the want us as a source of food or pets. As such the question of intelligent alien civilizations visiting the earth is mute. It has not happened and most likely will not happen. Actually there is strong evidence that there is no intelligent life on Earth at all. Just watch the news and you can reach that conclusion.

  12. Replicators... on Giant Sheets Of Dark Matter Detected · · Score: 1

Just throwing this out there, what if the dark matter that we are just now finding ways to detect and evaluate is the result of a species or device that is converting all available matter and energy in the universe to something such as replicators? Maybe this is the way the universe ends. Similar to any number of science fiction books that predict nanobots will result in the earth becoming covered by a gray goo which is the the result of nanobot deconstructors and constructors turning all raw material into more nanobots. It is probably just a matter of time before our galaxy intersects with one of these dark matter structures and the replicators take hold on this world and all others in this galaxy.

Another possibility is that the dark matter is nothing more than massive dyson spheres which surround all the stars that should be seen but can not because advanced species have created structures to capture all the energy of the stars in their sectors. Again, bad for us when they intersect our galaxy since they will quickly consume all the raw materials in our solar system and galaxy.

  13. Adapt or die! on Alaskan Village Sues Over Global Warming · · Score: 1

Why do people continue to blame others for the bad things in life that happen to them? The only ones that will really benefit from such law suits are the lawyers. They will get 33% off the top and then all the fees they incurred to bring the lawsuit. The people they represent will get a small fraction of anything that is actually awarded.

And if they do win the law suit in the next 15 to 20 years what will the do then? Actually move to someplace else? Doubtful. People have a bad habit to cling to places and things long after they have become useless.

Climate change is going to happen, ignoring the discussion about it being man made or not, it will happen. People need to do what they did long before the lawyers and green peace got involved, adapt to the changes. In the past various warming and cooling periods forced people to migrate to different areas of the globe. Well guess what, they need to do that now, or find a way to live in the changed environment. If their traditional hunting and fishing is disrupted by the climate change then they need to find something else to hunt and fish. If nothing is available then they need to find a way to import what they need. If they don't have the jobs and money to do that then MOVE SOMEPLACE ELSE THAT HAS WHAT THEY NEED! It is not going to cost that much to move a family to a different location. Load up the dog sled and head south.

This also goes for those on the coast that get hit with hurricanes. (Funny that the last couple of hurricane seasons have been much quieter than predicted...) If you can't afford the insurance for the house you bought on the coast then sell it and move in land. DON'T EXPECT THE REST OF US TO PAY FOR YOUR BAD CHOICE!

  14. Re:Sweet! on EU Commissioner Proposes 95 year Copyright · · Score: 1

You should put this in terms that /. readers can understand. Copyright for songs is similar to copyright for programs. It takes time and sweat to create a good program. But once it is created it can be copied and used time and again with out any additional effort. The problem as I see it is that for some reason people want to use copyright to generate a perpetual cash cow. Copyright should be used to allow the original author to get the benefits of the effort. But we don't want the best programmer in the world to create a single program and then go retire. Let them get the benefits but make the copyright short enough so that they will go out and create another great master piece. IMHO copyright of 20 or 30 years should be more than enough to achieve the desired effect. If it continues as is they will extend copyright to infinite which eventually will suffocate the music and programming industry in law suits over who holds the copyright to that particular three lines of code that you happened to include in the next great program or the five notes that were used in that song. We can not live off of law suits. There must be new things created. And as most intelligent people realize most things are built on the work of others. A little from here a little from their, eventually someone puts a number of good ideas together and generates a master piece.

There was a short story I read many years ago that predicted this very thing. It got to the point that all the possible music combinations had been created and nothing new could be created without violating copyright. That is the day the music will die.

Oil companies would be mandated to assist with the conversion as well as automobile manufacturers to create vehicles in all classes trucks, buses, SUV, sedans, etc that run on fuel cells.

This would generate jobs as well as get the economy moving again.

I would also start the process of pulling all U.S. troops from overseas assignments. The only way U.S. troops would remain overseas is if the host country paid us for the protection. The extraction of troops from Iraq would be prefaced on getting the Iraqi military up to speed to handle their own internal issues.

There would be a brief foray into Pakistan to finally capture/confirm dead Bin Laden. After that they would be on their own.

A set of security measures would be implemented to protect against ballistic missiles as well as scanning all cargo vessels interring out waters for nuclear or biological weapons.
