    Very interesting link. So these people want to eliminate the government, and replace it with an organization empowered to coerce people into following a set of rules.

    They have. The bailout of 2009 triggered a strong reaction on both the left and right. On the left, there was OWS, which never had coherent objectives, and has faded away as a movement. On the right, the Tea Party was formed, which today effectively controls the entire Federal government and dozens of state legislatures.

    The radical left here pretty much built their platform from scratch with a dash of FOSS from reddit, you're telling me there's no radical right than have the technical know how to do the same?

    So you are impressed that the left setup a sub-Reddit, but you think the right is incompetent because they are merely running the country?

    If they are doing different work, then they should have different titles, and different job descriptions.

    No. That is not a legitimate defense. It is illegal to systematically pay men and women differently for doing the same work. Unless Oracle was hiring professional negotiators, "ability to negotiate" is not related to the job and is not a legal justification for pay disparity.

    It is a civil suit. So they can subpoena that information during the discovery phase. In civil court there is no "presumption of innocence" nor any protection against self incrimination. So they can go in with no evidence, force Oracle to divulge data, and then use that data against them. This is they way civil law has worked for centuries. If Oracle kept proper records, and did not discriminate, they should be able to get the lawsuit dismissed. Otherwise, they should seek a settlement. You never want a jury trial in a case like this. Juries tend to include bitter careerless women who have had their dreams crushed by reality, and they will have little sympathy for a soulless corporation ... and no corporation is more soulless than Oracle.

    Elon said it would cost the same as an economy class ticket ... which means it would have to consume about the same amount of fuel per person as a conventional aircraft flight. Otherwise the cost couldn't be so low.

    There is plenty of evidence that this is not true. There are many, many examples of great scientists that were also great artists, musicians, and novelists.

    IQ and aptitude tests generally show a fairly strong correlation (about 0.5) between different areas of intelligence and ability. People that are good at math and logic, tend to also have strong vocabularies, reading comprehension, etc.

    currently, India is starting to lose employee count since it is no longer a "low cost" supplier.

    Bangalore and Mumbai are getting more expensive, but if you go north and east, there are another billion Indians who will work for less.

    Banking executives have certainly proven unethical and even illegal activities are worth the effort and risk.

    Maybe I am missing your point in making this comparison, but are you implying that hiring brown people instead of white people is unethical? Please explain.

    err.. in reality, companies demonstrate by their actions they have come to the opposite conclusion; outsourcing is the solution.

    This is not "outsourcing". The Indians working for IBM are employees.

    Why would that be a bad thing? Is there some benefit to having plenty of stupid ugly people?

    If the technology is mature and reliable, and someone wants to boost their child's IQ to 120, and edit their genes so they don't get severe acne, or an asymmetrical face, or a predisposition to depression, then I don't see any reason they shouldn't be allowed to do it.

    China is pushing forward, while America holds back. My daughter is a biotech major in college, and all the interesting internships are in China. She finally thanked me for forcing her to learn to read and write Chinese when she was in elementary school. Those skills are now opening up a lot of opportunities.

    By reading them. Are they are written in proper English? Do they actually describe what is good and bad about the product, rather than just saying "Five stars"?

    Also some sites like Airbnb don't post negative reviews.

    Wrong. I host on Airbnb, and I absolutely guarantee you that they post negative reviews, even when they are totally unjustified, such as a one star rating because the traffic from the airport was worse than expected.

    Nonsense. Retail jobs are unproductive and create no additional goods or services. The elimination of these jobs is good for the economy, since it frees up labor for productive work. Rising productivity not only raises living standards, it is the only thing that raises living standards. The common belief that it is a "bad thing" is ridiculous.

    Go visit a 3rd world country. You will see thousands of people sitting behind tables, or with some goods laid out on a blanket by the side of the road. In poor countries, far more people work in dead end retail jobs. So why aren't they rich if they are working so many hours?

    Agreed. Why would I ever ask a store employee for a product recommendation? They aren't going to know more about the quality of the products just because they stock the shelf.

    I buy retail because:
    1. I need it now.
    2. I want something fresh (produce, dairy, bakery)
    3. Retail is cheaper for many common products.

    My local Walmart hires people that can barely speak English. One of their employees is in a wheelchair. Two of them appear to have Downs Syndrome. Yet Walmart gives these people meaningful employment, while keeping prices low. Win win. The dumbest thing they could do is raise prices so they can hire "smarter" employees.

    You also cannot be Vice President, and that is the only other example.
    There are no other differences. A naturalized citizen has all the other rights of a native born citizen.

    Intelligence agencies exist to spy on foreigners. Why is this news?

    1. It is not clear that only foreigners are targeted.
    2. It is not clear if this program is cost effective.

    The NSA is having difficulty coming up with any "success stories" that can be linked to this program. You might think that is because it is classified, so they don't want to disclose their successes, but that is not true. They can disclose information in closed door meetings of the oversight committee without compromising anything, but are still unable to do so. Secrecy can be used to protect national security, but it is used far more often to protect incompetence.

  23. Your logic is backwards. Big Data gives you the ability to do deep statistical analysis, and find subtle connections that you would miss if you only looked at "small data". This is the opposite of what you are saying.

    The first person to apply Big Data to retailing was a guy named Sam Walton, who had a shop in Bentonville, Arkansas. Contrary to your prediction, he didn't fail.

    People said the same about Tesla Autopilot. Then it killed a few people. The world continued to turn, and Tesla owners continue to use Autopilot. People are tolerant of a few deaths if they can see that the overall system is generally safe.

    Nobody expects perfect safety from a flying taxi. If it is as safe as a normal taxi, then that is good enough.
