Are many people under 13 going to even get that much spam? I bet most of them will have e-mail addresses, but will only check them lke once a month or something. I doubt this will even end up doing anything.
I have the same thing with Linux. No swap usage. I feel like a wasted a gig of hard drive space with my swap partition. However, with Windows things seem very different. my laptop has 512MB of RAM right now, and is using 260MB of page file. I only have Thunderbird and Firefox open, and a few background services like BOINC. With my Linux machine, I normally would have Thunderbird and Firefox open, but also a terminal, xmms, emacs, and onnasionaly another program.
Compare that to all the money the government wastes funding crap that we don't need. Who knows how much is being lost because some idiot politician can't do a simple project? Everyone screws up at some point, but it seems like politicians do it a lot more.
I barely have time to game during most of the year. During the school year, I have maybe an hour a week or two if I'm really lucky to play games. Normally I would go for months without touching a video game just because I had better things to do. As long as they expect me to pay anything a month, I'm going to refuse.
If I spend that $15 doing something with my friends, I'm willing to bet that I will have ten times more fun with them than I will on some game. I'm not attacking the players, I just don't think its worth the money. If I had more time, maybe I'd consider it, but I don't. Until they make a game where I can go away for three months, come back, and still expect to have just as much fun as before, they're not going to get me interested. And it will have to have no monthly fees for me.
Still, anti-trust laws seme to create an evelution sequence for companies. Look at phone companies. When the government forced the one phone company to split up, companies began to buy each other out, merge, or just go out of business. Now, there are fewer and fewer major players. Eventually, they will keep going until there are just two, and one will eventually give in to the other, and we have a monopoly again! Something like this could happen if the government decided to act, but at least we would have a while before we had to worry about it again.
That is really for the average user. If you have a firewall set up, you should have no problems whatsoever. However, the average user might not have a router in their basement which also functions as a firewall. And the average user probably doesn't care about installing security software. If they're only using the computer less than 10 hours a week, why spend hours trying to figure it out or paying someone to do it?
Windows isn't very secure in its original state. But as soon as you take steps to secure it, you really don't have problems. Besides, I'm not going to complain how insecure it is. Because I can charge people money to secure their computers.
If you really want it to be, Windows can be secure. But not everyone cares, so there are plenty of people out there getting owned. I somewhat doubt that it happens that quickly, but it will happen at some point. Within the past two years, I have only had one machine fall to a virus, but there were many other factors that also were involved in that, and this computer was already acting up before hand, so I was kind of glad for a chance to reinstall everything.
Yes, I thought this when I read the original comments. When I first saw the article, I thought I might get a few laughs. But apparently, it is better to make fun of our own president, who is doing an awesome job IMO, instead of bashing ICANN. We have to remember Slashdot does tend to lean to the left. And people, if you have an opinion, share it in a better way. I want to hear why you don't like Bush, not "Bush is teh loser! LOL!!!". Please don't prove your an idiot.
I doubt most cell phones have the memory to even hold one song. My girlfriend's video phone only has 1MB of memory or so, but if a phone had an SD slot we could see some interesting stuff. I'm sure some phones could play whole songs, but not most. And they can probably already do it in Japan..
Your points are right on. When I play a game, I don't care about what hardware is in my console, I care about the game. Right now, i'm afraid to start thinking about buying one of the next-gen consoles, because I'm not sure any of them will be awesome right from the start. I'm going to wait a while and see which console has the most good titles.
And free online play also helps. I hate how Microsoft makes $50 per year from me right now so I can actually enjoy their games. Honestly, I hate the campaign for Halo 2, but the multiplayer makes up for it. I hate to pay $50 that could have been better spent so that I can actually enjoy it. I know Microsoft promised free play on weekends, but what about summer? I might just stick to my PC.
I know how you feel. Most people I know have phones that cost at least $150 with camera, ringtones, and all that other crap. It's cool for about five minutes, then you realize its pretty useless.
The ringtones just get annoying, especially the polyphonic ones. If they want to do good ringtones, they should give you a USB cable and let you mess around with your favorite song to get the coolest part of it. I still think it would be nice to hear some Pink Floyd when my friends call.
My phone is a basic Motorola phone. I don't even have a *gasp*color display. But it can make calls, and at leasts its durable. I killed my first one off within two weeks of getting it, and still don't know how I managed to do it, but my second one has lasted many falls. And it has a pretty good color display.
Come on guys, lets be realistic. It seems like 90% of the discussion regarding this article has been about forming a conspiray theory. We haven't ruled out any other causes, why don't we look at more normal possible causes first?
Same here near Atlanta. It takes them a while to solve such a basic problem too. It bothers me when I have to get up from playing CounterStrike because it won't work and is bugging everyone in my house. On average, it takes me 30 minutes with a tech before my connection gets restored.
Umm, if they would need this, wouldn't it be likely that they are facing death? If it helps them live just a little longer, I think that its benefits outweigh the risks, but then again, I'm not a doctor, and thats just my two cents.
A young man pulls up to a farm, and asks the farmer if he can have a sheep if he tells him the exact number of sheep he has. The farmer agrees, and the young man goes back to his car. He pulls out his laptop, gets an aerial image of the area, and uses an algorithm he wrote to determine the number of sheep in the area. He then returns to the farmer, and tells him the exact number of sheep.
The farmer responds, "If I tell you what your job is, will you give me the sheep back?" The man agrees.
The farmer says, "You must be a consultant. You came here without being asked, and with no idea what I was even doing. Give me back my dog!"
I'm already directing a lot of my friends with hotmail accounts to gmail. And they're all loving gmail. I say let Microsoft continue with their stupdity, other free e-mail services will enjoy the new customers!
Why is it news when someone whines about their product? I don't consider it news, just people not getting in touch of reality. If we ignore the whining, maybe it will stop, or at least people who don't care about it won't have to hear about it. Sorry if this seems like a flame, its just my two cents.
The only problem with Disk Druid, IMO, is that reiserfs is still not supported when creating a new partition. I keep a copy of Knoppix lying around for this very reason.
Yes, you can get a good desktop for cheaper. Refurb machines tend to make laptops come a bit closer to fair pricing. Last night, I bougt an HP OmniBook with a 1GHz Pentium 3-M processor, 256 MB of RAM, and a 20GB HD for $500. While it is still a little pricey, I managed to avoid lower end components. Is it better than my desktop? No. Is it good enough to perform my tasks? Yes. If you wanted to do video editing or whatever you do that takes so much processing power, would you look at buying a cheap machine?
The best advantage to a laptop is portability. Even with the heaviest laptops, I would still much rather lug one of those to my friends house versus my desktop machine. Have you ever tried to do that before? I'm just glad I don't have a CRT monitor anymore. And if your laptop ways less, then you can take it to Starbucks or work outside, which I think is a great thing.
Laptops have their advantages, but they come at a price. You may think that its too much to pay for portability, but it looks like most people think its a fair price.
I know exactly how this goes. Some homework can help, and it often helps me remember concepts. But when teachers go overboard, it doesn't do anything but waste time and frustrate us.
I had several teachers last year who loved doing homework. One of them didn't really teach us at all, and tried to use homework instead of actually teaching us. She gave us homework just about every night, even if we didn't learn anything in class!
It doesn't even have to be homework, it can be classwork too! I can't name how many times we were given busy work to help us "review". There isn't much that can be done beyond hiring better teachers.
For me, installing Slackware was easy. But trying to set up X was the frustrating part, so I just went to FC 3. If I had a more-supported video card, I am sure the issues wouldn't have been as big.
You know what this means? Those Japanese Seizure Robots are becoming a reality!

Can't Microsoft just send out their army of lawyers and sue them out of existence for something random?

It also means we can play Runescape...on our big screen TVs! What a great use of technology.

Its cracking you insensitive clod!
Q: How many hardware engineers does it take to change a lightbulb? A: None, it'll be fixed in software.
