    Wouldn't it be easier to buy a blu-ray player that has that ability? There are certain makes available in the U.S (I'm going to assume you're in the U.S.) that have hidden player settings menus to control BD region specification. It's not possible to get a true "region free" (it plays everything) player, you'll have to change the player whenever you go from discs from one region to another. But at a cost of $50-$100 it's affordable to buy it as a second BD player to set to your favorite secondary region that you have many titles from, and much cheaper than importing a normal player from the region you want.

    The camera diddled the image, maybe it was diddled even more before we actually saw it. Then we're all amazed that it doesn't look like the thing. But people have accidentally been taking pictures of things which don't look like things since time immemorial. They're called shitty pictures.

    This is what happens when publications fire their professional photographers and give their "reporters" (who skill-wise are glorified bloggers now) smartphones and tell them to take their own pictures, because that's much cheaper than hiring real pros. The sad part is they probably think this is all great. After all, they're getting a lot more page views over this stupid photo controversy than a properly taken picture of the dress would have attracted to their site.

    Always good to remember a venerability is a venerability, but a trojan is a trojan.

      - People buying legitimate blu-ray titles are not going to have this issue.
      - Even people downloading pirated content are not going to have this issue... as long as they are downloading just video files and not trying to pirate the entire disc with menus.

    And half those sort of "new generation" searchers won't know half the time if they are redirected to a phony site.

    Or if they are blocked from reaching the site they want by the search provider choosing to delist what they are looking for.

    Who needs an actual government internet filter when you can ask your good friends at the search providers to make the site "disappear" for a growing portion of the population.

    No, seriously.

    I know I've seen systems that use sensors you mount around the edge of a whiteboard and special markers to track where you are drawing and reproduce it electronically on remote monitors -- it's on a cheap system, but it's cheaper than flying people in airplanes all over the place.

    You could also just have the whiteboard person use a graphics tablet, and skip the big arm movements.

    One of the reason people developed for iOS first was the platform had users who on average had higher incomes and spent more money on apps. So if you were trying to develop an application to sell it was more likely to show a return. Also there is more piracy of apps on Android.

    Worse is some of them are selling their services as a "techie" to normal people.

    I talked to an auto parts store a couple weeks back replacing a POS PC and it couldn't get online, but the other machine in the store could, and they were calling us (the ISP) about the issue. They were both hardwired to a router (that was not supplied by us) and the store's third-party tech who installed the computer was there. He didn't know how to check an IP address and hadn't even looked at the router itself. He'd just connected the wires from the old computer they replaced to the new one and expected it to work.

    In fact, the Pi's CPU is used in set top boxes right now - I believe if you go to your favorite electronics retailer (online or off), pick up a Roku 2. The same CPU powering the Pi powers that. (Same amount of RAM, too I believe, and Ethernet.).

    Roku 2 doesn't have Ethernet.
    Only the Roku 3 does from the current generation, and it has a more powerful processor.

    While the NUCs are overkill for HTPC duty, the PIs are also not sufficiently there either. A PI just has problems keeping up with the user interface (XBMC).

    No, I don't think a NUC is overkill for HTPC. The only reason a Rpi works for HD is because of hardware acceleration for video playback. But throw it a file in a format that doesn't meet the qualifications for acceleration and pbbbbbt! So, no 10-bit h264 or HEVC, let alone if you want to do rendering of subtitles, filtering, or chroma upscaling to improve the picture quality of normal 4:2:0 video.

    While the width/depth of the NUC/Brix machines are great, I'd rather they make one with more vertical volume -- to allow for a larger and much quieter cooling solution. Like a cube form factor that's still smaller than a CoolerMaster Elite 110 case.

    I cannot even begin to count the number of commenters here who pushed HTML5 as the best way to end, once and for all, those incredibly invasive and annoying Flash ads.

    I remember what they were doing is pushing HTML5 as a way to deliver rich content that oftentimes was not supported on $favoriteOSSplatform due to reliance on proprietary plugins. HTML was supposed to help maintain the (original) spirit of the Internet as a platform-agnostic information source.

    They forgot that once they get access to the content, those same companies now also have a way of delivering marketing content to the audience.

    If you want fucking songs, there's always youporn and redtube although I wouldn't exactly call the audio "songs".

    Those sites both have categories for vintage porn -- which include a large number of full-length professionally produced porno films from the 60s to the 80s with music scores.

    Saturn beat Playstation to the market with 3D. Launch titles games like Virtua Cop and Virtua Figher.

    But those were Sega-published titles. As the AC said, there wasn't enough 3rd party content to make the platform that enticing to buyers.

    While it's true that many parents made piss poor decisions in life (like having children they cannot properly raise), it's irrelevant to this topic.

    That whooshing noise is you missing the point. The parents shouldn't have to work three jobs to put food on the table. Their absence in their children's lives is the result of the Haves screwing the Have-Nots on a living wage. Their kids don't have the guidance they need to help succeed in school, and can't compete in the real world -- which is already stacked against them when you have to have a $40,000 college diploma to get any decent job at all. Wonder if the three-job parents have money for their kids to go to college -- probably not. The whole thing is a cycle that makes it impossible for people to improve their situation, or their kids'.

    Looks like the Yosemite beta program was a roaring success. /sarcasm

    The final release of OSX 10.10 is considered one of the buggiest ever, and even after two maintenance updates there are still issues with wi-fi and Apple Mail, two things that are kinda important to get right the first time in today's Internet-heavy computing lifestyle.
