All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

I believe that just about sums it up. I think it's a fundamental flaw within our current culture which causes us to believe that all crimes perpetrated across racial barriers are hate crimes, unless perpetrated upon a white person.

Call me a bigot all you'd like, but the fact remains that if a white guy kills a black guy, it's automatically a hate crime. If a black guy kills a white guy, it's just murder. There's something fundamentally racist about raising the status of a man above another based solely on race.

Much of the racial tension that goes on within our culture nowadays is as a result of reverse racism. This racism is frequently perpetrated on us white people not by people of different race, but by ourselves. We've designed a society in which we are discriminating against ourselves. I think it's mostly as an apology for our long years of discriminating against other races. But it's bullshit, and it has to stop.

How many people would be up in arms about racism and discrimination if I were to offer up a $1000 whites-only college scholarship? Chances are that if you are one of those people, you're racist. It's okay for "minority only" scholarships to discriminate, but if there's a non-minority scholarship, it has to be open to everyone. Otherwise it's racial discrimination. Makes no sense to me.

I'm not sure if that's supportive of your argument, or whether or not I've contributed anything meaningful. Mostly I'm just fed up with people always playing the race card. I'm white, and I'm not allowed to play the race card. Moreover, I'm not racist, and I'm deeply offended whenever someone else implies that I am. I'm fed up with all the thinly-veiled racism and discrimination going on in this culture. It should have stopped in the seventies, and it damn well better stop now.

I dont particularly care for becoming Stouthoof the giant cow simply because I'm playing a video game which has the potential for that. But neither am I a completely retarded player just because I dont roleplay. Some people just play because it's a fun diversion from their real life. That doesnt mean, though, that they're all roleplaying their characters. There's a correlation between not roleplaying and being a crappy player and/or person that I think you're making which flat out doesnt exist.

My dad played Doom back when the Ultimate Doom collection came out. Whenever I show him a game, some of the most-asked questions are "can we go over there and kill that?" This is shortly followed by "no, dad. I need him alive. He's going to help me survive this part of the game." Mind you, he was about 49 when he first started watching my brother and me play games. He's 55 now, just to give you some sort of timeframe.

Just the other day I showed him MGS3. This, of course, sparked little discussions about guns and the technical aspects of gunfighting. He's a retired army Lt.C.

Amen to that. The only reason I go to Anime conventions is to buy J-Pop CDs and OSTs. And I never would have become interested in the music if I hadn't originally started downloading it via WinMX.

Last year when I was at Sakura-con, I bought an Ayumi Hamasaki CD after seeing one of her music videos at one of the dealer's booths. I cant read Japanese, so I'm usually reluctant to browse imports because I cant tell who I'm looking at. But I asked the person running the booth "*points at video* do you have any CDs by her?" And they fished through their collection.

That is how I want to buy CDs.

*listens to song* "Do you have any more of this?"

I have to say that if it wasn't for the internet and FM radio enabling me to listen to music that I otherwise would not have the opportunity to listen to, nor the will to buy, my artistic life(read life of exposure to art) would not be as rich as it is today.

When it comes to something as deep and inspiring as music can be, I do not relish the idea of going into a store having only listened to 30-seconds from a 60-minute album. I have bought CDs with one good song and 10 mediocre ones on them before. I am definately of the "try before you buy" frame of mind. The internet facilitates this method of consumerism.

A friend of mine, who works as a doctor for a medical company, once went to review some patient records that had been transferred into a computer from his original hard copy via scanner. When he went to review them, he found that, though the page was labled 1 of 4, there was only the first page of the record in the copy. The rest of the record had been lost in the transfer from hard copy to digital. Furthermore, said company no longer makes the paper records available to their doctors, so he couldnt go back to review the paper copy.

He also came up with the oh-so-useful Leibniz notation which (IMO) is far more useful for thinking of a rate of change than that silly f'(x) crap. Namely, he expressed the derivative as a ratio of two differential elements.

Newton's contribution to classical mechanics is huge. Hell, the guy has three laws named after him.

Yeah. The poster you're responding to took the case completely out of context when he cited it. Most likely, there were mitigating circumstances like the parent spanking the child more than once or leaving bruises or, in some other manner, physically damaging the child. Most spankings are not and should not be considered abusive. The purpose of a spanking is to cause physical pain to grab the child's attention in a serious emergency.

Like, if I caught my kid playing with matches I would most certainly spank them. But if I caught them playing WoW for too long, I would just disconnect their internet access. Spankings are a useful tool for parents.

However, laws are not a useful tool for parents. The best way for a parent to prevent their child from doing something is to model good behavior.

*snicker* My Nokia 3390 has this neat little ringtone where it beeps, waits 1.5 seconds, then beeps thrice with the center note a bit lower than its partners. It then doesnt do anything else. That's my favorite ringtone. It's so unobtrusive, IMHO, that I can use it in a library if I *must* have my phone on and be hearing it. The vibrating alert is actually louder than the ringtone. The best thing is the fact that I know that it's my phone ringing, and not somebody elses because I'm the only person I've ever met who tries to use an unobtrusive and quiet ringtone instead of the blaring noise most people favor.

And if you cant find a ringtone, see if you can find a composer function in your phone. Mine has one. All you need is three notes to be repeated in rapid succession followed by a bit of silence. Pretty simple.

Have you ever actually watched anything that you're talking about? That kind of action-oriented stuff is *everywhere*. Not just in Anime.

And while we're on the subject, there are plenty of *good* anime series that *arent* about action. Niea Under 7, Serial Experiments Lain, Twin Spica, and Windy Tales, just to name a few. They're all really great series. With the exception of Lain, they lack all of the action-over-drama and speed-over-character-developent stuff that you're bitching about.

Pull your head out of the sand and *look* for the stuff you're asking for. It's out there, both in live-action and animated forms, from all over the world. It just doesnt play in major movie theatres, because the trash that does play there panders to exactly what you're complaining about.

I really enjoyed the old disney cartoons. Doesnt somehow make japanese animation somehow more sucktastic that it doesnt follow the old vanilla consistancy that those shows had. They had mindless slapstick humor in them instead of mindless speed-high action.
