I always hoped these things would die:
1) yet another gimick to make money on a saturated industry
2) yet another proprietary sony standard
3) yet more trash. These things are even more disposable than dvd's. I would think the resale is low, and the life expectancy of the whole UMD standard was already low, apparently now they're good and dead.
After reaching 88 MPH, he left burn marks in the carpet, and somehow generated 1.21 gigawatts, which in turn, caused all the toilets to spin the other way, which in turn caused this story to smell like horseshit.
I still cannot stand that default ms typeface, Trebuchet/Verdana? maybe? For some reason, it just doesn't fit, even with anti-aliasing and everything, just plain goofy. There has to be at least one UI designer over there who needs to speak up on the sloppiness/consistency of their UI.
How many times have you needed to swap out something, like a video card, network card, modem (gasp!)? I'm sure quite a few slashdotters have had to quickly swap a video card in for testing your dad's/mom's/girlfriend's (gasp!) machine, and it's great in those instances to have built-in necessities to fall back on. Or next year, when you upgrade, you'll prolly take your fancy video card and stick it in your fancy new machine. You're gonna be very happy when you can just give your younger brother the old box without having to hunt down another video/nic/etc...
Is that the most un-holy, ugly-ass power button ever? Or just me... Other posts have pretty much covered this, but in these days of slick ipods, and anti-beige-box design, what are they thinking?
We'll see OSX on an intel platform by then... but then again, prolly not. Been discussed before, but wouldn't it sweet to see side-by-side comparisons, on the same hardware, etc, of MacOS and Windows?
I consistently got.281 (abouts there). Is there a limit? Isn't.25 about as fast as a normal person's reflexes can be (I think I remember that from driver's ed. or something)?
Man, I have just a little guilty hope of seeing Real's ass kicked in this showdown. Legal issues aside - after all these years of Real's shady business practices, screw 'em. If someone had released (and maybe they did) an alternate Real streaming server that was cheaper and could still play in Real's player back in the day, they'd be pissed too.
Eh, just blowing off steam, I know I'm preaching to the choir on this one.
Good point. Man WB really can't put out a good original movie can they? Yeah Harry Potter, but the books sold that, Troy was lackluster, and basically everything else was a failure. Hell, Sony got the comic book genre right with Spiderman, but for some reason WB just seems to fuck up all these 'sittin right on your plate' concepts. And for Batman, I hope it's not another Catwoman!
I've done my share of multimedia programming, and have used lingo in the past (the language used in Director/Shockwave). I absolutely hate it now, but for someone starting off, it's very easy, and provides instant gratification (like making things interactive, etc.). It's geared toward non-techies/programmers and basically reads like English. Otherwise, I'd agree with the rest of the posts and go for HTML. Then she can put her photos on the web.
My parents have at least 4 computers between them, so this subject comes up almost every week -
Hate to say it, but Win XP remote assistance is the best 'parent computer tool' ever. I also set the 'rents up with a linksys router, and I have web-admin turned on. Between the two, I can check and see what's wrong with their wireless configuration and see what they're messing up at the same time. Having control of the router also lets me open up a DMZ to allow remote assistance to work.
I think you need to add good 'ole Game Boy. My GBA will play my old tetris, GB color, and any of the new advance games. Nintendo did something right with the GBA, and I think backward compatibility is the way to go no matter what system you're introducing.

At least they aren't GPL spooning.
