First off, Intel has had 64-bit Pentium 4s for a couple of months now, their 6xx series. These are far from the Xeon and Itanium prices.
Secondly, Apple's timeline seems to suggest that they are going to be using Intel's new roadmap which consists of processors based on the Pentium M core, which is both higher IPC and lower power than any AMD chip.
Lastly, he's just an all-around moron.
Good effort though.
Even better, the line:
"Tom has a successful track record of improving the performance of public agencies," Taft said. "His tenure at ODJFS has demonstrated once again that he knows how to bring the best out of his employees."
"Entering the Sunday Times best-seller list within two weeks of publication, it rapidly reached number one, where it remained unchallenged throughout the summer. The book had already broken many records and indeed went on to break them all stay- ing on the list in Britain for a staggering 234 weeks, and notching up British sales in excess of 600,000 in hardback before Hawking's publisher Bantam decided to paperback the book in 1995." ^-- and that's in Britain only. Who knows how many more in the US.
I don't understand why a company with $4.8 billion (or $5.1 billion pre-$300mill hit) would wait this long to pay off the $300 million owed. Obviously the money is coming in hand over fist, so they would probably want to pay it off as soon as possible to please investors. Not much is more enticing than a company with billions of dollars in the bank and no debt as it means the company is being run in a 'correct' way.
"Based on the research that the McKinsey institute had carried out, Ms Farrell said conservatively, for every dollar invested in the offshore space, $0.58 was directly saved. This could be either redistributed to investors or customers."
I call BS. Unless I'm misunderstanding the above quote, she's saying that companies are saving 58% in moving offshore and that somehow we consumers are going to see the benefit of that. Companies like Nike and DKNY have been using sweatshops for years and yet I'm still forced to pay hundreds of dollars to parade about in their fabulous brands.
Step 1: Outsource all high-paid jobs to overseas companies and save 60% on your bottom-line.
Step 2: Realize that unemployed people can't afford your products on their Taco Bell wages.
Step 3: Lower your product prices by 60% so previously high-paid ex-employees can afford them, while at the same time reducing profit margins to what they were pre-outsourcing.
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit!
I'm a registered Republican so I'm all about big business. However, I'm only about big business when those big businesses actually hire Americans. What good is an American corporation who doesn't employ Americans and thus feed more money back into our own economy? If I'm going to overpay for products I should be at least supporting my neighbors.
I have this quad Intel server that sounds like a jet engine when it's powered on and has the drone of a nascar engine while it's running.. I like it. Reminds me that I have powerhouse machine.:)
maybe it's like those people who drive obnoxious SUVs.. overcompensation.
Imagine if someone wrote a useful worm that installed some/any free pop-up blocking software on their machine.. getting someone to install a pop-up blocking software is grief enough as it is, but if you have an automated worm scouring the net installing it you'd limit the amount of false positives that companies like Doubleclick thrive on: those that click on pop-up ads by accident, like while trying to close it.
I agree with the fellow who mentioned Zahn's trilogy.. unfortunately, however, it focuses on the characters from eps 4-6, which are now 25 years older than they were. (And in the case of a couple of them, full of psychiatric disorders)
I'm not sure where Lucas could go with 7-9, but if it's anywhere near 1-3 he should just stop while he's behind.

With both Windows CE for small applications and Windows XP Embedded for more demanding apps, Microsoft has been making a strong push for what's an extremely hot market. With everything getting smaller and smaller embedded OS's are going to be far more important.
It's not free but the developer tools for embedded Windows devices are extremely similar to those normal Windows, so developers have less of a hard time migrating.
Anyone notice the logo at the bottom? Looks like they're running some sort of OS/2 Warp. Cool!
OS/2 Warp has been around forever (or like 8 years) and IBM still supports it. They even came out with OS/2 Warp Server for eBusiness not too long ago.
It's too bad OS/2 didn't get more play in it's day. If an 8 year old OS can still hang tight in today's market of 'new OS every 18 months,' it must be an extremely well-designed OS in the first place.
Oh, so you're one of the assholes who doesn't upload. Way to be, fool.

No wonder you're a dark lord. Pretty evil, dude.
Which members of nsync and backsteet boys are going to be on it?
Maybe I'm missing your obvious sarcasm, but "A Brief History of Time" was a monster hit.

if Joe Sixpack LinuxLawnmower(tm) qualifies as a Top 1000 company.

I heard it was 802.11b. You can get pretty good point to point distances in the vacuum of space.

LORD the best BBS game? No way. It was alright, especially if you thought Jennie Garth was "HOTT". But those of us in the know preferred Usurper!

I didn't know "The Internet" was developed for "space exploration."
No wonder Google has to search so many pages. The universe is a big place. If only it would stop showing me all that geocities crap from Uranus.
I love Windows 2000 and Windows 2003.
Not everyone that comes to Slashdot has trouble complimenting Microsoft.

Unless the democrats can find someone better to throw up against Bush than Howard Dean, he'll more than likely be in for the long haul til 2009.
Next thing you know they'll be asking Gray Davis to run for President.
