Sorry guys I have to side with Microsoft on this one. I like my media player (i prefer to run this over programs like Power DVD which I installed and do not like its functionality), i hate .net and microsoft messenger (i use trillian). Maybe make all these features an option that by default is set to off and then someone would have to go to the advanced settings during the install? I wouldn't mind getting rid of some of the windows features that I do not use (and save hard drive space). However, I think the ruling stinks to high heaven of "lets make a statement." It would be nice to see microsoft pull their product "You want to buy it, buy it from the US." But we know that won't happen. -A

I pay a lot of money for my hard drive. So if Real Player wants to force itself into my hard drive, can I charge them rent? I think Microsoft should make their player a downloadable option just to get rid of the European nag. (as other have suggested) Better yet stop supporting the European market (that would be ideal) :) Real player was good a long time ago, then it got crappy. Even when I did have a registered version, the unregistered version would creep onto my computer and then annoy me with spyware, pop up ads, and trying to overbear my windows settings. If people want it, they will download it, if they don't know any better then why should we use their ignorance against them by forcing them to have a program they may never utilize!

Well they claim the technology is there, and they advertise that price. If they perfected the process, with mass automation it is possible to make it extremely cheap. Well according to those interviewed in the article (one of the people being a retired Navy Admiral who owns one of the two companies with this technology) deBears (sp?) has already implicated threats on his life. Obviously deBears would not be happy about him popping out perfect diamonds! I do not think the oil companies will go out of business anytime soon, they will still provide us with oil (it will take years to get oil based cars off the market) and all the other oil based products we use. Not to mention they will probably jack up their prices to match the difference. Gas prices would be at $10/gallon... Definitly one hand scratches the other. -A

The article was fairly long and detailed, but it did not go into the full technology aspect of the proposal (for a number of obvious reasons, one being that it wouldn't suit the article for Wired Magazine). If I recall correctly Intel already has the technology to utilize the new material. The only reason the technology has not been in use is because a perfect diamond wafer costs ten's of thousands of dollars and cannot be acquired in mass quantities. Considering that they can make these wafers into any shape desired, with a cost of less then $5.00, there is not much of an excuse on a technology side. On a business side Intel said they will not use it because the ROI for silicon has not been met yet. -A

  22. Intel is not impressing me these days on Windows XP 64-Bit Customer Preview Program · · Score: 4, Interesting

I still recall reading the article in Wired magazine a few months back. A company approached them with an offer to provide them perfect diamond wafers (produced at less then $5/wafer) and Intel did not take the offer because they have not gotten their full investment back on the silicon. So given that they refused to have an easy method of increasing their processor spead by a very big number, it is not surprising that they still haven't gotten 64 bit over AMD... Shame, Intel used to be the best. -A

  23. Dish TV vs Comcast on Cable TV Versus Satellite TV? · · Score: 1

I agree that comcast customer service is poor, and you had better watch their techs like a hawk and do a QA test on everything before they leave. However, barring having any technical problems I find cable TV far superior to dish tv. I have had both (I live in Philadelphia). Dish TV would go out on numerous occasions (bad weather or good weather) it would just go. Sometimes it would go out in one room, sometimes in both, sometimes for a few minutes and sometimes for days. When the service was brand new Dish network's first answer was to charge us (literally) and we didn't even have the service for a month. They will not install any wiring in your home (they will lay the cord in the middle of your hallway). I prefer comcast. I hate their service reps, but as long as i do not have to deal with their CSR's (generally i do not once the service is setup) it is a beautiful thing. The highspeed also beats DSL by far :) Hope that helps, Avi
