Microsoft starts the ball rolling by giving the computer company a shiny sticker with low requirements. Lets face it Joe average is going to buy a Vista computer expecting to see stunning graphics. The recommended specs are for Windows Vista Home Basic. It doesn't even have the fancy graphics. Better that Microsoft set the spec's to a version with fancy graphics. Otherwise Joe average is going to feel ripped off. Just what Microsoft needs, a bunch of pissed off people who just bought Vista. Anyone want to bet on the number of lost sales due to word of mouth after than happens?
Personally I think its entirely possible that Vista will be just as important as ME was. If that happens Microsoft could lose a lot.
C) we'll see machines that have Vista preloaded but which don't qualify as Vista capable?"
IMHO we will see a lot of them in stors like Buest Buy. It will be a good scam to sell and/or install the needed parts to make it work right. If this is done I see a jump the shark moment for Windows.
What is going to take for the open source community to fight back? To stop porting code to Windows? To stop releasing Firefox for Windows?
Porting applications is one of the smartest anti FUD things the FOSS community can do. It has lead a lot of people away from M$ control. Its addictive in some ways. You get to see just how high the software is in terms of quality. Firefox is a great ambassador, every time a bug is fixed fast while an IE exploit takes months gets some people thinking about that they should be using. Showing people is the best path, lead by example. I know I followed the ported application path to open source. First it was firefox, then open office, then away from Windowz and right to SuSE.
That is if they have access to the Internet. Mr average joe isnt going to think about that untill after they have installed Windows and things don't work like an ethernet card or modem.
They will have no support to call because the support is for a Linux system. The restore disks or driver disks that come with the system are going to be a Linux system image and Linux drivers.
True , a geek could do it. But a geek isnt going to buy a linux system then install Windoz. They will build a system from components and have the drivers disks from the components manufacturer if they want Windowz,
There are just to many holes in the average person buying from a chain store and wiping and replacing operating systems theory. Think about it, thats why Windows comes pre installed.
Poorly supported hardware? What Im talking about is the fact that a pre installed Windows comes with all the hardware drivers pre installed. Without them you are going to have fun getting the video card, the sound card , the modem, the ethernet to work right. Thats why when you buy new hardware it comes with a driver disk. Popping in a downloaded Windows disk, or a pre install from a different computer will not have the drivers.
How exactly are the people who would try this going to get the drivers? People think installing Windows is easy, it is if you have a restore disk, or all the driver disks as your building a computer. But buying a already built system and trying to install Windows on it without the drivers is going to be a task most average joe's will not be able to do. Especially if they dont have Internet access because Windows installed the wrong driver for the modem or ethernet card.
The staff believed, based on conversations with frequent customers, that most customers were buying the boxes to install Windows on them.
Have the people who think this ever tried to do a Windows install on a computer that didnt have it pre installed? If they think Linux is hard to install they have no idea the problems they will run into. Where are they going to get the drivers? That modem, sound card, and video card will most likely not work right if at all. How are they going to get the drivers with no internet access because the modem/ethernet card isnt working?
Are they going to try and use a reinstall disk? The ones that everyone loses within a year? Are they going to use a downloaded copy? The one that isnt going to pass the "genuine windows" check that lets you download updates?
All in all they must have asked a bunch of high school kids working for minimum wage with no idea what they were talking about.
Exactly how dose a Microsoft Windows user know the "problems" with Linux? Im sure the Get the fud out campain was the source. Firefox the cause of problems? Riiiggghhhhhttttt! and elephants fly!
The MPAA and RIAA haven't got a clue. They think that if they keep closing down the sites they will eventually win. The problem is that when they close down one big site a lot of little sites pop up to try and take their place. Suprnova was an example of this in some respects. After it closed a lot of other sites popped up to replace it.
If they succeed in shutting down one type of program. Another will program will replace it. If they get the trusted computing platform in place Linux will grow. Its kind of like a balloon. Squeeze it in one place and the other ends swell.
Iran will be next, god Im glad the election is comming. I can bet dollars to Donuts the Republicans will get booted out. We as americans dont have a liking for war, or the need to re elect the party that gets in one.
But Intel presented their case strongly, suggesting they can match AMD, if not beat them.
Im waiting to see an independent head to head comparison. That Intel can beat AMD using 2 computers they set up is not a shock. Its possible to do all sorts of low underhanded tricks to make one computer run better than another.
Wouldnt this world be boreing if you had to give up things you engoy just because of age? I am 42 and will never give up gaming. Why? Because I can aford it and I enjoy it. The same reason I have a computer and a ton of other toy's. Being interactive is a lot better than sitting in front of the TV like a lot of people my age.
The one thats signed by the creator , that cant be removed, deleted or changed without the fingerprint of the creator. All its going to take is a a hundred or so companies having to buy 50 or so new thinkpads because they cant remove the trusted virus to cause a real big stink and forever doom trusted computing
I fix copiers. The last time I fixed one of these they also broke the scanner. The person tried to say the glass caved in while they were copying a book. But the idiot left the copy of their rear end jammed in the machine. The damage wasn't under a maintaince contract as its considered abuse and misuse. It cost $1832.68 to repair. That was one costly rear end shot.
I can see how it might not matter with WoW because they already have the information like credit card numbers. But Warden has now been ported to Diablo 2 a 5 year old game. The eula for that game dosnt say one thing about warden when you install the program. Some of the people that still play Diablo 2 do so because thats all their computer can play. The specs for the game are real low like a pentium 233 and 64 megs of ram and dial up connection, and thats for the optimum settings. Since the patch that installed Warden there has been a ton of lag. Blizzard claims it has nothing to do with warden , but there wasnt as much lag before it was added to the game. Im all for stoping cheating. But this is going just a little to far when it is added to a game that is 5 years old.
Of all the stupid moves. Trusted Computing? Just wait untill that makes the rounds. Wonder how many buyers want to buy a trusted computer? My guess is not many. Unless they work for the RIAA and MPAA.
Who in thier right mind? After spending a premium for Apple hardware that comes with one of the better comercial os's. Is going to wipe it down to put Windows, The most malware-virus infested os, in its place? Maybe an escpee from a mental institution?
Apple wants to commit suicide and alow the Mac os to be run on generic pc's. So far what Iv read says that the Mac os will still only run on Mac's. Apple has no plans on releasing the os as software to run on any pc.
No, they won't. Entire countries are not just going to switch over, they have too much invested in MS products to make this even close to feasible. Consider that MS now controls upwards of 90% of the desktop market. People aren't going to wake up one day and think "Oh, in spite of all the money I've spent on MS software and all the time I've invested in learning how to use MS products, I think I'll switch to Linux because it's free and allows people who know how to modify the source code (I don't have the first clue LOL). Regardless of the fact that it will require me to learn an entire new way of doing things and probably greatly eliminate my productivity in the short run, it's worth it for me to switch to linux because of it's socialist model which I find unacceptable in other areas of business but completely support when it comes to software."
While there may not be a lot of countries doing it. There are some municipalities doing it. Think of them as test cases. As more and more see the benefits more and more will not believe the M$ fud.
When it comes to gaming and general desktop applications though, I fire up my WinXP box because, well, it just works.
Every year Linux becomes more of a finished product. Each little step brings it closer. I bet Linux will be good for those applications before a M$ operating system shows up with all the longhorn vaporware in it.
You have got to be kidding me. Honestly, I cannot believe someone would say something like this without any sort of evidence or support for their statement. You think MS's huge marketshare is just going to disappear? Excuse me, but what fantasy business world do you live in where that is even remotely plausible?
The one where the EU opens up the spec's and Microsofts extend and break idea goes up in smoke.
Looks guys, I'm not trying to be mean here, but I'm honestly sick and tired of misinformed people claiming Linux is going to take over and replace microsoft. It's just not going to happen. Linux is good for some things, and MS is good for others. They are not mutually exclusive. Live with it.
Maybe not take over, but id like to see it have a greated install base. Joe Stupid will always pick malware-virus infested garbage from M$ the misinformed always do.
Wait as we speak more and more work goes into Linux to make it desktop ready. It may not be ready today for everyone.
But then someone probably thought as you do 5 years ago working on thier Unix server and thinking Linux will never be a good server os.
Forcing your mail to go thru my mailserver when it originates on my network is within my rights as a network operator. Please feel free to sign up with another provider that doesn;t care if you spam. Of course, then you may not be able to send mail to anyone as you will be blacklisted, but at least you'll be free!
What you fail to see is that people who are paying for high speed buisness accounts because they have a network at the house pay your company. Without income your company goes out of buisness
Spamer? Get a grip. Not everyone with a email server is a spamer. I have a right to do as I please as long as I hurt no one, and PAY the bill each month.
I do not run an open relay. I do not send spam. I pay for the internet access. I should have the right to do whatever I want. That includes sending email using my domain. You know that bill I pay someone for each year?
While not a constitutional right the idea that freedoms given away to get a little security. Are still freedoms given away. You will be no safer because someone blocks my ports. You will have taken away options. The next time someone wants to block a port it will be easy.
Whats next, blocking everything but port 80? You dont need bit torrent, thats to steal copyrighted movies. You dont need port 1412, DC++ is for trading illegel copyrighted songs. You dont need port 6667, dont use Mirc chat with a browser interface.
Nice thing about compitition. There isnt just one broadband provider. Maybe if enough people paying for the 6mbps accounts change providers and give the reason "you are restricting me" it will change thier mind.
After all if I couldnt do as I please do you think Id pay for a premuim for a high speed account?
"Those people who would surrender some of their freedoms to obtain safety deserve neither freedom nor safety." Benjamin Franklin
When you give up any freedom it becomes easier to take more. There are some people like myself who like to have thier own email server. I hurt no one, I spam no one. I give email accounts to my friends sometimes. This is a sad idea. One that will only cost people in the long run.

Getting the rest of the europiean union to follow along with the french law. I dont think Apple will be able to just "leave" then.

A few patents. While sun swore not to do anything if someone implemented the standard. There was no free pass offered to people who want to modify it.
Keep posting as Anonymous Coward. I think it fits you.
