  1. Half-life 1 on Which Classic Games Have Aged Well? · · Score: 1

As another poster said, Half-life looks very good with more modern machines. And the FPS/quality ratio of that game is outstanding IMO.

In the "There should be a remake" section: Rock and roll racing (SNES). Anyone knows any remake? I liked this game a lot.

I would say a FF4 and/or FF6 remake, but I think Square is already working on a FF4 remake huh? (That's funny, I held shift a little too long, and the result was "FF$", which is not an unrealistic representation...)

If you really want to protect your backups from fire/natural disasters, I suggest that you go to your local bank and open a safety box. Record a CD-R, record a second copy in case your first fail, put that all in the safety box, along with anything else you would like to keep safe, and perform a CD rotations when your data change.

That's what I would do if I didn't have my parents to host my second backup copies in their house.

  10. 10% attrition? Change your brand, buddy. on Terabyte Storage Solutions? · · Score: 2, Interesting

10% attrition? In my case, I can't remember a CD-R I recorded that ever failed (I don't use CD-RW, maybe these are something else...). All my source backup are on CD-R, and I make quite a lot of them. I also burn a *lot* of music compilations for my car. Some of the CD-R there stopped working after (quite) a while, but it is only because a car is a harsh environment for a CD-R.

The CD-R brand must have something to do with it. I only use Sony's CD-R. Not for a particular reason. Only that none of them ever failed me.

Thus, my opinion is that CD-R are one of the bests (if not the best) solutions for non-industrial backups. By industrial, I mean freaking mission-critial multi-GB multi-millions dollars worth backups.

Note: I never tried DVD-R. You must code a *lot* of lines to make your projects' sources weight more than 700 mb. (Hum, quick cvs tree check: 75 mb... ok, I might be wrong here. However, these 75 mb were a *lot* of work for me...)

Personally, my technique to choose to buy a game or not is based on my past experience.

    Ubisoft = bad
Bioware = Technically good games, but quite mediocre storylines
squaresoft = Most of their products are outstanding.
origin = used to be one of the bests. (nostalgic *sigh*)

I wish there was a way (something like a central database) to track good game developers. Thus, if I really liked a game, I will seek for games from the same lead designer. It would be a better way to know which game I will like, because squaresoft *did* make some games I didn't like.

Goddammit, that's a good idea I got there. I wish I had some experience in crawler programming, I could do it relatively easily.

I played both UO and SWG (Koster follower). I know that a lot of people say that UO's graphics are awful (I'm talking about the 2D version here, not the 3D), but I still prefer them to SWG's graphics.

And here come the hypothetical examples. 3D Starcraft? Please don't! The graphics are cute enough as they are. 3D Civ? Would be awful!

A good test to make would be that everybody list their all-time favourite games, and see if they are 2D or 3D. How many FF4/6, chrono trigger, startcraft/warcraft would there be in that list? Of course we could use the recent Title Fight gamespot made, but the divisions were very badly made, because all the old games were in the same division, and UO was in the same division than all other ultimas...

This is the standard argument. However, depending on your playstyle, not 100% of the 40-60 hours you play are really entertainment. A *lot* of this time is pure grinding, and I personally don't call that "entertainment".

Even if you say that you enjoy grinding. Do you enjoy 1 hour of grinding as much as 1 hour of Lord of the rings? I doubt it.

On the other side, a movie is 2 hours of 100% entertainment (If you choose the right movie, of course).

My personal opinion on the MMORPG prices is that 15$ is ok, but I don't know if I would still pay the fees if it was 20$.

As a side note, I consider my 15$ for "The White Stripes - Elephant" a much better investment than my last 15$ invested in SWG.
