  1. Re:Cue subtle undertone of terror on Verisign to Purchase Network Solutions · · Score: 2

The problem is that Verisign (who recently paid a hefty sum for Thawte) now controls roughly 99% of certificate issuing. So, if you want to have an online commerce site, it will be just short of impossible to do it without involving Verisign to get a certificate issued. Something needs to be done about Verisign's monopoly on certificate issuing. I seriously do not trust one company controling 99% of anything security related.

If you don't have popular hardware, I guess you're just screwed if a company decides that your hardware-specific distro isn't popular enough to warrent a release.

Besides.. their mascot is a dork. And so is their PR Manager. "Free from ABIT, free from worry!" makes it sound like he's dumped his ABIT hardware, so he has no more worries.

Nope. If you spend any time on slashdot, you'll find that the linux using "me too"ers will use even the most minute point to trash MS. Even when there is no relation to MS at all in an article, they will come up with something. (ie. "I bet Aibo would piss on your shoe if it ran winbl0wz.") Even in the face of defeat, they just say "well, [free OS] will do x real soon now" and in the next paragraph, accuse MS of vaporware. My advice: pay no attention to it.

Of course piracy will continue to exist. People have pirated things since there has been people and software. The software and music companies know this. Even though they won't ever stop all piracy, they can stop some of it. They protective measures won't stop people that make their lives out of pirating things, but they will stop Joe User from getting around the procection. If they can make it difficult for someone to pirate their wares, then they increase the chance of selling their items. For instance, if I wanted some new cd, I'd probably look around for a day or 2 to see if I could find it in mp3 format somewhere. If I couldn't, I'd just go out and buy the cd.

The record companies try to prevent piracy for the same reason the police try to prevent crime: they know they can't wipe it all out, but they can keep it under some control.

Well, he's wrong then. :-) Finding a song you want is extremely easy and relatively painless, with programs like Napster and some of the better MP3 web searches.

Only if you're looking for the latest boy band song. Try finding some more obscure songs/albums and you'll have considerably less luck.

Instead, they'll destroy themselves in the process of trying to convince people that it's better to license music instead of buying it. What morons.

They have to go at it full steam. They missed the boat with digital music. Digital music sat around and grew for a couple of years before the recording industry took notice of it. They're trying so damn hard now because they realize they screwed up. If I were a record exec, I'd be running scared too. With more people on fast and cheap connections and 20+ gig hard drives common these days, music can fly around at will. And it will only get worse for them. They will never relenquish control of their intellectual propery. They'd be crazy to do that. They want to make it as hard as they possibly can to find that cd you're looking for so you'll go buy it. Can't blame them for chasing profit.

  11. Re:Heh, "Neat ASF movies"... on Streaming Media - Can Linux Keep Up? · · Score: 1

ASF isn't a compression codec. It's a "media delivery system" as MS calls it. Most of the ASF movies are compressed in MPEG4, the MPEG standard for streaming a/v. So, don't jump the gun and blame MS for the fact that someone didn't encode the video in a high enough bitrate. ASF could just as easily be used with MPEG 1 and have wonderful quality.

  12. Jon on The Myth Of The Tech Slump · · Score: 2

Katz really does suck. I'm not trolling or anything, just expressing my opinion. I can't believe slashdot still carries this guy. Hell, I can write a few paragraphs catering to slashdot demographic and be about as insightful as this trash. Every articles has the same basic points. 1. "The media" doesn't get it. 2. Politicians don't get it. 3. We're starting an information revolution which will bring about a utopia for all. 4. Packed with references to "geek culture." Throw in a few pseudo-philosophical questions and you have one genuine Katz article.

Back when slashdot had a poll on whether or not to keep Jon around, I voted yes because I thought he might branch out and express some original and different ideas. Well, I was wrong. How long did he drag out the Columbine ordeal? The first article was decent. Leave it at that. Jon has a tendency to beat an idea to death. Perhaps it's because he's not good at expressing other ideas, or maybe he simply doesn't have other idea, or whatever. The end result is pages of mindless already-done drivel and still more pages of the same slashbots replying with the same thing.

Surely slashdot, being the large tech news/community site that it is, could attract someone with more ties to the community he writes about and an ounce more creativity. Jon's writing skills are decent, but he needs to stick to other areas.

Schools should get that bandwidth because they need it more than you do. The applications of i2 REQUIRE that they have 1MB+/sec of bandwidth. Playing quake and downloading mp3s do not.

Solutions for the internet are being worked on. There is much money to be made by providing/selling bandwidth. With advances in fiber, bandwidth for the 'common man' is rapidly rising. With my cable modem, I routinely get 80K+/sec downloads. That's quite fine for me. However, 80K/s is laughable on i2. The internet 2 would not be possible if everyone and their mother was allowed on it.

Your tax dollars don't get you the bandwidth of i2, but they do help you indirectly. Getting information to students and doctors is a good thing. With more information and quicker access to that information, they can work faster/better. And because of that, you will get better and faster technology and medical procedures.

What does Joe Net really need with i2? Nothing. He just wants his mp3s and porn and AOL. The internet already provides him with everything he needs.

The same goes for slashdot geeks. Only a select few have any business having access to i2.

So, rather than waste moderation points that could well be used elsewhere, it would be better to just have them at the lowest score immediately and let the moderation system improve the scores of the interesting comments.

That way, there could be fewer moderators (fewer chances of abuse) and moderation could be concentrated on Rob's goal of concentrating on moderating good comments up rather than bad comments down.
