Even if Acrobat didn't let you get at the text by cutting-and-pasting, someone familiar with the PDF format could still get to it with some work.
Heck, Wordperfect X3 lets you open and edit PDF files like any other files. I hope we get something similar on Linux. Not necessarily having OpenOffice open and edit pdf files but at least something that turns PDFs into RTFs.
They could make money selling hard to find items, but not stuff that you can buy anywhere. There are a few things I can not buy locally that I would order if they had it, but I won't buy potato chips from them...
And I want them to sell me food I can buy locally by striking deals with local stores. I could shop online for what stores in my town sell and have it delivered in the next 24 hours. If they combine deliveries, it would cost less than FedEx. The grocery store gets a competitive advantage, Amazon gets its cut and the customer is happy.
In my town, stores complain about lack of shelf/floor space. If people bought from Amazon, the employees could take stuff right out of the warehouse which means less stuff you need place to display.
Hear hear. What I'd like is an extension that keeps extremely low profile. Until it sees a threat that is. When this happens, it display an appropriate warning that fills the screen. Something like "WARNING, YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE SCAMMED!". I would install it on my relatives PCs, it would give them a fighting chance.
I don't care what year it is released. I want it released on April 1st and include a pack of bubble gum in each box. That would confuse everybody on Slashdot;)
when you still have the dominant console in the world, and you dont plan to kill it off like MS is did to the xbox you want to devote some time to promoting it. the ps2 has ALOT of life left in it; depending on who you talk to, it may have more life than the ps3 will this fall. the bulk of their e3 conference was devoted to the ps3. in fact, many people criticized them for not spending more time on the ps2 and psp.
I'm glad the PS2 continues. I like my PS2. But what I was saying is that they were bragging for 20 minutes straight, not announcing anything.
"The next generation will not begin until [we] say it begins." microsoft said something to the same effect. i didnt hear any commentary about that one.
Really ? I didn't listen to Microsoft since they already released. But I think it's surprising since their console is already out. As far as they are concerned, the next-gen is here.
In a nutshell, Sony is conceding the next-gen console war and trying to take out the home computer.
They already did at E3. Try to find the video on Google Video. The first 20 minutes is endless chest beating and boasting how much the PS2 sold and a few stabs at Nintendo (we are not interested in gimmicks). The next 10 minutes is videos of gamers saying how they look forward to the PS3. There's even a girl who's looking forward to blu-ray.
Next five minutes is Gran Turismo HD on replay mode.
Seriously, when you barely talk about your new console but can't shut up about your old one, you are admitting defeat.
The most memorable quote in the whole video is : "The next generation will not begin until Wii say it begins."
Yeah, they meant "we" but it doesn't matter, it's a great quote:)
Why assume a constant price ? When the last episode will come out, if you played the two previous ones, how much do you think they can force you to shell out ?
You forgot a big one. Who is the moron who thought that moving around your menu bar (not the toolbar, the menu bar) was a feature ? When I walk past "average users" of Office, they almost all have the menu bar in a weird position because they moved it by mistake, have no idea how they did it and no idea how to put it back.
Virtual Console: Wii will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Virtual Console also will feature a "best of" selection from Sega Genesis titles and games from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.
Making S/NES games should be affordable to indies. I hope it will be sucessful.
You could google for them and see what comes up; I'm sure that the tech types that have had trouble with them have posted in forums and boards detailing their troubles!
I found that Googling for the company's name + a keyword works well. company + reviews can get some good results but the most useful search query I know is company + sucks.
Red book compliant CD players share the same algorithm to recover data from scratches and other damage. Many CD are sold pre-crippled in a way that the CD player will still play the intended sound by following its algorithm. The point is to make ripping harder (futile attempt).
Those CDs aren't red book compliant either and can't show the logo even if they don't contain malware.
Now, when I pickup a music CD my first thought after seeing if it is an artist that I like is: "Is this disc safe?"
There's an easy way to find out. Can you find the Compact Disc logo ? If so, it's not crippled. If I'm not mistaken, it's due to Phillips, the co-owner of the Compact Disc trademark refusing that their trademark appear on non-red book compliant discs.
I think most people that stick with ms software do this because they have no clue how to install alternative software (seriously - my family uses PCs for 14 years now and still they call me and ask me how to install this and that software) so make a "worm" that assists you in making your pc more secure (and shows you that you need it at the same time) maybe put in links to small, easy-to-understand "getting started" sites...
The Open CD can be an alternative to your scheme. Download, burn, give to your friends. All they have to do is put the CD in and they are greeted by a friendly screen that suggests open source software that can be install on the computer.
One of my friends, who has no interests in computers at all (other than as a tool), uses Firefox. Installed it himself. You would be surprised.
I'm fully aware of that. My point is that the trend would not have started if we didn't started it. If there wasn't geeks to initially push Firefox, there would not be more Firefox installs among non-geeks then installs of Bonzi Buddy.
That's what I meant by snowball. Now that it started, it's going to grow on its own. Same with that potential open source anti-spyware. If we show it to our friends and families they will eventually show it to their friends and families too.
I mean, with the demise of Netscape we got much BETTER browsers, in the way of Mozilla and Firefox and Camino. An MPL'd spyware scanner for windows? I dont think it will have that wide of appeal though...
No, it has a wide appeal as long as geeks suggest to their families what to install (or install the apps for them). You don't think Joe Average found Firefox by himself, don't you ?
Beside once the snowball is started, it can become really hard to stop.
So do I.
And am I the only one who slowed down on buying games because I'm waiting for the Wii ?
3.0 unfortunately. Firefox 2.0 will still use Gecko 1.8
And where is the fight between Office 97/2000/XP vs Office 2003 ?
You just gave me a great idea. When I'll make calls, I'll tell them that I am recording it. It should make them more friendly ;)
So Windows 98 user will only have a choice between Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox 2.0. Oh the horror !
Weird. I got mine when the price fell to $330CND and it's the same kind of switch you can find on the back of your PC for the power supply.
The PS2 have a real ON/OFF switch on its back. On the front, it's the standby mode. If you don't want it to consume any energy, flip the switch.

And what prevents you from unzipping the extension and looking inside ?
