Although I don't suspect this to be the case, some people just don't get the fact that they are vulnerable until you slap them in the face with something big. I recently tried to show a client two exploits-- the bigger one was that I could sniff all the usernames and logins into his payroll DB, and the other was that that I could crash the client app and bluescreen windows. He was more impressed by the flashy blue screen than the sniffed packets... probably because the BSoD was a lot "prettier" than the text output of my proof of concept program.

  15. Clever... on Buy Lindows, Get Fedora and Mandrake Too? · · Score: 3, Interesting

This seems like a pretty clever plan to get people to try their distro. They give the user the "comfort" of being able to thing "Oh, this is good... at least if I don't like Linspire I can try out the others... there's bound to be one distro I'll like," and even if that person does end up choosing one of the others, at least they made a profit.

Were I a newbie looking to try out Linux, I would probably test drive Mandrake or Fedore before giving Linspire a spin, so this seems like a clever way to profit off that tendency.

  16. Re:Great! on DSPAM v3.0 RC1 Spam Filter Released · · Score: 1

Excellent point. I really like the way my current provider is handling spam-- putting all the messages it thinks is spam in an IMAP folder, and then letting me file false positives and false negatives in special folders to help train the filters. However, the filtering model they're using now is really shabby, and doesn't even catch half of the spam I get. I'd love to see them keep the filing system and just replace whatever algorithm they're using to flag the spam.

  24. My University Requires Laptops. on Notebooks Replace Textbooks in Texas · · Score: 1

My freshman class was the first in this new program, and I was given an IBM Thinkpad 4 years ago. Since my sophomore year it has been sitting on a shelf, collecting dust.

The school started the program requiring that the laptops be utilized in some way in every course. The professors shrugged and said "they're probably typing their reports/compiling their homework on them" to get past the requirement.

In reality, no one was using the laptops in the classroom, except to chat on AIM and play videogames on the wireless network. It's much easier for most people to write out their notes on paper than it is to fiddle around with a word processor, especially when you're trying to draw graphs or write out formulas. The professors who tried using them in the class (mostly "type this code into your compiler and see what happens" demos) quickly went back to simple lecturing.

I've found reading anything on my laptop to be a PITA. The screen doesn't sit at eye level, so my neck was constantly bent downward to look at the screen. If I'm reading about Chemistry, for example, it's awful hard to flip back a couple pages to find the formula/proof I want, and then flip back to the chapter I'm on and find my place quickly. The teachers know this, so very few try to push electronic material on the students.

My point is... if college professors don't even utilize the required laptops properly during classtime, how many grade/high school teachers will end up doing the same thing, either because their students are getting terribly distracted, are being slowed down, or because it's just plain easier to do things the old-fashioned way?
